Real Life vs. “Styled” Life

I tried my best to cover all of the details in Monday’s post on my home office, but wouldn’t you know the number one question I got was how do I plug in the lamp on my desk? :)  It’s a great question, actually, and here’s the answer:

IMG_0026

In the days where any picture you post on your blog or online could live forever on Pinterest, I think the art of styling your photographs is more important than ever.  For that reason (and because I don’t know how to Photoshop them out), I carefully used electrical tape to bundle and hide the cords.

I only recently added the desk lamp and am still testing it out.  A floor outlet may eventually be a possibility but for now, I just run the cord down the front leg of the table and to the side wall where the window is.  The chair in the corner helps to disguise it, and it actually doesn’t bother me that much.

IMG_0027

I have the same problem with my laptop cord, which I also run to the side wall when I need to charge it.  But, that’s life.  Real life.  In fact, here’s some more real, “un-styled” life for you since we’re on the subject:

IMG_0015

The foam for my girls’ headboard project has now landed in our foyer and is a favorite toy. . .

I always get comments from people saying they don’t know how I get it all done.  I don’t!  And, I would never want to make anyone feel like they’re not doing enough.  Projects are unfinished.  The house is a mess.  It’s impossible to live life at a break-neck speed and it look like anything else.

I went to a friend’s house yesterday (we had coffee and at the last minute, she asked me to come look at a few things in her house afterwards).  She has four kids, and apologized over and over for the mess, but I honestly wasn’t phased.  It made me feel better.  (In fact, I wanted to take her over to my house right then to assure her mine was at least ten times worse.)  The thing about messes are, they don’t bother me at all—unless they’re my own.

More real-life for you. . .

IMG_0016

My desk on a typical day.  A defective lampshade, work projects, my kids’ artwork, randomness. . .

IMG_0017

You know how I loved a beautifully styled coffee table.  Here’s ours this morning.  Catalogs, our Bible story book, toys, shoes, and clothes that they’ve outgrown that I started sorting two  nights ago.  This is a small coffee table; just imagine what we could do with a big one!

IMG_0020

Something strange is going on under the pillows on our sofa.

IMG_0024

To save time and effort (apparently), we keep all drawers open at all times.

IMG_0025

Perfect! Plastic grapes in my closet.  In case I get pretend hungry while I’m getting dressed.  There’s a surprise around every corner, really.

Does this make you feel better, or think worse of me?  Sorry if it was all TMI.  I just want to assure you that everything you see on this blog (and others) isn’t necessarily what you would get if you just happened to show up at my front door on a random afternoon.

Back to our office makeover (and a pretty picture to end this dreadful post). . . .Another good question from one commenter was how does the open space work with small kids running around?

IMG_9982

When we first looked at the house, my thought was to someday build walls and close it off more. But, I’ve actually learned to like being in the middle of everything that’s going on. It does mean that I have frequent visitors sitting in my lap while I answer email. Of course, I do most of my blogging and computer work after the kids go to bed or the days they’re all in school.

View from my lap. . .

Wow, this post was just suppose to be about my lamp cords and I kind of went off on a tangent.  Sorry about that.  I should go clean my house now.

  3. Thanks for the laugh Emily! The pic of the dolls on the sofa is priceless. I think all too often people only see the perfectly styled pics and think it is like that all the time. I love that you are keeping it real. I also loved that you show you can have a perfectly styled home when it needs to be, but it is also a place where your kids can be kids! The two can co-exist.

  4. I enjoyed the tangent, The grapes in the closet, whatever was happening under that pillow, but most of all the view from your lap, all very sweet.

  5. Wow what a refreshing real post! Thanks for sharing. Glad to now know about the drawers being open saving time - that could have been a picture of my daughters room.

  6. Glad you're keeping it real. When I'm taking pictures for my blog, I often cram a bunch of junk in the corner, out of the camera's view. Whatever works and keeps up sane! Your office is divine!

  8. You have a house that is LIVED in. It's wonderful. As for getting projects done, house cleaned...the secret is to throw a party and somehow my hubby finds time to get some stuff done!

  9. Totally agreed. Posts/Images are just a moment in time. Not really real life. I really think people don't understand that at all. I love the real life photos! Thanks for sharing, liz

  10. Yep, this looks like my house. I never assumed that your house was perfect all the time. It couldn't be unless you're secretly a superhero. It's still nice of you to show us your mess.

  11. Being the mother of 3 daughters I only know too well the chaos going on. Naked dolls (Barbie's little shoes are the worst) open dresser drawers and leaving their clothes on the floor. It's part of having a real family and I applaud you for being so honest about it.

  12. So true for all of us! I do love your house and office and STYLE!!!
I always remind myself I will miss the messes, the grapes, and the dolls (or legos) in 10 years when my kids have graduated. Right now is time to embrace them, work around them and hug the ones who do the messes!

  13. Great & funny post today, I actually talked about keeping it real today too and showed off one of my hot messes going on in my spare room! Its so strange to me, I've been blogging and a designer for a few years now and before that I was a paralegal for a very long time so I've primarily always worked with women and sometimes I think I must be wired differently then most women because I never think about asking about things like the light cord or other maybe logical questions I just look at the picture and think wow that's really pretty. With my work I'm all about the details but with others work or others people's homes maybe being a little messy I never look that closely at the small details. I think blogging is hard sometimes our photos need to be beautiful and realistic which isn't the easiest thing to do. Thanks for always keeping it real Emily! (Oh and your daughter is so sweet at your desk!!)

  16. When did you come over to my house and take pictures?! :) Thanks for the great post, it makes me feel normal. And I use tape to hide my electrical cords as well. Works great.

    ReplyDelete
  17. My mom has a brown extension cord that blends in with the floor, you could try one of those pinned to the perimeter, run up the desk leg, and plug both the lamp and laptop in the outlets... That is if this ever bothers you!

  18. I am a new follower :)

It is so refreshing when bloggers post pics of what their homes look like in "real life".

    Thanks for this post

  19. wow- are you sure you arent sharing photos of my life? Well- minus the plastic grapes- I have leggos in my closet-you know in case I want to build something on the fly. Thanks for keeping it real-because we all have to actually "live" in our homes. Great post!

  20. Just keepin' it real! Love it! Laughing so hard at the grapes in the closet, in case you get "pretend hungry." I only have one child right now, and to be honest, on most days (I said most) I love seeing her little "messes" here and there (until she refuses to help clean them up!). It reminds me of how lucky I am to have her, and it keeps us "real." Thanks for sharing!

  21. I love the 'real life' posts that folks are starting to publish, including yours :) It's so easy to get discouraged about your own house when all you see is perfectly styled pictures online. So THANK YOU so much for sharing some reality! Your house is beautiful and I love your sense of style. Keep up the good work!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I usually don't comment on posts, but this was just too awesome! I work and have 2 small boys, and often feel like I just can't keep up with everything! I am always apologizing for my messy house -especially when my mother comes and I get "the look". ha! This post made my day!! Thank you! Heather

  23. Emily.....ain't real life grand. I mean seriously...do people REALLY think that a perfectly styled photograph is real life???? Come on...of course we clean and style for them...[slapping my forehead in dismay]......duh! Your office is fab. I only wish I did not have to share my office with the washer and dryer. Oh the joys of living in a 2200 sq ft home!

    ReplyDelete
  24. love your tangent! thanks for keepin' it real :)

  25. Open drawers...why, why, why? I ask my son, "Is it REALLY that hard to push it in?!" So funny!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ha! I have that 'drawer open' problem, too, but it's my hubby that does it. When I remind him about it, I pretend I'm Vanna White and hum the theme from Wheel of Fortune closing the different drawers.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Love this post! It's SO easy in blog land to think someone has it all together, all the time.. Perfect kids, home, life, etc. a little dose of reality is refreshing.

  28. This may be my favorite post you have ever written. :) I can identify with the plastic grapes in the closet. Except I think my closet features an orphaned white kid's glove, a big purple bouncy ball, and a random doll in the corner.

  29. Oh, thank you so much for this post, Emily! I love real life pictures and knowing that most of us don't live in our cleaned-up photos.

Thanks for keeping it real. I can relate to so much of it, especially the opened drawers, random toys and kid art scattered about.

Your office, cord, messy desk and all, is stunning!

Thanks for sharing and making the rest of us feel better ; )

  30. You are so funny, Emily! The grape photo/comment was the best. Your office is absolutely gorgeous and I am so impressed with your styled photo! And I love seeing the behind-the-scenese as well. You should see our house today...I am taking a vacation day to paint our living room and I didn't bother picking up the scattered toys before I did that!

  31. Your home office is beautiful ...styled and unstyled!

  32. My daughter is grown and on her own, and when she comes over she says, "wow the house is clean", and I say, "no still not clean, just picked up because no one is ever here, check our home offices they are still messy,". Enjoy the mess and these times, a good friend once told me, your daughter won't remember the mess, but she will remember that you stopped to read to her.

Your blog totally made me smile. Love your blog, read it daily.

    Thanks for the smile.

  34. Thank you...this made my house look so much more normal too :). While it can be spotless...it doesn't tend to last long... more often you will see plastic food on our floor and trucks in random places ;). But such is life.

  35. Love your transparency! Thank you. You will be rewarded for your honesty.

  36. LOVE the rug and vintage chairs!! As a home stager I get that all the time....I bet your house is beautiful. I tell my clients not only are there bare spots on my walls and empty spots where there used to be furniture(we do vacant house stagings and sometimes if the budget is tight I must go shopping in my own house:)we also LIVE in our house just like they do theirs. We don't live in staged houses we SELL them:) Great post Emily and I love your humor and honesty!!

  37. Great post!! Thanks for keeping it real and keeping us entertained. Your home is still gorgeous with all of those beautiful patterns and colors even with dolls under the pillows! haha Your home office really is one of the prettiest ever.

  38. Believe it or not, this will probably end up being one of your most popular posts ever. People love to see that you have a real and messy life. My favorite are the grapes in the closet. :)

  39. Once on a warm Spring evening we went straight outside after dinner rather than cleaning up the kitchen. Of course, a friend stopped by, and as I was apologizing for the mess he said "That's ok, we ate dinner in our kitchen tonight too." I've always appreciated that gracious answer. "Real" life is the best!

  40. LOVE IT! The under-the-pillow doll party is my favorite. From where I sit, I can see one of my family room side tables which is currently housing an empty popcorn tin, a bag of Christmas ornaments that needs to go to the thrift store, a Lenten penny bank, a box of felt ornament patterns, and a sewing box. And like your coffee table -- it's very small! (And that also explains why I refuse to have a coffee table.)

  48. This is one of my favorite posts of yours! Awesome. I love the untouched up details to show every once in a while. I am not good at styling so most of the time my photos aren't well styled though it is a little cleaned up, of course. Thanks for the tangent and for showing reality.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I love your styled pictures and the real ones. My 3 kids are teenagers and I miss the days of plastic grapes and finding dolls under the pillows. There are still messes but I think the important thing is enjoy your house at every stage because one day we will have an empty nest. Great article!

  61. I LOVE this!

I only have one four month old, but my house is always a disaster. I appologize, but I like to say- a messy house = happy kids. I realized I would rather spend 15 more minutes with my son rather than organize the mail that is on the kitchen table!

Thanks for making me feel that this is ok, and that I am not the only one that feels this way.

P.S. You are so lucky to be able to work from home. I wish that I could just bite the bullet and do it!

  62. Comforting post to see and hear! I tried, at the end of the day, to pick up. Did that throughout rearing three children and now that I'm taking care of my youngest grandchild 2 days/week, we just leave his things around as we miss him so much when he's not here! Having his stuff out is comforting!

  64. I love that you did this post. Makes me feel so much better... I really go back and forth with this in sharing on my own blog. And it's funny that I appreciate candor and honesty and authenticity when I read another's. Can I really take a photo of a project in process or before the bookcase is totally "styled"? I may have been emboldened to take a different approach.

  71. Love this post! Every time I read a design blog that showcases the blogger/designers own home I ALWAYS wonder how they keep it up so perfectly when they have children/husbands/busy careers/successful blogs. I always end up feeling so guilty because my home is a wreck and I don’t even have kids yet (just a hubby, 2 dogs and a full time career.) I feel like such a slacker because I still haven’t painted the guest room or emptied the boxes I threw in the closet when we bought our house (a year and half ago.) So how completely refreshing to read this post! I love glimpses into my favorite bloggers “real” lives! Thank you for sharing this not always glamorous and photo appropriate side of your life. It helps knowing that we’re all in the same boat, just trying to put on enough makeup to be presentable, put enough food on the table for the hungry mouths and living our lives the best way we can – even if that means our homes aren’t Magazine ready every second of the day!

  73. Keepin' it real! I love it! It's so true, though! I completely stage my home before photos. In a perfect world, that's how I would always want it to look. But, then reality steps in! :) I adore the new office! :)

  74. ah. I'm supposed to be finding the island in the kitchen as I type...

  75. Love it! Thanks for sharing. I DID pin your office pics when you posted them, so this especially made me laugh. BTW, we added french doors to our office (which is located off our entry, like yours) when we decided we needed a bit more quiet for working. It still allows us to see what is going on, and it still feels open and bright, but I like having the option of closing the doors if I need to for a phone conversation...just a thought as you are about to add two more littles to your home! Your space is lovely!

  78. You know, I think what is nice though, (since most of us who follow design blogs love good design) isn't the "mess", or real life, kind of ok because the setting is nice design? The "mess", then somehow doesn't seem so bad. Because life will always happen. For example, I like seeing clothes spilling out of a cool grey dresser rather than a drab boring one! Just a thought!

  79. Thanks for keeping it real Emily!

It's easy to feel discouraged about your own home when all you see are the perfectly styled "afters". "How can I ever hope to live up to that standard?", etc..

It's great to see what these beautiful spaces look like day in and day out as they are lived in. At any given moment, my living room looks like a doggie daycare with pet beds and dog toys littering the floors.

Thanks for the reminder that there is often more to the picture than meets the eye! :)

P.S. the dolls under the pillows = hilarous!

  81. I LOVED this post! Thank you for sharing your real life with us. As a mom of a 2 year old and 7 month old, I can relate to so much of this (except for the beautifully decorated home - I'm still working on that part!). The dolls were my favorite, as there are currently 3 naked dolls strewn across my living room rug. And the photo of your daughter while you blog. Loved that one - my son is on my lap as I type!

  89. Oh my gosh, I am laughing so hard! That was my life years ago, mess on the coffee table, strange things under the pillows, stray toys in my closet. Funny thing, now that my girls are in college and I am *suppose* to have the time to keep things neat and tidy, it's still not happening!

I still have a pink Barbie shoe on my kitchen window sill. I like to keep it there just to remind me of the crazy fun days...

  91. I love this post. Lately, what's attracted me most about rooms I see online or in magazines is that they are uncluttered and clean, in contrast to the rooms in my life. It is refreshing to see that the same (mostly kid related here, too) clutter is in beautiful rooms, the same cords are stretched across floors in beautiful rooms, etc., and that it's all just a work in progress for everyone. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  92. Everything looks amazing! Another idea for hiding the cords for lamp, etc. is I use 3M command hooks underneath the desk top, down the legs, etc. Another good option for keeping cords contained!

    Love your blog!

    ReplyDelete
  93. This post came at a most coincidental time.... I just happened to 'photoshop' a cord out of the photos for my blog last night and thought... firstly Im really lucky I can do this and know photoshop, then secondly am I misleading readers to thinking my house is always perfect like this, well it's not either but at least you know it can look really great for 5 minutes. I style it and then get all the kids out of the way take the shots then it's like... Ok you can go back now and within 5 minutes there's stuff everywhere! Thanks for the 'real' great post!

    ReplyDelete
  94. Emily, Love your honesty and your real life looks pretty amazing to me!! Keeping it real is always the best policy. When we don't we put ourselves in a box that sometimes we can never get out of, not a good place to be. Keep doing what you are doing Very WELL my dear, Kathysue

  100. You're so good Emily. And I'm still dreaming about your office space - "done" or "undone". I can appreciate a beautifully styled space but I usually assume that it has been styled for a photo and that's perfectly okay in my book. I still believe that a home can be beautiful for anyone and that's what you've shown us in your post.

  101. Great post! Those very same plastic grapes show up in various locations at my house too, glad to know, I'm not alone!

  102. I love it! Thank you! I can live with the random messes and actually appreciate the laughs some of them give me (the dolls under the pillow and the grapes in the closet look very familiar!), but I just can't handle open drawers. I just can't. And I bet there are at least 5 in this house that are open right now! Thanks again!

  103. Love this. It's fun to see others' random kid droppings. My very favorite pics are those that are both styled and real-life--like the beautiful coffee table with a toy on the floor next to it.

  106. Just catching up on my blog reading---and I have to say, I love it! You are human and all of our houses look like that (at least mine does!). And I don't even have children yet. Haha. I loved the dolls in the sofa. Too funny. Thanks for posting.

  107. Thank you so much for your honestly about what your house often looks like! I read blogs and then look at my own house and get so depressed that there are always toys here and there, pillows not where they belong, random articles of clothing scattered, etc! It's so refreshing to know photos are usually "staged" and that others have {organized} chaos like we do!

  108. this is great--truly, this is why your site is my top design blog, and really, the one that first caught my eye 2 blog-designs-ago.

you're so comfortable with yourself and your life. God has gifted you with a great eye, a good sense of humor, and you don't take it or yourself too seriously. perfect!

the balance is so endearing, and i love you for it!

  109. I love it! I can completely relate...with 4 kids no room in the house is a sanctuary! I've been under the weather and my husband just ran and unloaded the dishwasher 3 TIMES in a few hours...yes, real life is a mess!

  110. Oh, how happy you make me. Although your house on its worst day is probably still 100 times more attractive than my apartment on its most immaculate, it is nice to know that no house is as perfect as it seems in pictures.

  117. You are not alone and I am sure you have gathered that by now with all the comments. It is better to come across as "real" - with kids, day-to-day life activities, work-life-family balance pressures and so on. Thank you, Emily!
