I know, I know. Almost every design blogger and their dog has done a DIY project using rope, but I didn’t want to be left out. Rope is one of my favorite accessories for summer because it instantly adds texture (with a slightly nautical feel), and it’s cheap.
I found this hurricane several years ago on a clearance aisle because it was missing it’s base.
That was easily solved with a $6 roll of sisal rope, a hot glue gun, and a few slightly burned fingers.
I used more rope that I bought by the yard at Lowe’s and just dropped it in a glass bowl for an easy, summer arrangement on our sofa table. (How’s that for some mad DIY skills?)
I found the huge piece of driftwood, btw, for $25 at the flea market.
Want to see some other fun things bloggers have made with rope? Here’s a quick round up:
Check out the pendant light in the corner. This was made using sisal rope, an inflatable ball and an inexpensive light kit:

Carmel at Our Fifth House wrapped an old door with rope to achieve a much less expensive version of this Pottery Barn headboard:

Fun and interesting post . I have had a few burned fingers thanks to glue guns myself!!
ReplyDeleteI did some coiled pots of my own! Have to check them out! http://sadieandstella.blogspot.com/2012/06/summer-series-diy-coil-pots.html
ReplyDeleteQue lindo essa decoração com cordas. Quando estava na escola primaria, fiz um abajur de cordas. Adorei as sugestões.
ReplyDeleteTenha um ótimo dia.
Yeah, I love whimsical rope projects!! Check out my wall clock http://mycraftyhomelife.blogspot.com/2012/01/coastal-wall-clock-diy.html
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I love the entire vignette. I love a subtle nautical feel, and this is perfect. The driftwood is also amazing!
ReplyDeleteI have been using rope for a long time in my home projects...I actually had no idea it was the "in thing" to do!! Thanks for all the other idea images...I have tons of rope left in many different colors, I think I will try the lamp shade first...Thanks Emily! :) ~Kim
ReplyDeleteI have been thinking about doing that myself-- now I might just have to do it since yours turned out so well.
ReplyDeleteI do have one suggestion. How about flipping the large piece of driftwood over. The left side of the console feels "heavy" because of the lamp and the larger part of the driftwood. If you were to flip it so that the large part is on the right, I think it would feel much more balanced.
Just a thought!

Feeling the need to go buy some rope. Working on a beach house for someone and it would be perfect. Those are all so inspiring. I can't believe I missed Carmel's headboard. Great roundup and I love your hurricane.
ReplyDeleteEmily I was on that isle the other day looking for rope to make bracelets (that's another story!).
ReplyDeleteWhile waiting in line, I was flipping through a mag and saw the prettiest table setting where they used rope in a clear vase similar to what you did! Then I saw a table setting where they used it on the table. I told myself I'll be back for more rope!
Great use of rope:)
Thanks for the shout out! I love all of these projects. Your hurricanes look great! And I LOVE that piece of driftwood!
ReplyDeleteGreat projects using rope and I love the driftwood.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, Emily! Love your ideas!
ReplyDeleteWhere have I been? Was my head in the sand? No rope happenings over here, but the look is sweet! The driftwood is wonderful! Natural sculpture!
