Chevron wasn’t part of my everyday vocabulary. I thought zigzag was just plain old zigzag.
I decorated my bookshelves. Now, it’s only appropriate to “style” them.
I never felt pressure to produce a “fall mantel” in August (or any other month).
I didn’t know what Ikat was or how to pronounce it.
I would’ve never dreamed of wanting a pillow with (part of) a dragon on it.
I never thought so much about whether it’s spelled sneak “peek” or sneak “peak.”
What do you do or say differently since discovering the world of design blogs?

ReplyDeleteOh the mantel pressure... for sure. I felt I didn't have to participate because I didn't have one, but I just purchased a vintage surround. WE'll see how long I can last without re"styling" it.
ReplyDeleteI just hung pictures, now I create a gallery wall of artwork! And, I before I added a little color, now I use elements to 'give a pop, punch or fresh dose' of color! Too funny, Emily!
ReplyDeleteI definitely have a whole new vocabulary. I use words like vignette, or space instead of room and repurpose instead of move or redo. Sometimes my non design blog reading friends look at my funny like, 'what are you talking about?' However, I do think blog reading has really helped me find my own style, where before I felt more limited to what was in the magazine from the local grocery store. I was kind of amazed as I started finding different blog how much I had no idea what I really liked before. I regreted a lot of my previous choices in decor, made only based on what was available in front of me or what the girl down the street did.

DeleteI. Love. This. Post! cracked me up - the sneak peek/peak....i've had to stop and think about that one several times. Anyhow, design blogs have definitely broadened my scope, but sometimes I have to make sure that I'm doing what I'm doing because I really want to or am I just sucked into something because I've seen it everywhere.

This is classic. I never would have known what ombre is nor would I have known chevron was something other than a gas station around here. Oh, and pin it, tweet it, post it, and blog it {cha cha cha} never would have crossed my lips!

I love to zhoosh, style, vignette, space plan and create a look. ....and I now have an eclectic, chinoiserie, modern, classic style.....with my up cycled, re purposed, painted, DIY furniture.

ReplyDeleteBefore I read design blogs I didn't know very much at all (still don't)! I just looked at pictures of our apartment when we moved in and how it is now, and I have to say that while it's probably not blog worthy, it looks a lot better than it did!

ReplyDeleteBefore blogs, I used to read magazines. I don't subscribe anymore because blogs have many more ideas and projects. I still like to buy a magazine sometimes for a road trip though.

You're peak vs peek really made me laugh because I re-read a post the other day and realized that I misspelled it! I don't know why I keep doing that, but it's one of the toughest things to keep straight for me!

Reading design blogs has taught me that an object cannot just sit on a table, but rather, it must be cloched.

I am convinced Millions of French people turn in their graves each time this beautiful word is abused and misused.

My clients actually think I'm crazy when I present ideas that are brand new b/c they aren't mainstream enough to be considered...white appliances, brass and gold accents.
