The Saturday 6 (Beauty Edition)

Since it’s a holiday weekend, I thought I’d get all crazy and mix up the Saturday 6 a little by sharing six beauty products I love and use almost every day.  I’m not a huge spender when it comes to making myself look better/younger/livelier/less tired/etc., but here are a few things that work for me and my budget.

#1exfoliating scrub

I’ve been using this exfoliating scrub, along with this milder cleanser, for a while now.  It smells good like grapefruit, and I’m a fan of the little scrubber that comes with the bottle.  (I also use this several times a week still when I feel like my face needs a good, deep cleaning.)

#2

gel eye liner

After being a pencil girl all my life, I switched to this gel eye liner last year, and I love it.  It’s surprisingly easy to apply (I just wear it across my top lid), and it stays on all day without fading.  I’m an official pencil-to-gel convert.

#3Benefit "They're Real!" mascara

I would consider this my one beauty splurge, but I promise it’s the best mascara I’ve tried.  I’ve been using it for about a year, and it makes my lashes look thicker than anything else.

I’m even including a creepy picture (I took) of my eyes to prove it:

 Self portraits are so awkward.

 #4

Sephora Age Defy eye cream

Speaking of my eyes, I was feeling like my dark circles were extra bad after the babies were born (obviously), so I went to Sephora to buy a good concealer.  The lady that helped me insisted that I buy this eye cream instead.  She said my problem was actually dryness under my eyes.  And, I think she was right.  I’ve been using only this and no under-eye concealer for months now.

#5

dry shampoo

You all know that hair washing is not on the top of my priority list these days.  So, I’ve jumped on the dry shampoo bandwagon.  I tried this pricier, powdery version first.  I liked it, but decided to try something less expensive the second time around and bought the TRESemme one.  It’s a spray version (which I like), and I think it works better on my fine, slightly dry hair.  But, I’ll warn you that it’s a little stinky when you first spray it.  Fortunately, the smell fades pretty quickly.

 #6

I have a hard time finding a lipstick that I really like and usually just wear gloss.  But, this one isn’t dry and the Cherry Tart shade is a great “every day red.”  It’s not too in your face, and doesn’t feel gooey (or maybe cakey would be the right word. . . ).  I’ve rarely bought the same lipstick more than once, but I’m on my third tube.

Hope you all have a great Memorial Day weekend!  See you back here on Tuesday.

My Latest Attempt at Painting

How to Paint Abstracts for the Non-Painter

Since I wanted to bring more blue into the girls’ room, I decided to take matters into my own hands and attempt some abstract art.  I had two of these ugly (to me) canvases in our attic (that I had always intended to paint over anyway) and started by spraying them white.

I grabbed the blue paint that I used on their little desk and a few other colors that I already had going on in the room.

The general method to my madness was this: dab some, dilute color with water and dab some more, mix in some white paint, followed by more dabbing, working my way down the canvas.   Is “dab” an artistic term?   I think it should be.

This is how it went:

Abstract art in the girls' bedroom

I showed my older kids when they got home from school, and they didn’t believe that I had painted them. I think I’ll take that as a huge compliment. . .

The Girls’ Bedroom: Adding Color

ikat headboard and pillow

Another update on the girls’ bedroom. I do a little here, lose interest, do a little there. . .  The headboard fabric (which I still love) started to feel like it was limiting me with what other things I could bring into the room.  So, I decided to throw another color into the mix by adding a new teal and white pillow to each of the girls’ beds.

I also found this tiny desk that fit perfectly between their bathroom and closet doors:

I painted it the same deep teal—Bimini Blue by Olympic (in a satin finish).

I found the paint-by-number at a thrift store, and have had the little white mirror in storage for a long time:

I’ve been wanting a dipped flower pot for a while, so I dipped—a pot—in paint.  I think I’ll skip the tutorial on that one :)

shared girls room

I still feel like the room needs some tweaking, but there’s just a lot of other projects swirling in my head right now.  I’m still thinking about a window treatment, and I’ve contemplated adding something to the bedding (patterned sheets? a duvet?).  But honestly, we probably have too many “bleachable moments” around here to not keep the bedding white.  So, this is where it stands for now. . .

Tomorrow, I’ll show you the little art project I attempted for their room.
