Baskets and Books

I spotted this Ballard Designs photo over on Sherry’s blog and liked the way they had used simple baskets for book storage to give a neutral room more texture:

Such an easy update!  And, these water hyacinth baskets (which look very similar) from The Container Store are on sale for a great price right now:

You could further customize them by adding numbers or labels.  I’ve always liked this look:

If you don’t want to make them yourself, Etsy is great source for inexpensive number tags:

  3. I love it..gotta get to a container store. I hear you refer to it a lot, and I've only been there a few times years ago..It's kind of far from me, but sounds like it's worth a field trip!

  4. I have two of the large Container Store baskets on the bookshelves in our den/kitchen area. We do not have an official entryway, so each child has a school shelf and their bookbags fit right into the baskets when they finish their homework. The baskets have tamed a clutter area!

  5. I love the look of those baskets so bought a houseful of them for a beautiful storage solution.

BUT one slight problem...we experienced a very wet summer and pretty much every basket ended up with mould on it. Once the mould is in it then it is a dead loss - I tried everything to get rid of it (bleach, vinegar, strong sunlight, scrubbing with a brush etc etc). But it would just come back and wreck whatever was in the basket.

So just thought I'd mention it as a warning to those who live in humid climates! Those who don't would probably be fine - my baskets were fine throughout our Winter.

  10. I love the look of natural elements added to neutral decor -- and a basket is a great way to do that. And numbering them? What a cute idea!

  11. Silly me...I love the look of hardback books, artfully arranged with other treasures. Bookcases are so fun to decorate and baskets certainly add another dimension.
