Over the weekend, we said a happy goodbye. My husband and his dad took down the ceiling fan in our family room. Maybe this is a minor “home improvement” but one that I’ve been anxiously awaiting since we moved in. . .
See the problem? Look in the mirror. Yep, it was everywhere I looked and it irked me every time I looked at it. I’m not anti-ceiling fans completely, but this particular one and I didn’t hit it off from the start.
I don’t even have a replacement overhead light (still trying to decide if I even need one), so we’re just going to cap off the hole for now. Overall, it makes the room feel bigger and I can breathe again.
My husband doesn’t usually get why these little things bother me so much, but I know you do :) So, my decorating friends, what’s the one thing in your house now that’s “irking” you right now?
You can tell me. I get it.

I love this post. You are right, we get it! Just the littlest thing and it becomes the elephant in the room! You can't see anything else because that elephant is always in the way! Thanks so much for relaying 'my story' this morning! Have a great day! - Jalon

ReplyDeleteSee? Yet another reason why our husbands NEED us! :) I have an oddly place ceiling fan in our entryway (which sounds kookier than it really is), but I would totally need some go-go-gadget legs to get it down. That, or a death wish. One of these days...

ReplyDeleteSo jealous...ceiling fans are a necessity around here. Maybe I'll make my millions by designing a prettier alternative?! ha!
ReplyDeleteI say banish ALL ceiling fans forever! Clients get so mad when I tell them that :)
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain! They are so useful though....I love my fan in my bedroom because it drowns out all the sound and keeps me cool next to the furnace (aka husband) I sleep next to....any suggestions for having a pretty light fixture and fitting those criteria?
ReplyDeleteI live in Georgia and I would do anything to get my husband to agree to nix the fans. We even have one in the kitchen! Tips appreciated.
ReplyDeleteWe have severe popcorn on our walls...and that drives me insane! One of these days I will try & scrape it off. But with twin toddlers...it'll have to wait. lol.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, my master bedroom has only one window. It is in an awkward place in our room, one one corner of a big wall. It throws the entire room off. To think we didn't fix it to begin with when we were remodeling our house. It was our first house though and we had never remodeled before. It's driving me crazy enough that I want to find a new house or remodel our bed room again. My husband just doesn't understand.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely feel ya on the ceiling fan issue. We are renting so I have to deal with it, though! And my beef is not just the fan in general but the fact that they installed the ugliest, cheapest ceiling fan on the market. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteIn Texas ceiling fans are a must. I would love to get a prettier option! I know what you mean about little things bugging you. I have a list of things that irk me too. Time to get off my duff and tackle them now. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure the fan's removal makes a world of difference even it is subconscious. I, too, have an irking eye sore that we will just call an off center pendant light that our builder put in place.
ReplyDeleteSo feel confident you are not alone, in being plagued by those little things!
My bedroom ceiling fan makes yours look like a high-end designer model! :)
ReplyDeleteThat would have driven me crazy too! I would have to say for me it is our ceiling fan in our family room. It is white laquer with brass accents...the only thing left brass in our house from when we first bought it in the early 90s. But, since it is two stories up (we have 20 foot ceilings in that room) it requires hiring someone to take it down and install the new one (it's hot here, we like our fans). Just not a big priority.
ReplyDeletebye bye fan.... oh, and GO CATS!!!
ReplyDeleteI have the same relationship with a ceiling fan in my kitchen... I hate it. And my husband thinks its necessary. I want it gone soo bad!

MY LAUNDRY ROOM!! It never bothered me until I started seeing all these pictures on Pinterest of really beautiful laundry rooms. (Thanks, Pinterest!) It wouldn't be so much of a problem except that we have one of those house where no one ever uses the front door. They all come in through the laundry room, so it's the first thing anyone sees. Our old dryer is still working and it's the kind with the control panel across the back, so it prevents me from putting a nice shelf or something over the top. When that sucker finally dies, all bets are off! And right now, there's a $10 PLASTIC shoe bench from Ikea in there. The horror. Our cabinet maker is coming over next to measure for a built-in. Should've done that when we built the house.
ReplyDeleteMy boyfriend and I have the classic ceiling fan debate often. I hate them, he loves them. I'd be OK with them if they looked neat, but I've never been able to find any reasonably priced. Sigh. The debate continues....
ReplyDeleteOh Emily. My husband and I just moved in to our house a few months ago. The previous owners hung a ceiling fan in the dining room, so instead of a pretty chandelier, we have an outdated, 4 blade ceiling fan hanging over us as we eat.
ReplyDeleteI would have to say that in our house we have a huge vaulted ceiling for our living room and it drops down to a normal height for our dining area. The builder placed a typical unattractive lighting fixture very uneven in that space- so if we line up our up table correctly with the light - you cant get out the back door. Its ugly and out of place!
ReplyDeleteIt is totally my ceiling fans too!! They are the ones that were installed when they built the house soo they are not even modern looking, the wood.... the shiny fake gold... and those 3 lights...ugh ugh ugh!
ReplyDeleteI hate the ugly "boob" ceiling light in our upstairs hall. It's got an amber colored glass shade and every time it gets turned on it makes things look so gross and dirty. I ordered a fun new chic semi-flush mount about a week ago and I can't wait to replace it.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand all the "hatin" going on over ceiling fans. =P Now, don't get me wrong I don't love the look of them but we use ours all the time in our house...could not live without them!! I have them in every room except the dining room. :) I just wonder, is there anyone else out there like me? ;) =D
ReplyDeleteOh gosh. It is totally our ceiling fans for me too! We have a matching pair, one in the living room and one in the family room. They're over the top, HUGE, and cast a really yellow light. I can't wait to get rid of them!
ReplyDeleteJenna
ugh I hate ceiling fans-but unfortunately here in Texas they are a must- so I tell my clients-if you HAVE to have one purchase the plain white ones with out light kits. The white ones will blend in with the white ceiling & not be as noticeable. I recently toured some local multi million dollar homes in a parade of homes & thats what they all had in their bedrooms- so I figure if its good enough for the millionaires its good enough for me. ;-)
ReplyDeletep.s.- LOVE you living room wall color- gray right? Id love to know the color if you dont mind sharing.
For me, it's also the ceiling fan in our master bedroom! It's the overhead lighting in the space, and I cannot wait to change it out for a chandelier. I was thinking of using a lantern style! :) I'm excited for you, because I totally get it! :)
ReplyDeleteI still have 70's paneling on one room, Im embarrassed to say, but I love the warmth and woodsiness, hate painted paneling, and keep masking the problem with tons of art, full lenght mirrors, etc.The room has wooden beams, a whole brick fireplace wall... I need to get over it, and hire someone to drywall... gotta save up though!

Ugg, I cannot stand our shower curtain/bathroom decor in general. When the husband and I got married, he kept his shower curtain and I cannot stand it. It's pretty masculine and doesn't match with our tile. The worst part is the husband doesn't understand!
ReplyDeleteI can tolerate the ceiling fans,if only I could convince my husband that's is necessary to replace all those awful boob lights in our house!

Oh no- I totally get this. My husband comes from a long line of ceiling fan "fans". I rather open a window. We hung one over our bed- one of the only things he has asked for during our renovating/decorating process - whereas I was really hoping to hang something fabulous. But sharing a house means compromising too and sometimes I need to tame my decorating instinct a bit and give in to a little function.

Emily! Amen! I hate ceiling fans. Have replaced every single one in our house...many with restored fixtures from our Restore (and one done almost exactly like your office one!!). Also, just want to let you know, your office is absolutely breathtaking! Your blog is my #1 site I go to for inspiration in my own blogging process! Thanks for being such amazing inspiration! xoxo ~ Virginia from www.livelovediy.com
ReplyDeleteI had the same problem as you- a super ugly ceiling fan and a round mirror above my fireplace so I had to look at the dang thing TWICE. It was awful. I blogged about it here if you want to see just how unbelievably ugly it was: http://inside-outdesign.blogspot.com/2011/12/my-plan-for-giant-bowl.html (after this post it got nicknamed "madonna".)
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to tell you though that it's down from the ceiling and has been replaced with a much better looking light!
If there's something in a room that bothers me it's as if it's electrically charged. I just can't help being drawn to it the second I enter the room. I try to tell myself it's what makes us good designers:)
ReplyDeleteOur ceiling fan is bugging me too! My husband finally agreed we could get rid of it, but we have yet to find a replacement, so it stays
ReplyDeleteThere's a wall air conditioning unit in the family room addition that drives me crazy. It competes for attention on the wall with the fireplace and two large windows. Some day, I'll look into removing it. But for now, I draped pretty fabric over it, which I'm getting tired of now, too! My poor house. Sometimes, it just can't win with me.
ReplyDeleteWe have major ceiling fan issues. Three fans, three different styles -- all outdated. I want to replace them with plain white, no-light fans so I don't have to look at them anymore!
ReplyDeleteHmmm, irking me. Besides the fact that we have slab foundation and I have lamp cords everywhere?! How much time do you have?!
ReplyDeleteNo, I'm grateful for our home and all I'm able to do to it. Would I take down all the brass ceiling fans?? In a second! But how do you forgo one in the bedroom? Mama gets hot and has night sweats!!! tmi?
I got rid of the ceiling fan in my family room before Christmas last year - I just realized I forgot to blog about it! I put in a chandy in it's place - so. much. better!
ReplyDeleteThe ceiling fan (similar to yours) I can see in the round mirror over the fireplace!! :)
ReplyDeleteEither that our our horrible vinyl floors in the kitchen, nook, and laundry room.
You are lucky to be rid of it -- and to have a husband who will do the work.
Camille
I don't mind ceiling fans, but the FLAT paint finish on every wall in my house is driving me crazy. There are spots and scrapes everywhere and we've lived in the house less than a year.
ReplyDeleteI so understand. We have a ceiling fan without a light in our family room that I can't stand. However, living in Dallas, we really need it during the summer. I need to find one that looks acceptable if that even exists! I know you're enjoying having yours gone!
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain over the ceiling fan! Hate them myself and try to discourage clients from using them but some people just have to have those fans!
ReplyDeleteI can relate to the ceiling fan dilemma - so unattractive but so needed in GA.
ReplyDeleteMy laundry room drives me crazy! When I put the clothes in the basket from the dryer, the room is so narrow that I can't turn around with the basket in my arms. So I have to back out of the laundry room every time. I swear I hear the "beep beep beep" of a large truck every time I leave. Depressing!

Aargh...that we don't have a designated office and that our closets are miniature (no storage space on the second floor). So you know I have my wish list well planned out for our next home.
ReplyDeleteThankfully our new home has nicer, newer fans. What bugs ME is a lack of curtains. We have ten ft. ceilings and great light, a nice view out back...so I don't want to block the light or the view...but the family room/eating area lacks softness and the "pretty factor." And the windows just look bare and the room, unfinished. I just know that once we get them, we'll be surprised at the difference it makes! Siiiggghh....someday.
ReplyDeleteYay! Banish the ceiling fan! I only wish I could get rid of ours, but it is WAY too hot here for that.
ReplyDeleteI did a similar post on how to deal with the evils of ceiling fans this week on my blog

I'd love it if you would check it out and become a follower.

Mauve carpets and popcorn ceilings! The bookends of my home are terrible, but otherwise I've decorated well around it. :) I can't complain too much, though, since my rent happens to be free! haha
ReplyDeleteNonetheless, I so relate. It's nice to have design-loving friends/followers when the hubby just doesn't see it. :)
Our bathroom and closet window treatments. The front of our house has symmetrical windows and our boys' room has new pristine, white wood blinds and the three windows in the same "line" are old, dingy, yellow, smaller ones. EVERY TIME I drive out of my drive way, I see those puppies and can't wait to have them replaced! I totally get it :) ~gina
ReplyDeleteI totally know what you mean! I would love to get rid of the one in our bedroom in favor of something a bit more aesthetically pleasing but the hubs is all about the fan when he sleeps.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have any ceiling fans in our house. We're okay durning the winter months, but the A/C is runs constantly during the summer months. Is there any ceiling fan option out there that is acceptable?
ReplyDeleteWe recently moved into a different house. For the most part we like things "as is" with some minor changes to come. But the pale blue walls with one battleship gray wall in what's now our office, had-to-go- right-away! The entire room got a beautiful soft off-white color called Roman Column from Sherwin Williams. Now we can breathe again too!
ReplyDeleteI completely get it! I hate ceiling fans! I wouldn't let my husband put any in our new house when we built. I finally gave in last year and 'let' him put one in the media room/ man cave. They are an eye sore! It's really hard to decorate a room around one.
ReplyDeleteJennifer
Get it! :)
ReplyDeleteI get that! I was that way about our Dining Room light, which wasn't centered on a built-in niche. It drove me CRAZY! I finally talked Ryan into moving it by convincing him we needed to replace the light fixture. But my real motive was getting that sucker centered properly. We did it HERE.
ReplyDeleteI have to have a fan on at all times. Quirky little habit that I can't get rid of....
ReplyDeleteAnd HOLLA to your hubby for rocking the Kentucky shirt! Whoop whoop!
Ugly or not, I'm keeping my dated old ceiling fan! Keeping the AC bill manageable in the summer and spreading the wood stove heat in the winter make it worth it. I would love an updated variety - one that is just there, not all big, trendy, or annoyingly dated. I want it to blend into the look of the room, not stand out.

ReplyDeleteI have just purchased a house with a ceiling fan, we are not even in the house yet and it causes me anxiety!
ReplyDeleteIf we’re talking ‘bout “irkings” here, I would say that it’s our cat’s door. We still haven’t created one, but I’m thinking of having one. We have plenty of cats right now and my dilemma is the door. On the other hand, I think yours is pretty simple. But a woman would do everything just to solve the dilemma that has been running in her mind, right? :D
