This is How I Blog

blogging tips

Remember a couple of weeks ago when I asked five bloggers five questions?  Several of you said you wanted me to answer my own five questions.  I hope you were serious. . .   Here’s a little insight into my crazy blogging head.

question1

My mind is always racing with ideas for how I can make this blog a little better.  I do a lot of my thinking in the shower (one of the few places where I’m ever alone).  An idea for a post could come from anywhere—a pretty picture in a magazine, a question from a reader, something I want to do to our house.  If people only knew how often I have the thought “maybe I could blog about that", they might be alarmed. . .

question2

I’ll be honest.  The email that comes along with blogging totally overwhelms me sometimes.  I don’t mind questions, and try my best to answer them, but I occasionally have to go through my inbox and just delete those that are over a month old, and decide to be okay with that.  Sometimes, it’s all I can handle to just put regular posts up on my blog and take care of everything else I have to do around here.  I hope you all understand.  (I think you do.)

question3

I am more than grateful that blogging has become a job for me, and one that allows me to do 99% of my work from behind the computer, at home in a crusty t-shirt, with a very flexible schedule.  Beyond that, I love that I’ve made some great “online friends” (which sounds creepy, but really isn’t).  And, okay—seeing our home in BHG was pretty huge for me.

question4

I have to say, I dread Monday morning blogging.  A Monday morning post means Sunday night writing, which means coming out of weekend mode a little early.  Isn’t that silly?

(Oh, and a very full email inbox, which I already mentioned, sometimes gives me anxiety.)

These are big problems to have, right? :)

question5

Lately, I’ve been starting my posts late at night and finishing them in the morning after I drop the big kids at school.  The twins have recently turned mobile, which is making this slightly more difficult.  Sometimes, if I have a good (or funny) thought, I’ll quickly write a title and a few sentences during the day and save it to come back to and work on later.

There you have it.  More than you ever wanted to know about my blogging habits.

Happy Monday!

    1. I honestly don't miss it one bit. I thought I would but there's no way I could fit one more thing into my day right now. And, there's something to be said for just writing about pretty rooms instead of running around like a mad woman trying to create them :) Know what I mean?

  14. This was a great post Emily. I love the photos of your kids- they are all so precious. I've wondered how you juggle everything, and it's good to know you are so relate-able...THAT is what attracts me to your blog, plus your good taste!

  16. Great post and I love your home office! And the little ones are too precious! You rock at being able to keep up blogging and take care of 5 kids...total inspiration to me!

  17. My twins are a little older than yours, and just starting to crawl... it makes everything more difficult. We built a 'gated community' where all their toys are, and it keeps them in place while I get done what I need to do... but honestly, I usually end up playing in the gated community with them, while the dishes remain unwashed.

  18. Aw, the twins are so cute!!! I think everyone understands why you can't possibly respond to every email. Love your blog!

  19. I was wondering if you'd share your answers to the 5 questions! Thanks for doing that. One thing I love about reading your blog is how real and down-to-earth you are. I think it's incredible that you do what you do with 5 little ones.

  20. These are such great tips and insight into your blogging world! I have one little girl (and another coming soon), but I am seriously inspired by how you keep up! :)

  21. Still amazed at your ability to do it all. I have 3 kiddos and just started blogging for fun back in November. Im struggling with keeping up with my SAHM obligations along with all the blog stuff like photographing, writing the posts, linking up to parties and completing projects. I absolutely love cataloging out home's evolution though.

Thanks for the peek into your world.

  22. Just wanted to say "Oh my! The twins are getting so big!" Amazing how quickly children grow. And your big kids...they're growing so fast too.

    Great blog!

  25. Thank you so much for this insight. Your blog is so different from mine that the five questions would be answered QUITE differently for me. It is refreshing to hear your answers. For mine I must study and study and study in order to teach a lesson. Knowing how much time my blog requires for me (and I am an empty nester) I can not understand how you find the time with five children to accomplish the task you do. I just have one last comment, I just knew when I came upon that last pic of the twins that I was going to get an E-trade commercial! lol!!!!! Keep the posts coming. It is a bright spot in my day! Love you girl and I am never offended if you don't get around to answering my emails!

  30. Your kiddos are all so cute. I think it's wonderful that you share the reality of blogging (as a job) and mothering young kids at the same time. You are doing a fabulous job - I love visiting here and being inspired by your designs. Adorable baby pics are just the cherry on top!!
