Want to see a peek of what we spent way too many hours doing this past weekend?
We moved the dresser (that was in the foyer blocking that annoying vent) to our family room. I couldn’t look at that other ugly console for one more minute. Problem was, we’re using our “biggest” TV now, and the components (which we also have more of now) won’t fit on top like they did in our last house:
I love TV, but I detest cords and cable boxes. Why can’t everything just work and be pretty, too?
So, my husband spent waaay longer than anticipated fishing cords here and there, drilling holes and removing drawer glides.
We’re not quite finished but everything fits now. I still have to paint the inside of the drawers and possibly add some trim to the shelf fronts.
looks great- it will be beautiful with the finishing touches! Don't you hate when projects take "much, much longer" than expected? It's all worth it though, I guess!

AWESOME! You know you could put the drawer fronts back on the front with hinges to open (like a keyboard drawer on a desk)- when you need to use remotes on the components. Then just close the drawer fronts when you don't need to get to the components. I hate all the cords and clutter too... who invents these multi-thingys? LOL

ReplyDeleteI like the idea of putting the drawer fronts back on with hinges. We have one of those "eyes" invisibly mounted on the tv and fished to the cabinet so that the remote works even with all components out of sight behind wood doors. It costs less than $100. Also, I like your new blog design.

ReplyDeleteI too hate cords and the ugly TV boxes. With Direct TV you can get an RF remote that works through the closed cabinet doors. Now you don't see the ugly boxes in our living room anymore!

ReplyDeleteLooking good! When we were planning our built in bookcases and mantel I made sure to incorporate ways to hide all of our electronics components. I agree - they just really ruin the look/feel of a room for me.

ReplyDeleteIt looks fabulous!!! I hate cords too :( I love what you have done to the wall behind the tv as well, it detracts from the TV. We are in the process or transforming the kids space and I like this idea a ton!

ReplyDeleteOooo, the frames hung around the TV really make it look like it all belongs together! Televisions can be one of the most difficult elements in a room to work with, I think.

ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, this is exactly what I want for my new TV! I am on the hunt right now for a dresser to paint and use just like this. Love taking out the drawers for the "stuff" that drives me crazy too!

Get an RF remote.... You can close the doors to hide ugly components and it works no problem. You destroyed a perfectly good piece of furniture..... And wasted a weekend of your life.

ReplyDeleteI am with you Emily - I hate the cords that come with having a TV and cable box (we also have the xbox hooked up)! This was a great way to fix that problem. The finished product is going to be perfect!

Looks amazing, Emily! I just purchased a buffet that we are turning into a tv console. My husband is actually picking it up as I type this. :) I love the idea of using something unexpected as a tv console.

ReplyDeleteHi - It looks great! One thing I learned about recently was a gadget called a remote control extender. My husband and I bought one from a company called Next Generation on amazon.com. It allowed us to store the components behind closed doors and the remote "sees" through the doors to change the channels. I think it's infrared, but I am no techie... We only bought one, but somehow it works for our cable and DVD player (but I think that has to do with the remote control provided by our cable company). I like so much to not see all of the wires, lights, buzzing gizmos. It was very reasonably priced considering how much more I like the look. :)
