My 8-year-old had long been asking for a bulletin board for his room. I knew I wanted something big to fill the space above his desk but am trying to spend as little as possible since we may be playing musical rooms here soon and changing everybody around.
So, I referred back to the custom memo board that my friend Katie made for her kitchen when we redid her desk area.
I used the same insulating sheathing product (available at Lowes or Home Depot), and had them cut it at the store to my measurement—approximately $8 for the whole piece. (I did have to have a little help getting it into my van because of the size. I ended up coming home with two 4x4 sheets.)
I also used the canvas painter’s drop cloth to cover it. The only thing I did differently from Katie’s was to skip the adhesive spray and just pull it around, staple gunning it to the back, which worked fine.
I also took some stencils and painted all of the years that Kentucky has won the national (basketball) championship. Because he’s obsessed. And, I thought a big, plain board might be a little boring. (On a side note, it’s not looking like I’ll be painting 2013 there this year.)
It wasn’t the neatest job I’ve ever done, but I thought the messiness gave it an old stamped look. (Aren’t I imaginative?)
I have another piece of this sheathing left and am thinking of doing another board for our laundry room. You could definitely get creative with some tape and paint. . .

As for how to hang this big piece of canvas-covered sheathing. . . .take it from me, and do not use velcro on your painted walls. This seemed like a swell idea until the whole thing fell in the floor one night after leaving the ceiling fan on. And, you probably already know this, but pulling velcro off of your wall completely tears it up. Not good.
My husband came up with the idea of using monkey hooks. Have you used these? No hammering required. You just push them into the wall and twist.

The four corners of the “board” fit perfectly into the hooks:
And, I got one last shot before giving him free reign to start making it all his own :)
(Btw, I took this picture while the velcro was still on. But, trust me, use the monkey hooks.)

PS—If you have an urge to vote for a blog so that it *might* win an award, mine is nominated for the Apartment Therapy Homies in the best home design blog category. Just an idea . . . :)

So simple, yet so useful. Hopefully you can add 2013 to the list! GO CATS!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely adorable! Love the use of the drop cloth. And can we talk about those chairs? Where did you get those? Love them!
ReplyDeleteYes, we can :) They're from Pottery Barn but I got them at the outlet.
DeletePerfect message board for a little guy! If I may, wear did you get his desk chairs? I adore them!
ReplyDeletePB-- but they were at the outlet and I only paid a fraction of this: http://www.potterybarn.com/products/tolix-cafe-chair/?pkey=e%7Ctolix%2Bchair%7C1%7Cbest%7C0%7C1%7C24%7C%7C1&cm_src=PRODUCTSEARCH||NoFacet-_-NoFacet-_-NoMerchRules-_-

ReplyDeleteJust saw this on Pinterest! Perfect!!
ReplyDeleteno - this doesn't look like a winning year does it? Love the size and the way you personalized it for him.
ReplyDeleteIt turned out awesome! I like to say that the stencil bleed is my signature touch...that way no one questions me :) I've never heard of a monkey hook...just at the hardware store??
ReplyDeleteYes--just with the rest of the hanging stuff.
Deletelove this! i'm going to see if they do monkey hooks here in the UK. We rent, so do not want to leave massive holes in the wall!

Thanks, Catherine! :)
DeleteI like how he can display his favorite team yet keep it neat and tidy.
ReplyDeleteSo cute! My kids have pinboards in each of their rooms since there's no room left on the side of the fridge for their artwork. They love looking at all of their accomplishments!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! Love the years "stamped" on it - that is such a cool detail.
ReplyDeleteI mounted a big map onto this kind of insulation, and to hand, I hot-glued paper clips to the back, then hung them on nails on the wall. Easy peasy and still hanging many months later because that insulation board is so light!
Smart idea. Just curious, did you wrap the map around the edges? Do you have a link to it on your blog?
DeleteIn my opinion, your blog blows the top three winning blogs OUT OF THE WATER! Your blog is one of my top two design blogs! Crossing my fingers that others will "hop on over here and see!"
ReplyDeleteThank you, Melissa. That's very nice :)

Thank you for the suggestion on the Monkey Hook! I've been looking at using homasote to make a huge bulletin board, but I don't want to screw it into the wall, either since I am always moving things around. Thanks!
ReplyDeletewe use those hooks everytime we hang something! the were originally from the infomercial for "hercules hooks" and they are holding up our HUGE mirror over the mantel. super strong.
ReplyDeleteLove this Emily! May have to do something similar for my son's room! Super cool with the championship years and old net!
ReplyDeleteI use 3M Command Strips for everything now! No holes in walls, perfect for people who rent (or live in dorms) All our pictures are staying PUT! Never have seen the monkey hooks ....might try those now too! ~Kim
ReplyDeleteGreat idea and you know I love the UK tie-in, Emily! And you're right...no way a 2013 is gonna have to be added! Boo. Hope you're doing well!

Love this, Emily. Featuring as part of Eye Candy tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteLove the bulletin board and your smart personalization. I have to second the Command 3M and recommend the 3M Velcro adhesive. I used the 3M Velcro adhesive to hang a giant gallery wall and am in love! The pictures don't move, so it always looks neat and I could fudge the hanging a bit by being able to skooch the frames around on the velcro until I got them exactly where I wanted them. Does that make sense? I've never tried regular adhesive velcro but the 3M velcro rocks!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, I love this! Does the insulation hold tacks and pins securely?
ReplyDeleteYes, works great!
