Every house has a story. I think that’s why we can get so emotionally attached to them—or not, depending on the memories we make there. It’s hard to believe that we’ve been in our “new” house for a little over a year. And, I’m realizing I’ve never really shared much of a home tour. So, here are several of the pictures I snapped the day we closed on the house last June, and some highlights of our family’s first twelve months here.
We bought the house from a sweet lady (who I hear checks the blog; I hope she likes our changes!). She and her late husband built it about twelve years ago, and I could tell there was a lot of love and attention to detail that went into it from the first moment I walked through the door. As the saying goes, it just had “good bones”.
This was the formal dining room that we changed into our home office:
I loved the spaciousness of the breakfast room and kitchen—for good reason. We spend lots of time here:
The living room (you can see a glimpse of my progress here) . . .
This is the master bedroom, which leads to the master bath, which leads to the closet:
We took down the window treatments and painted the bedroom earlier this year. See the new color here.
I plan on changing the wallpaper, but I have zero experience with taking it down. I’ll be sure to blog about that when it happens :)
The master closet was a surprise when we first looked at the house, with lots of custom built-ins. This could be a great “dressing room” some day, but for now, we also use it for baby supplies and the occasional game of hide and seek:
The powder room—and most likely my next project:
The laundry room with lots of storage, which makes me really happy:
One of the kids’ bedrooms—both look basically like this:
And, the space I spend the least time in but am probably the most thankful for—our playroom:
Wouldn’t that window nook be perfect for something like this?
Our first “dinner party” the night we moved in:
I think I told you that we were in the middle of the Better Homes & Gardens shoot (at the old house) at the same time we were moving. But, we were so excited to stay here that we slept without any furniture for the first couple of nights :)
We also learned that along with mature landscaping comes a lot of work. My dad spent a whole day of their first visit trapped in our shrubs with a trimmer.
During the first year, we’ve had fun celebrating birthdays,
The colors of the seasons,
Holidays,
And “BIG” surprises . . .
And, almost one year exactly after our move-in day, we moved in two new family members:

Arriving home from the hospital and slightly scared to death :)
Thanks for sharing in our first, fun year in this house.

congrats to you on all fronts!

ReplyDeleteWhat an exciting year for you all! Your home does have great bones and you are doing an amazing job considering all the life changes as of late! Wallpaper removal tip ..warm to hot water and vinegar mixed in a spray bottle. Spritz it on, wait a bit and scrape it off. Worked like a charm. All the best to you and your beautiful family!

ReplyDeleteoh what a special story - i love this. your littles are so flippin cute. and you are such an amazing person to juggle it all - 5 kids, a home, a design business, a remodel/update, a hubby, etc etc :) great job emily - i love the story of your home (and your familY).
ReplyDeleteps - what was the littlest one for halloween on the left? those ears were KILLING ME :)
ReplyDeleteWow! What a year.
ReplyDeleteI have tons of experience stripping wallpaper. I have a wallpaper steamer but I prefer this method the most..... get a wallpaper tiger (it scores the paper) and rub that all over the wall. Then take a spray bottle and fill with really hot water and a few tablespoons of fabric softener. Spray spray spray. let sit a few minutes and then spray spray again. As it soaks in, start to scrap off with a wide putty knife. Dont waste your money on that slimy DIF wallpaper remover. It just makes a huge mess.
Sooo nice! Congrats!!! I love how you chronicled your first year! I have twins also- identical boys and as scary and hard as the first few months are it is absolutely amazing to watch them grow together!
ReplyDeleteNow that's a story worth telling. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited to see the tour!! I've been waiting for it. Yay! Love the home - all that awesome molding! Is it on a large lot/ land? The yard looks big.

What a wonderful, exciting year, and a great way to recap it!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a year you've had! So many memories for your home in just one year! Your home is beautiful (so is your yard) and I can't wait to continue to read while you make it your family's own!!
ReplyDeleteI want to comment to the former owner, that is if she reads the comments section. The house is a beauty for sure and it must have been so difficult to leave it. On the upside it's good to know that a family who will get many years of pleasure will love living there. I wish you much happiness.
ReplyDeleteFun memories and so many to come! Between Naps on the Porch had some great wallpaper removal advice! :)
ReplyDelete@Naz-- I agree. I hope she knows how thankful we are to be able to live here :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a heartfelt post! Love seeing the memories that a home provides! Your house is full on all counts! Congratulations!!
ReplyDeleteSlightly scared to death -- I understand, but it is working out one day at a time, yes?
ReplyDeleteThis is so fun Emily! I love how your house is beginning to reflect you and your family. And Im sure once your all done decorating Better Homes & Gardens will be back for another photo shoot!
ReplyDeleteI love this post, and I love seeing your memories! Your home is lovely!
ReplyDeleteas a nyc dweller, i look at your house and see TONS of space! i have to admit when you wrote your post on how you were going to fit 5 kids in 2 bedrooms - i stressed for you girl!!! but with that dressing room and playroom in your back pocket, you have plenty of room. i guess living in nyc, we are constantly looking at what we can 'convert' in to a room. many of people build cribs in their master closet (have to build it in their bc you can't fit it through the door). it's quiet, dark and their own space. i know, not ideal. you could easily set up the twins in your huge closet for a good while - or what about having a door built on the playroom and having some of those amazing bunk beds built for all the girls and give your son his own room? nonetheless, you have a beautiful home and an even more precious family. you make it all look so easy! best wishes to you and your family emily - we love reading your blog!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to live in that house!! And congrats on your two new babies!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great first year! And your home is looking lovely. Keep building memories and stacking them over, that's how the house becomes a great home.
ReplyDeleteOne year! How did that happen? What a beautiful look back, Emily. So many more memories to come!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe it has been a year....There is so much more that makes a house a home beside decor....bringing in 2 new babies, love and laughter are what memories are made of :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post! Here is to another year of great events and memories!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for taking us along on the beautiful ride!!
ReplyDeleteCongrats :) Its been a year already!!! Thank you for taking us on this journey with you Emily!
ReplyDeleteSo fun to look back and see all of the changes in the first year of the new house!
