Lists for My Lists

My to-do list seems a little overwhelming this week.  Does yours?

Even though we use an online family calendar, and I put reminders in my phone, I still feel the need to write it all down and make lists.  I guess it’s that gratification of marking through it once it’s done.

How do you stay organized?

Are you a list maker, or have you managed to go completely paper-free?

  1. Yep--I have several levels of to-do lists, and they do get overwhelming. By the time I finish one, there's another one or two started! I also use post-its for short-term to-dos, like to-do's for one evening. I've recently been trying NOT to make lists because they can get stressful, but then I realized that I don't have a good sense of what's on my plate and that's even more stressful! So, back to lists it is!

  2. I like to add already done things to my to do list and check them off..it makes me feel good. To do lists are a must for our busy family. Curious to know what kind of online calendar do you use? I am always looking for new ways to stay organized.

    1. I do that, too. Funny :)

We just use Google calendar so we can both access it and see what's going on.

  3. Oh...this post definitely strikes a cord with me! It make lists to organize my other lists!! To Do Lists...Dont Forget Lists...and thank goodness for the alert function on my i-phone. I usually set the 1 Day in Advance AND the 1 Hour in Advance alarms. Yet amazingly still seem to forget things! Could it be age?...let me check my list and get back to you! :)

  6. I sometimes add tings that weren't on my to-do list, but that I did that day, to my to-do list just so I can cross them off. :) Love a good list and the feeling of getting things done.

  7. Even though everyone encourages me to use my iphone to stay organized, I like traditional paper pen lists and agendas. I'm old school!

  8. I'm like you, I am holding on to paper. I use a "Daytimer" and keep all my notes, calls, etc. on it. I need a quick view monthly calendar in the kitchen or somewhere, but they look tacky, and since my kids are all grown I got rid of it. I'm looking for a designer-looking one to hang up!
Have a great day Emily. Hope your family is all well. You must show us progress pics of the twins!

  10. we do the same thing! my husband and i use google calendar and sync them to see each others events. and i still carry a small notepad with me wherever i go to jot down things i don't want to forget. i struggle with insomnia due to my over loaded brain, so at night before bed i empty my brain on to tomorrow's to do list. it seems to help some :)

  11. I need to make lists so I can have the satisfaction of crossing things off. Sometimes I even add something that I have just finished, just so I can cross it off

  12. My new thing is to use mini-sticky notes on action items, then peel them off and put them in my planner. It works great! Files and papers aren't lost or forgotten, and I can go back and see what I did in any given day.

  13. Nothing beats my spiral notebook. It's my go-to for my "to do" list, recipes, Weight watchers points tracker.. it's everything for my day and week.

  14. I use to rely on my memory but that's not working anymore. I have to write things down and keep them in plain sight otherwise out of sight out of mind. I'm definitely losing it.

  15. I cannot agree more. Without lists I get nothing done. If I go off purely my memory I would forget to pick up my grandsons from school sometimes lol

  16. I have every organizational tool known to man and sometimes I use all of them and sometimes I use none. I figure I'll keep trying until I get really good at being organized. BTW, I love your new headshot in your sidebar. The hair is dark and gorgeous!

  17. You have got to try Evernote ! And add on skitch. I take pics of home projects and document the dimensions so I always have with me. I am a visual person.

  18. I have been using the Things to Do list for months now and love it! I'm am a list person and having a cute list makes staying organized more enjoyable!

  19. I use Teux Deux - http://teuxdeux.com - and it has changed my life. It's super simple, easy to drag tasks from one day to the next, and you can even "cross out" tasks when they're finished (which I've found is just as satisfying as crossing them out on paper). They also have an iPhone app, so you're never without your list. I use it for both work and personal tasks and would never go back to paper.

    1. Thanks for the app tip, Jessica! I love crossing things out, but also don't go anywhere without my phone. Would be great to integrate everything.

  20. Emily, I love the new photo of you on the blog! So cute. :)

I also love your blog. I read it daily and love your 'favorite blogs' list where I spend way too much time.

These post-it notes are really quite beautiful.

  21. Ha! I just posted about this too. I'm a list girl. I have two calendar systems I use (one in my weekly list - a week-at-glance handwritten by moi, with weekly meal plan, and then weekly to-dos) and the big family calendar for big picture planning. My mind no longer works the way I want it to so I have to write things down.

  22. Oh yes, I'm a list maker. I write things down and keep good track of where the list is ;-) I never use a computer list/to-do program. If it goes down, where's the list, right? Best part of making a written list is crossing off chores. Sometimes we even keep the list awhile to see what we've accomplished. ;-)

  23. I am a list maker when I am envolved in a special project or preparing for a party. I do list and post-it notes. I think we all know what we have to do in our heads, but when it is something out of the ordinary, that is when I make a list. I am not a true list maker, because I don't get a lot of gratification to check it off. I did a post about this subject and I found that the TRUE list makers did a list so they could check it off! Mine is for a reminder!!!

  24. Listmaker all the way! I do put important things in my computer calendar but daily to do's on paper :)

  25. I think I have post it note love! I am such a note writer!

  26. I don't have lists for my lists but I will admit to having boxes for my boxes and baskets for baskets. ;)

I use a giant dry erase board. It is easy to change to my fast paced and ever changing schedule.

  27. I have lots of lists. I'm a room mom to two kids, help out in in my third son's class, work part-time, have a blog, pay the bills, etc. I put the most important in my reminders app on my phone. I have a written list in my office in my planner. I also put up the most important reminders on a corkboard in the offce. I have a "when I have time" list on my computer of things I'd like to do around the house. Somehow, I never get to that list. Wonder why? ;)

  28. I have lists and post it notes everywhere!!

  29. So great to know I'm not the only one with too many lists! I tried keeping my lists on my iPad but missed the feeling of accomplishment I got when crossing out an item on my paper list : ) Now I keep the really important or "down the road" things on my iPad and my daily to do's on paper!

  30. I adore seeing your handwriting! Pretty!

  31. I'm a list maker, but I prefer a spiral notebook because I can go back to make sure I've done something (or called someone) when I'm having one of those crazy days where I can't even remember what I did the day before.

    ReplyDelete
  32. And then, I get nostalgic about my lists! I still have my "to do" lists from getting ready for babies, planning vacations, events, etc. I have issues!

  33. I'm a real list maker, even though most of the actions on the list never get done ;-) I need to keep them on paper. I've noticed that paper lists are more hands-on than digital lists. For me, paper is a product that will never entirely disappear as I just seem unable to do anything with digital to do lists.
