Am I the only one who feels like those excited homeowners on Trading Spaces when you open a new can of paint? The paint color reveal when they opened the lids was always one of my favorite parts of the show. . .
So, I opened the quart of Castile (by Olympic) that I bought earlier this week and started slapping samples on our bedroom walls before my husband got home from work.
The first picture is right after I painted it, and it was definitely more blue than I expected. The second picture shows it an hour later, after it dried a little darker. I’m still undecided. Our bedroom is a pretty big room, so it’s going to be a lot of blue. All or nothing, I suppose.
The thing that scares me most? My husband actually noticed the color when he got home. (This doesn’t happen often.) His reaction? “Whooo, that’s blue!” Uh-oh. Then he followed it with the disclaimer he always makes. “But, you know best. Whatever you think.” Yep, that’s why it works :)
Have a great weekend. And, don’t hold your breath for a blue bedroom grand reveal on Monday. You know I could have these swatches on my wall until Summer.
I love that color! It is always amazing how different a paint looks when it dries. I love it when my husband says those words! Have fun painting... can't wait for the reveal!

ReplyDeleteI like it! Especially after it dried... And btw, when we were on TS, we actually helped choose the color, so it wasn't a surprise (altho we made it look like it was) when we saw the can opened. Hee hee! :)
ReplyDeleteThat would be my hubby too! LOL I love the color, but can see why you would take a step back after painting the samples...it is bold and a big change from the color you have now. I am not afraid of color. If I can when going with something bold, I paint one wall and live with it for a day or so in all different lights. If after that I am not loving it on one wall, then I KNOW I am not going to love the whole room painted in it!

ReplyDeleteLike the soap, that color is bold and beautiful! I understand your hesitation, but if you don't use it in your bedroom, i would be finding another room for it. It would be a gorgeous powder room color.

ReplyDeleteMaybe if you went back a shade you can get a dried version of the wet paint color? It's a beautiful color but in a big room, it might be more than you were wanting. Look at the blue color at night, when your more likely to be in the bedroom and get cozy with it.
ReplyDeleteAfter having just painted over a rich color in my den/dining room I liked but still felt it was too bold, I wish I had waited a little bit of time before I painted originally.

Sigh. So many times I love the color just as it appears in the opened paint can. How to get it to stay that same color once it's painted on the wall and then dried. Do I buy it three shades lighter? Blue seems especially hard!

Did it get a little darker with a second coat? Im about to paint my shore bedroom a similar shade but Im darkening it down a bit. Hopefully it will kill the smurf :)

ReplyDeleteIn the can it's absolutely gorgeous. It is a lot of blue but I think with your styling it will be very striking. Maybe you could paint a bigger sample and live with it for a while, but I think it's really pretty.
ReplyDeleteIt is dark, rich and pretty. Not sure what look you are going for, it seems to have a green/teal base to it on my monitor. I love a dark blue room, but navy is a hard color to get right, so many are green or purple based. You have impeccable taste so I know you will love it when you are done. I had a true navy room with all white trim and furniture for one of my son's and it is still one of my favorite rooms I designed for my boys. ReplyDeleteBlue, especially dark smokey ones are perfect for Master bedrooms and a man's study. It is enveloping and soothing. I would swap the white trim for a smokey gray and then paint the ceiling a perfect light sky blue. Feel it? So beautiful! Enjoy.

ReplyDeleteYour husband sounds like mine... "you know best" when it comes to decorating. I am in LOVE with this teal blue color. I painted our dining room this color last year and still smile each time I walk though!

ReplyDeleteThat room will be so warm and inviting... I did my kitchen in a dark blue and love it. My MBR was formally eggplant and when I lighted the walls years later, I missed that cozy warm feeling... GO FOR IT!

My husband says the same thing after an initial slightly negative reaction :) If it makes you feel better, he said the same thing when I painted our office bookshelves almost the exact same color you chose! Now he really likes it.

Hey Em, at least y'all are UK fans, right?! That probably just made your decision to NOT use it! :) It's a gorgeous shade of peacock blue. Love Castille. I just used it in the back of some bookcases!

ReplyDeleteI adore this color and I just, as in three days ago, spray-painted the bases of two bedroom mariposa lamps in this color. I'm going to line the lampshades in gold metallic foil next. It is a rich, moody, dreamy color and reminds us of our trip to Crete. I have never seen such beautiful water as in Crete. This color is happy with greens, golds, grays with pops of raspberry.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that color. It looks very similar to the blue Kate @ Centsational Girl used in the back of her billy bookcases in her bonus room. I'm thinking of using a similar shade on the focal wall in my daughter's bedroom behind a painting similar to the ones Jane Coslick uses in her Tybee Island homes, and then maybe doing 25-50% of the formula on the other 3 walls. Would love to see how it turns out. BTW, had seen Young House Love suggested the low VOC Olympic paint, and was in Lowe's over the weekend, and they sell zero VOC paint in a Valspar+ brand.
