Christmas Colors, Bit by Bit

We have been dealing with sickness in our house for over a week now, and it’s depressing.  So, in between laundry and taking care of people, I’ve tried to add a little Christmas cheer.

(You know what I love about reflective ornaments?  In photographs, they show what an utter disaster your house is, if you look closely. . . )

And, I was so tired that I forgot to cut the extra length off of the zip ties until after I took the pictures.

By the way, I used this set of ornaments.

Although I got  a head start on putting up one of our trees, I slowed way down after that.  I’m more of a bit-by-bit decorator when it comes to putting up our Christmas stuff.

What about you?  Do you take a little at a time, or knock it all out in one day?

  1. I am DEFINITELY a bit by bit decorator! That's probably why it takes me so long to do anything...whether it's decorating for a season or redecorating a room.

  2. Love the happy colors and the stripes are so fun! I'm definitely a bit by bit Christmas decorator. I only have a bit up now, and maybe I'll put a bit more up today!

  3. Im a bit by bit decorator, too. I have so much to pull out I try to savor each little area and take my time. ( which seems to be eluding me !) I love those striped bulbs amidst the others- they are whimsical! Happy Holidays!

  5. I love the red and blue together. Don't worry. It will take me until Christmas before I'm done with my decorations!

  8. Well, I prefer to knock it all out in one day, but now that we've moved into a bigger house I've realized that we don't have nearly enough decor to go around. I've had to buy some, and I'm trying to find time to make a little more.

I love the ornaments on the chandelier!

  9. I like to get it done and out of the way. I just may have to add the ornaments to my chandelier. I love it!

  10. From one "big by bit" decorator to another... I love the process!!! I bet you do to!! Beautiful and so full of festive color!

  11. Yes, bit by bit here as well. The approach saves energy and allows us to savour the moments rather than rush through them. For me, that approach inevitably means I do less which is a good thing.

  12. I'm the same way. It all goes up bit by bit. I think it makes it more fun.

  13. Those striped ornaments are too cute. I'm not bit by bit, but I tweak up until it all gets put away. Happy Holidays.

  14. First of all, I'm gonna spank you for being so critical of yourself.
You have five children, two babies!
I never noticed any of the reflections or zip ties until you mentioned them. I just saw the beautiful ornaments and wreath. Maybe I'm old and not seeing well, but if your viewers only notice those things, then boo on them! Your home is beautiful which is why I keep coming back. We're dealing with a layoff two weeks ago here at Christmas so seeing beautiful things makes my day!
    Merry Christmas

Hope you get good news about a job, soon!

  16. Love your colors! I'm doing the minimalist Christmas decor this year... living in a rent house, holding a newborn 'round the clock... that's all I got. :)

  17. Totally bit by bit. I don't go overboard but The tree is up with just lights and our wreaths have now bows-yet!

  18. loving the decor...even WITH the twist ties! I was an OUT OF THE gate decorator this year but then lost steam. Now i'm finishing bit by bit.

  19. Are you kidding, it takes me weeks. I start pretty early and the festivites culminate on Black Friday with decorating the largest of my four trees. It's all fun and games until it's time to take it all down.

  20. Absolutely hilarious. I haven't even started which means I'll get it all done bit by bit and then as soon as I'm done--enjoy it a day or two and take it down. Ha! I'm a little behind the curve right now. Hope your household starts feeling better!

  21. Ha! thanks for the tip to go back and look in the ornaments...nice pajama pants! ;) Those stripes are too cute. I pretty much do it all in one spurt, then do projects throughout the month. I can't handle having the boxes sit around!!! But this year, I only decorated the tree, mantle, door and a few things on table tops. Simple. Easy to clean up after! (seriously, how am I already thinking about the the clean up in January?!)

  22. I was just thinking that exact thing about reflective ornaments as I took holiday pics for my blog posts...funny! I am a "get it all done" the weekend and week following Thanksgiving...I want to enjoy it for the month of December before it goes down by New Years! Happy Holidays!!

  23. Adorable! I didn't know Home Depot sold ornaments! I love the striped ones!

  24. We've been sick too! I had such a bad attitude about it yesterday that I ended the day in tears feeling the "poor me" thing. I woke up this morning (err-- dragged myself off the couch after tending to a sick three year old, 7 month old and husband while being sick myself) and decided I was going to take advantage of the in the house time and made a small list of what I CAN do for the holidays while we all sick. I CAN make my Christmas card list, do the last little online Christmas shopping, and use all the on the couch time to cut circles out for a wreath I am making. It went so well I also was able to clean a little today! Its the little things. :) Hang in there. :)

  25. Sorry ya'll have been sick! That is no fun.

& I was thinking the same thing about the reflective bulbs during the Home Depot shoot. Only my problem was you could see in my polka dot pajama pants & my husbands sweats. I'm sure if you look close enough you could still find me in a few :) Who knew you had to actually dress up to take Christmas shots :)

  26. Love those ornaments! More holiday decor pics please :)

  27. Looks great! I always decorate my lights too and no we can't see your messy house. (It's prob not even messy). :)

  28. We usually knock it out in a day, but the last two years (including this year) we've had to do it piece by piece. I can't wait until it's all done. I love the tree lights at night when we're eating dinner and relaxing before bed.

  29. well, you know what? if you had not left aforementioned ziptie and brought attention to it, i would never have thought of that handy trick!

looks like a great start to me! we've got an azure blue, deep plumb and gold accents along with traditional red this year - just a tree and a mantel so far that we put together a few hours one evening. thinking of creating some type of wreath for the door. got any favorite snazzy (yet easy to assemble) DIY ideas??

    Hope everyone feels better soon!

  31. We have been sick here since the week of Thanksgiving. No big turkey dinner this year and I'm just starting to feel better. I hope to finish the Christmas tree tomorrow and get some more stuff out....ugh! I hope everyone is better at your home.

  32. I wish I was more of a 'bit by bit' Christmas decorator. But, unfortunately, I feel compelled to complete everything as soon as possible. I do find myself tweaking and rearranging somewhat for several days afterwards (which I seem to enjoy the most). Your breakfast room looks great!

  33. I love the idea of ornaments on the light fixtures. I try my best to get the house decorated in one day but that does not always happen.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Totally bit by bit. I know how it is to have to stop and change a diaper or breakup a fight,LOL!
    Hope y'all feel better.

  35. are you sure that ornament wasn't reflecting whats going on at my house? Major pit happening over here! and my Christmas boxes are still stacked up waiting to be unpacked. *sigh* .
Love all the colors your using this year! and they look perfect with the drapery!

  36. Sorry everyone has been sick! It seems to be the trend here in NC! I am totally a slow Christmas decorator. I like doing room by room, project by project. I drives the husband nuts! Boxes are everywhere for at least a week! :) Good luck!

  37. Zip ties. Aha! That's an awesome idea for hanging ornaments. See, there was a reason they were left on. To help the rest of who don't know how to hang ornaments from a chandelier:)

  38. I have been doing bit by bit here! Love the fun colors you added!

  39. I'm so glad to here you're a bit by bit Christmas decorator! I am too, and even today was like "Girl, you need to get with it. Surely everyone else gets it all done in like a day or two." So yeah...I'm totally a bit by bit kind of girl.
