Our Whatever Goes Christmas Tree

We got our live tree over the weekend. Such a big decision. . .

Our live tree is always a big free-for-all.  The kids grab ornaments left and right and there’s no rhyme or reason except to stuff as much as we can on it, including every paper and popsicle stick ornament ever made.  Somehow, I always love the way it turns out :)

We also added this to the tree this year:

Have you seen these?  Home Depot sent it to me when I participated in the Holiday Style Challenge.  It’s called “Mr. Christmas”, and you hook it into your Christmas tree lights.  It responds to voice commands and will play Christmas carols with a synchronized light show.  A little tacky to look at, yes, but my kids think it’s completely entertaining.

A word of warning, it might scare you to death in the middle of the night.  I was up late by myself turning off all of our lights one night and Mr. Christmas decided to start talking to me.  Not funny.

The chair that was in the corner of our family room ended up in the corner of the office temporarily.  I kind of like how it defines the room:

And, I’m completely enjoying the view from my desk.  I’ll miss it when it’s gone:

  1. Your kids did a great job decorating the tree! I love trees that kids help decorate, there are always sweet stories behind the homemade ornaments. And your office looks beautiful! I love the temporary location of the chair.

  8. I love a tree decorated by little hands. I remember when my boys would decorate the tree and the ornaments would always be in one corner on the bottom. One year my middle son hung an ornament one inch from the floor, he spent forever to make the decision on where to hang it.
I did a post on our tree, I call our tree a Memory tree, because it is full of wonderful memories from years gone by. I have an annual Christmas Cry every year. Someday you will too Emily!!
    MERRY CHRISTMAS,

  9. whatever goes trees are THE BEST!! we even do multi-colored lights (and bubble lights). My kids would go crazy over the singing ornament (right now they think they can blow the lights on and off because we have a remote). I love the chair in the office as well. Makes it more look a little more comfortable!

  10. Love the tree Emily! We don't have kids yet, but somehow we still have a kids tree with all of our ornaments that our mom's passed down to us! But don't worry...we also have a beautiful tree in our dining room that makes me smile:)

  13. Love the tree free for al. What good is it to have fun holiday decor if your kids can't join in or touch it? I always love what you come up with, and this year is no different. Thanks for keeping it real on your blog, I love reading it everyday, even if I can only find time to comment occasionally:)

  16. I miss having a real tree - I may go back to a real tree next year. I love free for all trees - so many special sentimental touches!

  17. Our main Christmas tree is always 'whatever goes' too - lots of colorful lights, sentimental ormaments (many home made), no real order and organization - but we love it, and it defines Christmas decor for us!

Your bookcases are lovely, and the large scale square painting in the hall is the perfect size and look. It makes me want to fill my blank walls with large scale art!

  21. My tree is always decorated with sentimental ornaments, too. I love seeing what the kids made and our ornaments from traveling. It makes it so much more special.

  22. Fab tree! I always choose the opposite route by keeping things spaced but I think I like the "more is more" look far better.

  23. Absolutely love both trees-- and your blog too! It's so refreshingly real and your ideas and style are amazing. How is your armless ikea chair holding up? We're actually debating one. Love how it looks in your office!

  25. Emily,
I was wondering where you purchased your large piece of art work hanging in the hall, which can be seen from the office. Is it original or a reproduction? Also, thank you for the tip on frames from the dollar store, I bought a bunch to hang children's art work in and they look great.
