Today, I’m putting a second coat of white paint on our kitchen walls.
I used to think that I would never have a white wall in my house, but now I wouldn’t mind painting every room the same color. Even though we’ve only painted one blotchy coat, I can’t believe how much it already opens up the room.
It’s a pretty big change from what was already there:
Ignore the mess. This is life.
I actually liked the old wall color but it didn’t work with the curtains I just had made. (By the way, I’ll try to rummage through my garage today and see if I can find the name of the old color; I always get questions.) This is what we’re hanging around the windows behind the table:
And, that’s my Monday. How’s yours?

Lovely! I have been itching to paint our pale yellow walls something lighter, closer to white or cream. I have always loved pale paint colors.
ReplyDeleteLooking great! I agree about white walls! Love the fabric too.
ReplyDeleteI have white walls in our kitchen with very similar cabinet color. Love it! When we bought the house the kitchen walls were what I lovingly refer to as "baby poop green". I couldn't wait to go white. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI'm super excited to see your kitchen transformation! Especially with your drapes.
It looks great. I can't wait to see those curtains hung. They're going to look so pretty!
ReplyDeleteWish I had a house to work on right now! I can't wait to move into our new one (with all white walls btw:)!
ReplyDeleteLove white walls and love that those curtains! Can't wait to see it.
It looks so great! It's always fun to make a change- especially when it's drastic like this! It's going to feel so fresh and light when you're done! Too funny, I just made a big change to my kitchen and blogged about it today too :)
ReplyDeleteCheck it out!

I have been wanting to paint all my walls white also. Love the fabric you made your curtains out of. Cant wait to see the room when it is done.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the finished result! Last year we painted our house all one color and love it! I have a friend who built a multimillion dollar home and her walls ans trim were all BM Manchester Tan. When I walked it was so calming and i realized that it really was a nice backdrop to all of her beautiful furnishings and fabrics so I did the natural thing and copied! Her home was featured in Fort Worth Magazine last March...beautiful.
ReplyDeleteLove the fabric! I love that you have taken a risk with white in a couple of rooms now. Interesting. I like it. How fun! I've been painting too - taking on the whole house - all of those inter-connected walls.
ReplyDeleteIt really is amazing what a coat of white can do. I used to be a skeptic - always wanting some colour . We just finished our kitchen reno and pretty much the whole thing is white. My husband was skeptical about painting the walls white when the cabinetry was white but I knew it was the way to go. White really opens things up and we love the result. Come check it out on my blog, if you like!

LOVE the pattern for your curtains. I think too many people underestimate white walls, can't wait to see it finished!!
ReplyDeleteI was the same way coming out of college...I would never have white walls again. Now, though, I'd love every wall white with espresso hardwood floors. LOVE!
ReplyDeleteIt's going to be fresh and gorgeous. Excited to see the reveal!
ReplyDeleteemily - it REALLY has brightened it. what a difference!
ReplyDeleteLove the pattern and color on the fabric for your curtains -- can't wait to see pictures!
ReplyDeleteI think white can really be a showstopper if done right, as you have here. I would never paint an entire house white but even just one wall in a room with windows can make a huge impact. Love it! Enjoy the new paint smell :)

ReplyDeleteI would have white everywhere, i love it.
ReplyDeleteThat's going to be STUNNING with those curtains. I love a clean, white kitchen. The windows in your kitchen are fab. as well. Can't wait to see the end result! I used to hate white also but am starting to love it with dark wood molding! :)

All about white walls and can't wait to see the end transformation. But how awesome is your little TV cabinet?! I just love that.
ReplyDeleteI used to feel the same way about white. When I moved into my house four years ago, anything that was white got a coat of paint (including the ceilings). Now I'm suddenly in love with all things white. I think your kitchen is gonna look great painted white. I can't wait to see the finished product!
ReplyDeleteOh, it looks so nice with your wood cabinets! I have an office full of stained wood that I decided to keep rather than painting. About a month ago I went white with the walls like you are. I really like the contrast! Can't wait to see it all put together!
ReplyDeletelast year i had a desire to go lighter... at one point we had about 20 white samples on the wall (grey white/greenish white/blue white etc). the original color was grasslands (sw) and we ended up with chatroom which is even darker than grasslands. it looks great but i will at some point have a white house.
ReplyDeleteI love the fabric against the white walls! It looks so fresh and crisp!
ReplyDeleteI am hoping to finish up the grandchildren's bedroom that we have been working on for a few weeks now. I found a lovely painted children's chair at a consignment store in Charleston over the weekend. We have just a few finishing touches to go and it will be all ready for the grands to visit! If you are in Charleston be SURE to go to Consign Charleston while you are there! Huge, awesome store and fantastic prices.
ReplyDeleteI recently painted two rooms white ...need to do that reveal blog post...but WOW.. I love the freshness it brought to the space. just like your kitchen!
ReplyDeletewhite is right!!!
Ummmm, aren't you a mother of 5 children? How in the world do you have time to paint a kitchen? You are seriously a wonder woman!! Looking forward to seeing the full reveal.
ReplyDeleteWe're painting too...shades of white :-) I love white rooms. Can't wait to see your 'after' look!
ReplyDeleteOh those little twins are growing so fast! My great niece was born about the same time as your babies. Fun to see them all growing up :-)
LOVE the yellow curtains! I'm feeling a bit desperate to get some yellow into my house, not sure if I want a bright, sunny shade or more mustard. But I'm excited to see your curtains hung so I can get even more inspired!
ReplyDeleteWhat color white did you use?
ReplyDeleteLove the white walls with the cabinet color and the new curtain fabric -- wondering what that fabric is by the way. Beautiful! How do you find the time to do all this? You're inspiring! :-)
ReplyDeleteI am in the midst of painting our family room, eating area and kitchen white. I am loving white walls, and think I may do the whole house white too. Can't wait to see yours when it's all done.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! White is so fresh and clean. We replaced a stainless fridge with a white one and I love it!! I don't know if I could do white walls I love color, but I think it looks great. Love the curtain fabric sooo much! What is it?
ReplyDeleteI hear you about the white. It was 7 years ago when I painted my kitchen and den white...now the whole house is white and I never have to think about it....like where you are going in that there kitchen gurl....
ReplyDeleteLove the pretty pattern on your new drapes!! More and more I am loving fresh white walls. (maybe it's because the house we're renting feels like a cave and I'm craving a brighter feel!) Can't wait to see your pretty kitchen and eating area when it's done! I love your new house!
ReplyDeleteI am with you. After painting everything a color over the past ten years, I'm ready for shades of white. We're moving in two weeks, and I can't wait to paint.
ReplyDeleteFunny...I have been admiring white walls again lately. I love the how they offer such a simple backdrop and let the details like those new curtains shine! Its gonna look fabulous...cant wait to see the after pics.
ReplyDeleteI think having kids has made me crave white or creamy tones. The simpler the better! My living room is SW Kilim Beige which is lovely, but in my room it's cave like.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the finished product. I love the fabric for your curtains.
Got a house full of half-painted white walls myself :) I am loving the change too...I feel like I can breathe deeper!
ReplyDeleteEmily, I love how the white brightens your kitchen esp. with the wall of windows! Lucky duck! But even more impressive is how do you find the time to paint with twin infants on your hands???
ReplyDeleteFor those who asked, the new color is Shoji White (Sherwin Williams)--same color we used in the master bedroom.
ReplyDeletefantastic - our whole house is khaki and i thought i would hate it but everything goes with it and it makes the house flow easier (and mike says no everytime i want to paint) love the new curtains!!
ReplyDeletelove it!! white is so refreshing and I too have been tempted to pull out the white paint on my walls. LOVE the drapery too!
ReplyDeleteI always say:
ReplyDelete"white IS a color!"
and what mess is there to excuse? everything looks neat as a pin to me!
Ahhhhh, white is simplicity. I have four kids and white definitely appeals in a non-cluttery way! I can't wait to see more of your kitchen. Thanks for sharing the process.
ReplyDeleteok, so my question is this.....i LOVE white, but am mom to 5 children. walls are always getting touched, bumped and banged into.....any input on how the white wears in real life??? I used a mid tone grey in my last house and it hid a multitude of sins,.....my new house is builder beige FLAT paint (ugh!) which shows everything!

ReplyDeleteOooo... those curtains are going to look awesome! I'm the same as you... Almost our whole house is now white or light grey... it just makes it feel so bright and airy. And the spaces that aren't are on their way to be painted (someday..)
ReplyDeleteEmily- I love your kitchen windows and chandelier! I painted every wall in my basement white (White Dove to be exact) and I love it. It brightens everything up and feels clean! :)
ReplyDeleteI just painted my daughters room shoji white and also love it. Thinking about continuing it down the hallway. (but one thing at a time, must finish all my other plans for daughters room). Thanks for sharing. And I know how u fit it in w 5 kids, we have to find time to do things we love to rejuvenate ourselves. Can't wait to see the "after".
ReplyDeleteYay for white walls! That's all I have to say. Other than, I can't wait to see how the dining area turns out!
ReplyDeleteCamille
I agree with the white wall. Fabric chose is fabulous as always!
ReplyDeleteCan’t wait to see it. I have your cabinet colors and would like white walls too. Those drapes are gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteAnd, really, how GREAT do pops of color look against all white walls! I am in the mood to paint my entire house white inside right now... just might! :)
ReplyDeleteI used to hate the idea of white walls. But then I realized how I love so many of the European rooms in the old buildings with all-white walls. They look so fresh, yet storied. We have such gorgeous white-painted Craftsman molding that I wouldn't want to paint our walls white here, because the molding would just blend in. But since we get hardly any natural light, maybe lightening up our walls from a beige-gray to a lighter gray would help.
