Hanging It Up

Besides a dirty white door, the other problem with our back hallway (that I blogged about yesterday)  was that it became a dumping ground for backpacks, jackets, shoes, etc.  It made me a little crazy and I knew hooks were the solution.  For less than $30, we were able to bring some organization to this spot.

We bought this pre-cut piece from Lowe’s, and I gave it a couple of coats of trim paint that we already had.  Then, I bought several packs of my favorite hooks from IKEA (2 for $9.99).

One of my projects for this summer (you know, in all my free time with a baby in each arm!) is to hopefully frame some of the kids’ latest and greatest art pieces to fill the wall like I did in our last house.  I’m thinking of using all white frames this time (aka painting the ones I have) to keep things bright.

And, just this week, I put all of their coats and jackets away, leaving lots of space for just their school bags.  Is it just me, or does anybody else get a thrill out of saying goodbye to coats and socks for the summer?!

So far, I’ve managed to keep the other thorn in my side (the shoe situation!) somewhat under control by giving each kid their own dollar basket from Target to keep in the laundry room.  It’s not perfect, but it’s working okay for now.

Any other tips for keeping the busiest doorway in your house from becoming chaotic?

  1. we have just one decorative basket by our door that all of the shoes the kids wear on a regular basis go in. If we had the room for each to have their own I like that idea better. hopefully the next house will allow us that. All of their other shoes go in a back of the door organizer in their room.

  2. Look at you getting organized! Looking good! I love the idea of all the kids art hung above the rack! Super cute, I'd throw a chalkboard or memo board in there for me to keep me organized!!

  7. We have a similar entryway and our laundry room is close by. I keep a 'shoe basket' on top of the dryer with loose items that I need to put away, but don't necessarily have the time to put away that minute: socks, a random shoe, tape measure, and screwdriver. It keeps things from being loose but it can sit there for a while if need be.

  8. in our home we enter from the garage door straight into the hallway that leads to the main area of the house. i would love a mudroom but there is no space. the coat closet is directly across from the entry door so you would THINK that the children could deposit coats/shoes right away. it helps that (other than flip flops) our children only have 2 pairs of shoes each, one pair of tennis shoes and one pair of church shoes. even after a full year of school i still find myself reminding them to hang up backpacks and put away shoes. oy.

  9. Those hooks are fantastic. We do the same with the bin of shoes for each one. The other saving grace for me is the pocket shoe holder that hangs on the back of a closet door for snscreen, sun hats, socks, etc. You'll be updating that hand print art soon!!!

  12. I bought some shoe organizers from Home Depot. Everyone has a couple slots and they can easily find their shoes. It all stays hidden inside a wardrobe, also from Home Depot.

  14. The shoe situation...ugh! I have counted 7 pairs lying around the family room...and I have 2 teenage boys. Why do they have so many shoes? must take after me! ;) I finally bought one BIG basket to corral them all...it has to be big for big boy sneakers...your little ones shoes all look so cute!

  16. Our solution: shoe duty after dinner. All shoes get taken upstairs. They learn quick to put them away.

  19. We bought the 4-compartment shoe cabinet from IKEA and LOVE it. We also have a set of hooks in our small entryway off the garage where I hang my purses. We also purchased the mail/key organizer from Pottery Barn. It was a bit pricey but it corrals our keys, mail, hubby's wallet, and other misc items that we need when leaving out house. I am constantly trying to think of ways to make our entryway work better. I love what you've done with your painted door, hooks, and shoe bins. Great post as usual :)

  20. That is one classy coat rack! I love the white and silver together, good Ikea find!

The coat hooks by my door are a lifesaver for jackets and handbags, but I'm still trying to figure out the best way to deal with mail that seems to come in piles every day. Going through it and dealing with it would just be too easy. ;)

Your blog is great, I'm looking forward to reading more!

  22. Emily, I LOVE your yellow door and the hooks are so perfect. Hooks are the best things ever invented, I think.

Going to check out the response to the no wax situation on your door. So curious to see what people say!

  23. Love the hooks! Shoes are my big thorn as well. I have a white slipcovered bench from IKEA that I keep ours in but of course it's still not enough and there's only 2 of us! I'd love a tall, wide cupboard filled with shelves that could span the entire width of the entry to hold our shoes and keep them from becoming the jumbled mess they are now.

  25. I am also limited on space in the hallway. Living up north, we keep an attractive shoe/boot tray under the coat rack to limit mud and snow from being tracked inside. I also have given each child a bag for each extracurricular, for example one contains soccer uniform, shin guards, another a chess board, etc. That way, there's no last minute panic as to where their soccer socks and whatnot are. I wash them and put them in the bags. Getting out the door in a timely fashion without stress is a feat! :)
