Our Breakfast Room: Lighting & Other Updates

Thought you might like to see the latest addition to our breakfast room:

We replaced the lighting with a chandelier I found on Overstock.  This was what was there before:

I ordered this one because it was big and it was a good price for the size.  Plus, I figured I could make it a little more modern by ditching the shades and adding globe bulbs.

I don’t know about you, but when I order from Overstock, I rely pretty heavily on the customer reviews.  Everybody said the same thing about this light.  It was a great price but a pain in the neck to put together.  After three hours of assembling on a Sunday afternoon, my husband would agree:

I personally think it was worth his effort :)

And, on a side note, Overstock didn’t pay me for this post.  I just like to tell you what I think about things because that’s what I do . . .

You might recognize the farmhouse table from our old dining room.  I started out using the old chairs in this space, too, but it was amazing what crud my kids could cram into the caned backs.  I found these chairs on Craigslist for a great price, and they’re so much easier to wipe down.

Next up?  Paint and curtains.

  1. The look on your husband's face is precious :) ...my husband refuses to replace any more light fixtures - I just wish I knew of your great taste before the last one he did replace went in! Your fixture is awesome - Looking forward to seeing the paint color!

  17. I changed my chandelier bulbs out a while back to little globes with the Reveal lighting and WOW, what a difference. I am learning it is the little things that can make a HUGE impact. Quick question, I am thinking of reupholstering a couple of wing back chairs and an antique gooseneck rocker that belonged to my great-grandmother and was given to me by my aunt. Is it as easy as some of the DIY blogs make it look or should I steer clear? Thanks for your advice!

  18. I suggest you tell your husband how sexy and cute he looks putting that light together. Just as men do when they take out the trash or whatever chore you hate to do. Praise him to the heavens. Perserverance pays off. The light looks great.

  25. Well you're a lucky lady to have a hubby that would spend 3 hours of his Sunday putting together a chandelier. Pretty sure that wouldn't happen over here:) Looks amazing and worth the effort.

  26. Love that new light...looks fantastic over your table. I have definitely seen "that look" before while trying to assemble something. The best was the time we opened the instruction booklet and they had a picture of a monkey with a screwdriver in his hand! Ha! But my hubby was not laughing hours later...

  33. Thanks, everybody! For those who asked, we bought our table from Ashley Furniture several years ago. We bought the set with the matching chairs but I ended up selling those on Craiglist because I wanted something more mismatched (of course).

  34. @Holly About the DIY reupholstering. . . I'm not the one to ask. I've never attempted it, nor do I have plans to. I am thinking it would be one big disaster if I tried to do anything more than recover a chair seat :)

Jenny at Little Green Notebook probably has the best step by step tutorials for upholstery projects. Good luck!

  35. Love the chandelier but the chairs caught my eye first! Bright white chairs are beautiful and really stand out. I love your table too. :)

  36. i have the EXACT same "before" chandelier over the dining table in my rental house. it is just so...meh. nothing hideously wrong with it, but not a great looking fixture. no one else seems bothered by it but me. good to see you know a "meh" fixture when you see it, and replaced it!

  42. I've been catching up on your blog most of the morning without commenting, but after laughing out loud at your husbands look while working on the chandelier, I had to say something! Too funny!

I'm loving how your home is coming together little by little. It looks great Emily!

  43. “…but when I order from Overstock, I rely pretty heavily on the customer reviews.” – We share the same approach, Emily. Checking credible reviews and feedback lets me have a quick look into the furniture’s attribute and functionality. =)
