Our Foyer: Progress and Plans

The last time I showed you a picture of our entry, it was in pretty sad shape.  Empty frames and of course, that dresser in front of the vent had many of you worried. . . .

So, I’ve done a little rearranging and here’s what it looks like now:

Yes, you can see the vent.  I’m working to get over that.  But, I think the pair of ottomans help some.  I just hate the leather, so I have a plan to have some tailored skirts made for them, kind of like the ones shown here:

I finally got those empty frames filled.  I bought the frames from Michaels and ordered custom mats from an Ebay seller.   A friend gave me this book for Christmas, which I promptly cut apart for the wall :)

On a side note, a handyman that I’ve worked with on some client installs gave me this little tip for gallery walls.  To keep frames straight and from shifting around, use these little rubber cabinet bumpers on the back, bottom edges of the frames.

The lamps are from HomeGoods, and I added a little color this week with some Spring blooms from our yard.

You can see from this picture that it’s a pretty big space.  (In fact, we’ll probably end up putting a piano here if we decide to get one down the road.  Right now, my kids play school in this spot a lot.)  Here’s how I’m hoping to finish it:

  2. Emily, did you see the indoor/outdoor rugs on Joss and Main this week? They are great for an entryway like yours.

  6. Love the frames, Emily! You've done a great job already! I agree on the ottomans. They'll look super!

    Have a great day.

  8. I adore your house. You really found a beautiful house to buy.

  10. I have one of those vents too- arent they so annoying? you would think someone would come up with something clever to cover them- kinda like how there are beautiful radiator covers and floor vent covers-so why not the wall ones? And I did just what you did-put an open table in front of it and I put baskets in front because the ottomans were too big for mine. LOVE the prints as well!!

  11. It looks fantastic Emily! Love the prints you chose!!

  12. Beautiful, Emily. So much better (actually the original wasn't bad - just now it's so much better) I had to laugh at the bumpers note (I too use them all the time in installations- perfect tip) Is the vent painted the wall color, it's hard to tell from the photo but sometimes that helps to 'mask' that metallic object in the room.
Great post with lots of TLC added.... Thanks for sharing this and hope you enjoy the rest of your day! coco Jalon

  13. Always love the idea of cutting up coffee table books for affordable art! Isn't it such a great feeling to make progress in your own space? I hung a large print this weekend on a wall that had been empty far too long and I couldn't be happier about it!

  17. Looks great! Did you keep the botanical gallery from the other house?

  18. The book pages look great in those frames! I think that jazzes it up so much :)

  19. The space looks amazing! After a while, you won't even realize the vent is there! Can you maybe paint the vent the same color as the wall, to make it disappear even more?

  20. Emily! I am in love with this! Beautiful.. :)

  21. Very pretty! The bird prints look SO classic and luxe! The space is coming along nicely. Oh, and the new lamps are great, too!

  22. That looks fantastic! The slipcovers will help tremendously! I think the leather is a little to "stiff" for the rest of your decor. The covers will soften all the hard lines of the space and be perfection!

Have you tried painting the registar the same color as the wall? It should help it 'hide' a little better!

  26. So pretty to see the full shot. What a great entrance. I love the way the frames turned out. Oh, and I love the idea of skirts for the ottomans. All in good time. {Thank you for your sweet message yesterday}.

  27. Looks great! I, too, have an unsightly air vent in an awkward spot. Mine is in my kitchen on the only useable wall space we have. I used a bookshelf with an open back to make sure the air gets through, but it's hard to work with. Yours looks great - and yes, getting over the air vent isn't easy :)

  28. The "chill out" part is one of the hardest. We've live in our houses (that I designed) for 10 months and this weekend we finally got around ot doing things we thought we would have done the first week! Slowly, it will all come together.

Where did you move the piece that used to be in front of the vent? I love it, so I can't wait to see where it ends up!

  29. lovely!! I think the little skirts on the ottomans will be darling :)

  30. I love it! It looks gorgeous, yet I think I may be able to pull off something similar

  31. If you have the time and energy painting the light a bold color could be fun.

Maybe adding a piece of stamped metal to the back of the table could hide the vent and bring a little texture to the space.

I like the last item on your list of things to do!

    Take care!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I love that chilling out is on your to-do list - I think I need to add that one to a few of mine! The prints are a gorgeous focal point and I think the ottoman skirts are a great idea!

  33. looks great! I was secretly worried about your vent too:)

  34. I used Audubon prints in our dining room! Oh - I feel so much more saavy now that I see you've done that, too! :) ha! I love the gallery wall of birds, though. Love birdies!

  35. I love the new look. I didn't really even notice the vent until you mentioned it.

  37. Your prints look lovely! You can also get the bumpers in the framing section at craft stores. They not only help keep your picture from moving, but they can keep the frame from scratching the wall and the picture doesn't "lean."

  38. Wow this looks absolutely gorgeous and extremely classy! xo

  39. It looks great, emily! I love those michael's frames...so light and thin. I put those command sticky squares on the back corners of mine...bc they were always wonky! (which doesn't agree with my ocd!)

ps -- my girlfriend in nashville had her 3rd girl yesterday. at home. in the tub. on purpose.

  40. Thanks for the tip on getting mats on eBay. I had no idea, but that would be very handy.

  41. What great updates! The white lamps are simple but add such great interest to the space. Love the prints with the large mats!

  43. Looks great Emily, love the gallery wall! I think once you lighten and brighten the ottomans you are going to be more than happy! I also agree with relax, you have a very busy life ahead of you with your new little one's coming. So many wonderful things happening in your life!! congrats on all fronts,

  44. I have those very same ottomans and I'm with you - not a fan of the leather. I've been kicking around recovering them, but I love your slipcover idea. Can't wait to see how it turns out. The space is looking great!

  45. Looks fantastic - loving the ottomans. Also, that umbrella stand is great!!!

  46. thanks for the picture hanging tip! Michael's is the place to buy frames for sure. Just did that, in fact. Your display is so inviting and your entry ....just right. Keep it open, more room for toddlers to walk and run.

  47. If this isn't good, then I don't know WHAT is! I love it, Emily. Especially those thin, black frames. And I can absolutely picture the slipcovers on the ottomans.

  48. Looks good so far, Emily. I would paint the light fixture first and see if that makes a difference to you - it is certaily worth a try - before you buy a new one. Great foyer space and I can see why kids would love the openness to play in.

  49. I love your gallery wall - now you can enjoy the beautiful animal pictures every day when you go in and out of your house :-)

Thanks for the tip about the little rubber bumpers on the frames - I may use them on my gallery wall. And also thanks for the tip about buying custom mats on Ebay - it never occurred to me to look there for mats!

Your entry looks great so far. I'm sure you'll get used to the vent and not even realize that it's there once the space is all done :-)

  50. I love it! This looks is much more airy and open. And yes, it doesn't have to be done in a day!

  51. I love it! I also use sticky tac on the back of my frames to hold them in place. Tailored skirts would be gorgeous! I have a leather ottoman in my family room and would LOVE a slipcover but my family can be such oinkers that I would be washing that thing all the time. So in the meantime I will stick with the leather!

  52. Wow Emily, this looks amazing. I actually really like the shape of the light fixture in your hallway. What about spraying it in a really bold colour for some fun?

  53. Hey Emily! Looking good over there girl! I had a thought for you though...you may have already processed because I am sure you have thought of this your sweet little self but what if you made the fabric slipcover for the table and then sat the ottomans on either side, you could then slip cover them in a print to add a little pattern of course once you decide what the rug will be...you can go to the board i made today on pinterest for my blog post for tomorrow for options...

  57. Emily - I was checking your blog on my lunch break, per usual, and loved this post, forwarded it to my sister, etc. And then I came home, flipped open my Pottery Barn catalog (April 2012 issue, "Dreaming of Summer"), and on pages 10/11 is an extremely similar layout to yours. I think someone at PB must be reading your blog, too!

  58. Looks amazing! I have a similar entry table and have had a difficult time finding ottomans with legs tall enough to clear the bottom bar. Where did you find these?

    ReplyDelete
  59. @Becks I ordered the ottomans from Walmart.com a few years ago.

  60. What ebay seller did you by the mats from? If you dont mind....what are the dimensions of the inside cut out on the mat....

    ReplyDelete
  61. I love the framed prints. What size are frames and what are the dimensions of the inside cut on the mat? Thanks for your help.
