Decorating an entire room, start to finish, can be pricey. Andrea, however, was up for the challenge when it came to creating a retreat for her daughter in their new home.
This is what the room looked like just before they moved in:
Using paint, furniture and accessories she already had (some from her own childhood), she was able to pull the room together, spending only $425! The result:

Here are a few of my favorite details . . .
She found this chair at a local consignment shop, painted the frame and had it recovered:

A vintage stool serves as a nightstand:

Since we all love a good makeover with a small price tag, I asked Andrea to share her five best tips for adding style on a small budget:
#1 Use Color Wisely
I wanted to make a big impact by painting the ceiling a robin's egg blue.
#2 Repaint, Repurpose
I reused a desk I already had and painted it pink. I also reused a chair and painted it green. I spray painted an existing metal bookshelf blue for a punch of color.
#3 Add Detail with Trim
I dressed up a $20 chandelier with some blue rick-rack trim added to the shades.
#4 Look for Hidden Potential
I bought a $65 chair at a thrift store and had it reupholstered with some fabric found on clearance for $4/yard.
#5 Shop Clearance and Remnant Fabrics
I made large pillows for the bed from more fabric found on clearance for $4/yard. The fabric was the inspiration for the entire room makeover.

Great example of what you can do without breaking the bank. Pretty room.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty room. It's amazing what you can do on a budget. It looks more expensive than what she spent.
ReplyDeleteI just love the soft colors on the wall and ceiling and the punches of bolder blues and pinks in the accessories. Such a pretty room!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty room ! Hard to believe that's a $20 chandelier...
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that bedroom. Great upgrade to the chair, and using that stool as a nightstand is just awesome!! Thanks so much for sharing it!

ReplyDeleteGreat job and I'm sure her daughter loves it!
ReplyDeleteHuge transformation with a small budget! Wonder how much the reupholstering of the chair costs? Around here it would be $400.00.
ReplyDeleteLove the pink and green!

Okay, I need to know...what is the paint color used on the walls?? It's exactly the shade I've been looking for to repaint my own bedroom. Great transformation!
ReplyDeletei love andrea and her blog and her style- this is one of my favorite rooms she has redone! thanks for showing her talent off today!
ReplyDeleteEmily, thanks so much for featuring my daughter's room. The wall color is White Duck by SW, I originally bought the chandelier for $80. I still had it in the box and then noticed it was on clearance at Lowe's for $20. Took it back and bought another for $20. The chair cost $135 to have reupholstered. I stripped it down to the bare bones, which saved some money. Hope that answered some questions. Such a fun room to put together!
ReplyDeleteSuch a darling, fresh room and some beautiful, clever projects. The best part to me is that is is a room with staying power, easy and inexpensive to change up down the road!

Of course these colors are close to my heart....and so is the style. That is why I love a little shabby Chic style...it can look so good for so little!!!
ReplyDeleteEmily, the biggest transformation to me was getting rid of the paneling or whatever they did. That alone made a huge impact on the overall look of the room. Did she remove it, chalk and paint over it or what?
ReplyDeleteAwesome makeover! I love the vintage stool as a nightstand. That's such a cute idea.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful room! It amazes me how just little things can make such a difference. Like the new curtains, instance. The windows are not all that big, but just adding the larger panels on each side make them seem bigger and softens up the whole room! Fabulous work!
ReplyDeleteI love all the "happy colors" in that room! What a wonderful job for a great price!

ReplyDeleteAnother amazing room by Andrea! Love the little vintage green stool as a nightstand!
ReplyDeleteKelly
Gorgeous! I would think the labor cost for recovering her chair alone would cost that much!
ReplyDeleteGreat transformation! I had the same question regarding the chair and the cost. What upholstery shop? I am also in Charlotte! Thanks so much and LOVE your blog!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of adding the dainty rick rack to the shades for a little pop of color! So cute!
ReplyDeleteWow incredible she pulled this off with that budget. I love the chair, the color looks so vibrant. Really pretty!
ReplyDeleteWow, what a beauty she's turned this into!!
ReplyDeleteBTW Emily, I tagged you in a fun little game which I"ll be posting on Monday.
ReplyDeleteHere in California I wouldn't have been able to find someone to upholster that cute chair for under $400! You must have an inside deal. THe room is so perfect, thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteAshley
