Baking Barbie

I am not a baker.  I do not like to bake, nor do I want to learn to bake.

But, this weekend, I’ll be attempting to make this girl. . .

Because I love this girl. . .

She’s turning six and long ago, requested a Barbie cake.  Wish me luck.

The good news is that she’ll probably appreciate my efforts, even if it’s not perfection.

Speaking of perfection, have you seen this post (from The Power of Moms blog) that’s been floating around Facebook over the last week? A good reminder to all of us moms raising kids in this over-blogged, over-“pinned” world.

  1. Happy Birthday to your sweet Barbie loving girl. Mine turns 6 in July. So far she's not made any special requests. Good luck - I'm so not a baker either! I loved that article! Definitely one for every mother to read!

  2. I loved my "doll cakes" that were a tradition for my birthday. There seems to have been a cottage industry baking these cakes where I grew up and I loved to visit the bakers in their homes and sit in their kitchens as they decorated my cake {mom never made mine}. This might be a helpful tip: one of the most beautiful cakes I had was made from a bundt cake for the skirt ... and chopped up cupcakes and icing were used to fill in around the doll in the center to hold her upright. No multiple tiered cake layers needed for a skirt :) Happy baking to you and happy b-day to your daughter.

  3. That cake in the fridge totally looks like how mine would turn out. Good luck with your cake, but, you're right. Your daughter will love it no matter what because her mom made it for her.
I read the post that you linked. Wow! Truer words were never spoken.

  4. Have fun celebrating and I'm sure she will love the cake!

I did see the article floating around FB this week and it is a great read. As someone who doesn't have children yet, but hopefully someday, I thought it was a valuable message!

    Have a great weekend!

  5. Love that you made a Barbie cake. I'm now a grandmother, but I did read the FB article. I felt it was sad that the Mom has so little self esteem that she could be demoralized by a pin board. Very glad her family reassured her.

  6. Oh, we are doing six over here, too! I love that you are taking on that cake! I will never forget making a pumpkin cake on Halloween and my daughter saying, "Mom, it really doesn't look like a pumpkin at all but I am sure it's really yummy!" Enjoy the process {oh. . so with you, though. I am not a baker at all!!}

  11. My daughter requested a "princess doll cake" for her 4th birthday last year. Conveniently, my sister loves to decorate cakes and she doesn't have kids yet, so she has plenty of time in the days before a party to bake, freeze, crumb coat, frost, chill, pipe, decorate more, insert doll...
It's outsourcing at it's best:) I'm sure you can do it

  12. Oh, the things we do for love. I have confidence in you but if you start feeling desperate I'm pretty sure Harris Teeter does those. Last summer when we were moving I made brownies for Lacey's 4th birthday and she has declared she MUST have them again for her 5th. Don't know how I lucked into that one!

  13. You made me laugh out loud with the doll cake. Please show us your impersonation when completed!

And I was completely humbled with the blog from The Power of Moms. I have been conscientious about putting my smartphone down and walking away from computer when my children are around lately. I started noticing the sad looks from my youngest son whenever I was on them...he just wants my attention. Thanks for showing us that blog! But I will only read it when my kids are in bed or at school! :)

  15. The bundt pan seems like a good idea. However, I know our local grocery store, Meijer, makes them. I don't think they have Meijers by you but I am sure there must be something similar.
    Good luck!

  16. Wanted to make this cake for my twin daughter's Sweet 16 party. Thought it would be funny and cute ... let's just say they vehemently disagreed. Teens are no fun! :)

  18. Do you have "Michael's " craft stores out west ? If so, go there and buy the fondant that they used to cover Barbie's skirt in the beautiful image of the Barbie cake. Wilton makes it in sheets, and they sell it at Michael's ! So easy - just lay it right on top of a thin layer of icing - that is what makes that photo of the Barbie cake so perfect !!

  19. You are a sweet mama! I am sure Barbie will be fantastic. I am not a baker either so my go to is always Duncan Hines - why reinvent the wheel. Happy Weekend.

  23. In Australia they are known as Dolly Varden cakes, I made one for my six year old, 34years ago and I used a pudding steamer to bake the cake, I remember wrapping the legs in Glad Wrap and it was my first attempt at using fondant. Enjoy the task Emily.

  26. Happy birthday to her! I have the best memories of my 1/2 princess cake. My oldest brother's birthday is just a couple of days from mine, so our mother baked one cake. One half was pink and had dressy details with a happy-meal Belle (from Beauty and the Beast). The other half was camo and had a GI-Joe with a bazooka on top. It was a huge hit, and never to be repeated, but my brother and I share the memory with each other nearly every year during our b-day week.

  27. This may be too late but when my mom baked me my Barbie doll can many years ago she used a stainless steel bow. Perfect dress shape. :)

  28. You could try to make that easy marshmallow fondant too, to cover it. That's what I would do. Easy with big wow factor.
