Before I Read Design Blogs. . .

Chevron wasn’t part of my everyday vocabulary.  I thought zigzag was just plain old zigzag.

I decorated my bookshelves.  Now, it’s only appropriate to “style” them.

I never felt pressure to produce a “fall mantel” in August (or any other month).

I didn’t know what Ikat was or how to pronounce it.

I would’ve never dreamed of wanting a pillow with (part of) a dragon on it.

I never thought so much about whether it’s spelled sneak “peek” or sneak “peak.”

What do you do or say differently since discovering the world of design blogs?

  1. This is so fitting-I just "styled" one of our bookshelves this morning and was thinking the same thing:) Have a great weekend!

  2. Ha ha! I love this post! I do find blogs to be a bit ahead of the magazines with respect to new trends.

  3. Oh the mantel pressure... for sure. I felt I didn't have to participate because I didn't have one, but I just purchased a vintage surround. WE'll see how long I can last without re"styling" it.

  4. I just hung pictures, now I create a gallery wall of artwork! And, I before I added a little color, now I use elements to 'give a pop, punch or fresh dose' of color! Too funny, Emily!

  5. I definitely have a whole new vocabulary. I use words like vignette, or space instead of room and repurpose instead of move or redo. Sometimes my non design blog reading friends look at my funny like, 'what are you talking about?' However, I do think blog reading has really helped me find my own style, where before I felt more limited to what was in the magazine from the local grocery store. I was kind of amazed as I started finding different blog how much I had no idea what I really liked before. I regreted a lot of my previous choices in decor, made only based on what was available in front of me or what the girl down the street did.

    1. Amen! I am exactly like you! Had no idea what my "style" was until blogs :-)

  6. I. Love. This. Post! cracked me up - the sneak peek/peak....i've had to stop and think about that one several times. Anyhow, design blogs have definitely broadened my scope, but sometimes I have to make sure that I'm doing what I'm doing because I really want to or am I just sucked into something because I've seen it everywhere.

  7. I never knew what "deets" were. :) I think you perfectly summed up the world of design blogs for all of us!

    ReplyDelete
  8. OMG, you are cracking me up! Um, all of the above that you just said! I think for me, my "yard" has become my "property" sounds a whole heck of a lot fancier huh? :) melaine

  9. oh yes, my favorite is "vignette"!!! Before I would have called that "a pile of knick knacks" lol
I still don't "do" vignettes in my home, but at least I know the proper term for that now. ;)

  10. This is classic. I never would have known what ombre is nor would I have known chevron was something other than a gas station around here. Oh, and pin it, tweet it, post it, and blog it {cha cha cha} never would have crossed my lips!

  11. YOu are too funny!!! I didn't know what a url was or how to post on a blog! Mine was all blog related! I thought I had my act together until I realized how many people were way ahead of me!!! U for one!

  12. Hilarious....before blogging I could decorate my own house....after....feet stuck in cinder blocks.....frozen....before....lots of time....laundry done and better shape......after much better pictures!

  13. Gradiated anything - from washcloths to dresser drawers!

  14. Awesome! Oh - how the world of design has opened up! We were in the 'dark' before.....now we know better. If only I could pronounce "chinoiserie"!

    ReplyDelete
  15. This is so funny. Yes, I "decorated" bookshelves and didn't style them and I showed my clients' their room, not "revealed" them. I still hesitate before saying "eekat" ...lovely photos!

  16. So true -- I'm working on a fall mantel now, and wondering what in the heck I'm doing?! so, how do you pronounce ikat? I always said, eye-cat...but I've heard others say ee-cot. How's it sound in NC? :)

  17. I love this post it's so funny. Yes I have learnt a lot, especially the difference in terms between countries. I love to zhoosh, style, vignette, space plan and create a look. ....and I now have an eclectic, chinoiserie, modern, classic style.....with my up cycled, re purposed, painted, DIY furniture.

  18. Great post. Blogs really have changed the way that we live and think.

  19. ...I thought I was the only one obsessed with decor mags, design details & styled spaces. Glad to know I'm one of many. Great post!

  20. Saying things like "pop of color" and "every room needs a touch of black" while shopping for home decor!
    Love your blog!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Ha ha! I can completely relate. I just blogged about chevron, ikat and fall decorating today. When I mention any of this to my friends and family they just look confused. It must be blog influence!

    ReplyDelete
  22. So true. I can't shop without seeing things other bloggers would like.

    ReplyDelete
  23. ha ha! I love this Emilly! I too now find myself decorating my mantel for every season - and blogging about it of course :) This is so funny. I agree with all of them :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. This is funny. I always think about the word "room" versus "space."

    ReplyDelete
  25. I thought Chevron was just a gas station! :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Now that was funny and painfully true! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I have to watch Breaking Bad just to give my brain a break. Love this :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Before I read design blogs I didn't know very much at all (still don't)! I just looked at pictures of our apartment when we moved in and how it is now, and I have to say that while it's probably not blog worthy, it looks a lot better than it did!

    ReplyDelete
  29. milk glass. I would've called them 'white knicknacks.'. =)

  30. Ha - I think my vocabulary expansion has been hardest on my husband! Vintage, distressed, patina, asymmetrical, painted furniture, embracing imperfection, gallery, repurposed bookends-formerly-known-as-industrial-pulleys, focal point, coordinating patterns but not matched...

    ReplyDelete
  31. I've started using the words ” on trend” !

    ReplyDelete
  32. Before blogs, I used to read magazines. I don't subscribe anymore because blogs have many more ideas and projects. I still like to buy a magazine sometimes for a road trip though.

    ReplyDelete
  33. cute post! I did a post a while back on the language of blogging, which is different from our everyday talk; such fun things as "drool worthy", the reveal, chinoiserie, and the list goes on. I love our language that pulls us bloggers and designers together.
    Have a great weekend.

  34. Instead of organizing and cleaning out, now we need to "curate!"

    ReplyDelete
  35. Before Blogging...or just BB for short I knew nothing about HTML which I still call "hotmail" and had certainly never heard of a "link party"!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Sign me up for upcycling, link party, anything "et cie," gallery wall, and probably a lot of other things I've convinced myself I always knew!

    ReplyDelete
  37. vignettes and vessels were new to me until blogging.

  38. Can you please tell me where I can find pillows like the one in the last picture of this post? I love that pillow!

  40. All I know is I immediately googled how to pronounce ikat. Totally been saying it wrong, LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Love this post - so funny and true :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hahaha! I LIKE you, Emily. ;-) For what it's worth, I have problems with Ikat too!! But I daresay "peak" is a mountain, so not sure I want to sneak anything in on that one!!! LOL Hx

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh so true Emily! I was lost about color before reading blogs and my world was very beige (and not in a good way!)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Pardon me but LMAO! So true. I can tell you that I love how blogging has opened my eyes to things that I might not have seen possible. It has been a sensory overload in all the right ways, and I think the coolest thing ever! Also, it catipulted my career forward. I "heart" blogs and blogging. Fantastic post!

    XOXO,
    Whitney

  47. You're peak vs peek really made me laugh because I re-read a post the other day and realized that I misspelled it! I don't know why I keep doing that, but it's one of the toughest things to keep straight for me!

    ReplyDelete
  48. true enough! reading blogs opens minds and expands vocabularies. I have vignettes in every room, pops of color, a gallery wall, even outdoor rooms. But not a dragon in the mix!

    ReplyDelete
  49. What a great post - so very true. :) My mantel will be the death of me for sure.

  50. let's just say quite a bit has changed in my home since reading design blogs. all in a good way though! i seriously needed some design help & blogs have been wonderful & prevented me from having to spend a lot of money having people come in to advise me. i've been able to develop my own sense of style.

  51. Reading design blogs has taught me that an object cannot just sit on a table, but rather, it must be cloched.
Design blogs have taught me that I must have been way ahead of the game and made/done many "new ideas" years ago before I knew it was stylish.
Design blogs have just confirmed what evert sensible woman already knew...canning jars are indespencible.

  52. all of this is so true! and I never would have thought of lacquering the interior side of my front door!

  53. Lanvin One of the baggage There's no doubt that about the smallest nonetheless in all probability get the a lot of apply outside of is definitely this facial bag. I personally use them them daily, them trip by using me plus, to be honest, I actually don’t bring very good caution than me. I ought to bring improved caution of it, but rather I actually think I actually bring this cute minimal facial travelling bag for approved. The simple truth is, it's topic of time right until I actually fully grasp I have to upgrade them plus when this working day can come, I can predictably be used by way of wonder plus under-prepared. In lieu of longing until this present-day
Lanvin Bag bites a debris, I’ve chosen to try a little something innovative plus planahead.

  55. hahaha! so cute and so true!! And Im in the family of Sneak Peek- a Peak is the top of a mountain. And yes Ikat always stumped me so does Beni Ourain & oushak rug

  57. oh my gosh, what a great post.

i never knew what milkglass was, or mercury glass, and i did a heck of a lot less thrift store shopping!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yes, yes, and yes to all those things. I just styled my fall mantel this weekend so I guess I am a design blog reader after all ;)

    ReplyDelete
  59. That is too funny! I never really thought about it, but I have learned a ton from reading design blogs :)

    ReplyDelete
  60. I never would have dreamed of spending $100 on a pillow before I started reading design blogs.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I've learnt a lot of terms (pretty much all the ones you mentioned and in the comments above!). I am off to Google how to pronounce ikat right after I finish this comment!

One thing I wish that design bloggers (not you, speaking in general) WOULD learn is that 'waalaa' is not a word, the correct word is voilà.

I am convinced Millions of French people turn in their graves each time this beautiful word is abused and misused.

  62. After reading design blogs I started a business and started blogging. My first introduction into the blog world was Cote De Texas. Thanks Joni for opening up a new world for me!

    ReplyDelete
  63. So true and so funny. I find that I am so tapped in to the trends because of blogging and it's actually a detriment sometimes. My clients actually think I'm crazy when I present ideas that are brand new b/c they aren't mainstream enough to be considered...white appliances, brass and gold accents.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Now I want an "accent" color in every room. And speaking of color, how do you paint a hallway door? Do you remove it from the frame or paint in position?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Haha, hilarious!! and so true! I relate to every one!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I remember being confused at first if I was supposed to say "styled" or "staged." So funny! Now I just get stressed because I can't produce 4-5 posts a week...Why do we do this to ourselves?! :)
