Freshening Up Our Front Door

With a new season comes quick changes for our front door.  This is what I like to call the poor man’s customized door mat:

I picked up a $5 mat at Big Lots and painted on our house number using stencils and paint I already had:

(The pineapple finials were one of my best yard sale finds--$2 each.)

Instead of killing mums this year, I opted to put these in our planters:

What changes have you made to your front door or porch for fall?

  1. Hi Emily,

Just love your new mat and the comment on not killing mums (I'm with you there). And your smoochie little green anole - my son would love to come over and bring him home. They really make great pets.

We just moved our dining room table to the front porch for a new fall dining room. It's a work in progress but we love it.

  2. The lizard is the uninvited guest. Your front porch is super cute. Love the pineapples. Stencilling the mat is genius. My front porch has not moved from the dream stage to the reality stage. I am thinking of a fall wreath with nature finds, fake pumpkins, lanterns with candles inside of them and a stool/bench/chair of weathered wood with an urn covered by moss planted with mums. Thanks for inspiring me to put my thoughts into action.

  4. We need a new door mat. i love the one we have however we just moved and because of how our front door is situated and there in no "step up", the door doesn't fit over the mat when it swings open.Right now it's placed way in front of the door and looks a little silly. Love your idea!

  5. Love the house number on the rug! I may need to follow you and buy some of those same plants - I've killed mums every year - but I do love that burnt orange color - so we'll see.

  12. What a fabulous find - those pineapples! When I lived in the south we had tons of newts around the house. They would hang out on top of the front door, and when I opened the door they would fall on my head. Ack!

  14. Cute! Love the plant you chose...hypericum berries look awesome in flower arrangements or on their own in a vase and last a long time too!

  18. Very nice, just found you a few weeks ago. I moved into my "new" house last month. I need your ideas! One of my kids was telling me that if you go by a house and you see lots of pineapples it means they are "swingers". What? How do they know or do they know what a swinger is? I told them pineapples are are a friendly "welcome" symbol. My porch/front door? I planted 6 bargain priced pansys this morning, and pruned my dying mums...

  19. @Cindy--Swingers?! Ha! And, I always thought they meant "welcome", too. Tell your kids there's no swinging going on over here :)

  20. I just looked at my front door today in disgust. So I got the broom out and swept all the cobwebs away...now I need to replace the dead plants. It's always something....I am liking your pots. May just copy....#lazy!

  21. I just love your blog. Even though your posts are short and not to wordy, they are always full of beautiful things and ideas to look at. Yours is one of the best I've found. Keep up the good work. Your front door looks just beautiful!

  22. What a great idea! Love it! We have one of those little guys too. My windows have dog "boogies" all over them from where they watch the lizards.

  23. Going for the mums this year, wish me luck!

  24. Hypericum berries. In the floral world, we use these a lot in fall arrangements. Ranging from green to oink to brown, they last a good long time as cut "flowers".

  25. Such a great idea! Cute little addition :)

  26. I just moved into my new house in June, and my street name is Hypericum (which no one can ever pronounce, btw!). I'm going to have to get some of these to plant. Yay! Thanks for the idea!

  28. Where did you get your house numbers all together like that? Looks great and I bought a pair of acorn finials that I can barely pick up that I am now painting black. I love that. Looks great. I'm also going to get a new mat:).

  29. @Keggy, The stencils aren't connected--they just look like that in the picture. It was just a pack I picked up at Lowe's.

(Btw, I just read your hair story. It sounds like a movie :) Please leave another comment w/ your email address if you get a chance. I couldn't find a way to respond to you.)

  30. We recently replaced the antique door for our porch. We didn’t want to replace it, but it was its time to go. We installed a mahogany hard wood to keep the feel of the old one though. It is important to re-coat the doors with paint every few years, so that it would still be protected from the wear and tear of time and nature.

  31. The front door of a house assumes tremendous significance as it reflects the tastes and preferences of those dwelling within the house. While building your home, it would be nice to pay attention to the look and appeal factor of your front door.
