Our Patio: Before, During and After Photos

Alright, sorry for the big teaser post yesterday.  As promised, here’s the rest of the photos of our patio finished for the summer season.

This is how our patio has looked since we moved in last summer:

Arranging outdoor rooms can be just as tricky as indoor spaces.  Besides the grill, we also wanted to include comfy seating (and a place for naps), and a small table and chairs (that we already had) so the kids could eat outside as much as possible this summer.

Once the furniture arrangement was in place, I added an outdoor rug (that had been rolled up in our garage) to define the “lounging area” and brought in color with my accessories and a few plants.

These old ice cream stools came from my parents’ attic.  I had thought of using them indoors, but they weren’t kind to our wood floors and they ended up making better side tables outdoors:

This empty (covered) corner was the perfect place to add a lamp.  I can actually read out here at night (well, you know—in theory).  I used the big, metal panel that I’ve had for a while as art.  I would like to work on another art piece for this spot (I have some ideas) but for now, the friendly lion is here to stay.

Our cat wanted to be part of the action.  Did I ever tell you the story of how we ended up with two identical cats?  Yeah, I’ll save that for another day.

And, in case you’re wondering, I’m happy to report that we actually use this space on a daily basis.

  10. Love it! There's just something extra inviting about comfortable seating on a patio isn't there.

  11. I love that you created an outdoor space as you would have decorated indoors. The table with lamp and other decor is an awesome idea. Love the rug too btw!

  12. Question: where did you get your throw pillows? On the search to add a little pop to my patio w/new throw pillows. Also, love your pops of green! Good stuff.

  14. That turned out so great! The perfect space to enjoy your lovely tree-filled yard. I am jealous of your big lots garden stools, I can not find one for less than $100 bucks! (our big lots went out of business) :(

  15. I love creating an outdoor space to relax and enjoy during the summer months. I can just imagine you in this space "relaxing"...with two babies on your lap and 3 kiddos running around your feet! :)

  16. This is beautiful! I do have a question, though. Your patio has a wonderful cover, but I frequently see people set up beautiful outdoor rooms in uncovered spaces and I have always wondered about maintenance.

With the gorgeous outdoor furniture that has cushions, outdoor rugs, etc., what do people do when it rains? Do you have to take it all up if you think it will rain? We had outdoor cushions on an outdoor swing and they got really dirty and looked awful after being rained on a couple of times. I'd love to have a nice outdoor space, but it rains where we live in the summer and I've always wondered how we'd manage.

    Thanks!

  32. It's beautiful Emily! I just read your story in BHG too! Loved seeing you and your sweet family. I have a question about your outdoor patio - how did you end up hanging the mirror on the brick? I am wanting to hang some things outside on ours - but I want it to be durable enough...any tips??

  40. I am happy to report that pregnancy with twins did not hamper you design ability one bit!!! Work it girl!

  41. I chuckled when I read about a place to "read". I'm sure a Mom of 5 including newborn twins, it will be more of a place to "breath". I love what you've done and it's the perfect place to relax with the family.

  42. I'm dittoing the earlier question about "What do you do if it rains"? And, do you leave the lap out there all the time? What about wind? I'm thinking about our backyard, and it would never work to leave something like a lamp outside (we have squirrels and birds and neighborhood cats that like to visit our deck). This space is beautiful (and I would love something similar), but I would also love to hear the practical side of this - as in, do you take the pillows in or store them when you're not using it or if it rains? Thanks!!

  43. @Carrie-- When I know a big rain is coming, we throw the cushions on the couch underneath the covered part of the patio. Otherwise, we just leave them out. You can always buy the zippered storage bags for cushions, but I haven't invested in them for now. I was able to put the lamp out because it sets back in the covered corner.

  44. We're looking around for some outdoor furniture and I noticed the couch you have from Target is now out of stock. The accessories make your room! love that shade of green, leaf. Enjoy your space as you hold your babies. You need a glider out there!

  45. Looks great Emily! Your cat is identical to our cat, Luke!

  46. Love all the fun splashes of green! You did a beautiful job. I am on the hunt for a mirror to use outdoors - but even better would be having one already that I can re-invent like you did. I love it when that happens - like all new pieces, but without the price tag. :)
