A Little Leopard (in our living room)

Another experiment in using what I have. . . . Remember the brown chair and ottoman I had in the corner of our last family room?

We’ve been using the ottoman in our new family room, but the brown was a little heavy with the white slipcovered chairs.

I’ve also been wanting to add an animal print somewhere in the mix.  So, I ordered a yard of this fabric:

Panthera Celedon

(Now on sale for less than $17/yard.)

The new, improved ottoman:

This was another project I recruited my aunt’s help for while she was visiting.  Since I’m never great at neat corners, I grabbed the camera and documented her process.

Start by stapling the sides:

Fold and staple corners next:

She measured the same distance on each side of the corner, marking the fabric where she would fold:

On another subject, I’ve had several questions about the jute rug we ordered from Pottery Barn and how it’s holding up.  I’m happy to report that it’s still going strong.  It’s taken a lot of abuse from our kids (some of which is probably too gross to mention)  and still looks great.  I occasionally have to trim a few stray strands here and there, but nothing major.  So, after 10+ months of use in our very busy house, it gets two thumbs up from me.

  3. This post has me wishing I didn't give an old beat up ottoman away. I love the leopard print in there! And those corners - perfection. Does your aunt make house calls???

  5. Yeah for animal print! I also just purchased your same rug (heathered chenille jute) from our local Pottery Barn store. It was on sale in April and I purchased their floor model that they had just rolled up. (An add'l 30% off!!!) It looks perfect in our new living room and couldn't be happier! Can't wait to see the rest of your room!

  12. You should totally start a series highlighting tips from your aunt. Maybe she can fill in for you when your sweet little ones arrive!

  18. Cute ottoman! On another note and I hope this isn't too weird...but Saturday is a super moon and we're wondering if this will prompt the arrival of babies! Again, I hope my excitement isn't creepy. I'm just looking forward to being a nana someday but waiting on my kids to finish seminary, etc!

  22. Wow, that looks amazing! Will the fabric be easy to remove if you want the leather look again? I might have to try this.

  24. I LOVE the chair and leopard ottoman combo! I seriously want to reach into my computer and put the whole set in my house. Pronto! :) Awesome work!

By the way - how would you rate the "softness" factor of the PB rug? We're looking into sisal/jute rugs right now and my only concern is poor baby knees crawling on the rug. Thoughts?

  25. LOVE the animal print with the white chairs! What a great choice!

  26. @Sarah Would definitely go with a wool/jute blend for softness if you're baby is going to spend lots of time on it. I think sisal would be too hard on little knees. Ours is definitely one of the softest natural rugs I've found.

  27. You know when you have guest....you are not supposed to make them work...just sayin....:)
    BUT....since you did...it looks great!

  29. Love your ottoman, of course; almost anything is great in leopard print! I do have another question regarding your slip cover on the leather chair. Does it stay in place well, or does it slip and slide? I've wondered about getting one for my leather sofa, for a change, but that has been my biggest concern.

  33. What a great transformation! I love the addition of the animal print. (LOVE the flower pillow on your chair, too!) We have an ottoman that's begging for a makeover. Hmm. Leopard print. I think I'm sold! :)

  34. Hi Emily,

Where did you find the blue pillows? I've been looking for some.
Love the ottoman. I may grab hubby's leather one as well.

  35. I love the animal print & I too have some natural fiber rugs that have held up under our dogs, which is a feat! Mine came from www.fibreworks.com They are wonderful & they let you make custom sizes and borders. They actually sell some of their products to Pottery Barn & the like.
