Sleeping in the Dark

Scheming and dreaming about everything I would “like” to get done before the babies come early this summer.  At this point, I’m just doing a lot of thinking out loud.  Want to hear my thoughts?

Today, I have our master bedroom on the brain.  As much as I love a neutral, relaxing bedroom. . . .

I’m also having thoughts of a dark, sleeping “cave” in a deep peacock blue:

As much as I appreciate sleep now, I’m sure it will become even more precious later this year, and this color feels so cozy to me.

I’ve looked at several colors, including “Castille” by Olympic Paint:

And, “Summer Nights” by Benjamin Moore

I like the deep blue best paired with white bedding:

And, gold accessories:

I would also love to include some black and white photography in gold frames:

So, that’s where I am now.  Of course, with my raging pregnancy hormones, I could be back to loving white and bright again by next week. . .

What are your personal feelings about light versus dark bedrooms?

  1. Master bedroom paint colors are on my mind right now, too. I love color and am not afraid to be bold. But I saw this picture on Pinterest of a bedroom and completely fell in love with it and the walls are WHITE! Most people go white and are afraid of color . . . I go colored and am afraid of white. I saw another picture I was instantly drawn to and that room was also white. That tells me I'm on the right track.

I've never had a white room, though, and I'm scared to death of it. How do you pick the right shade? (That's a hint for a blog post, Emily!)

  2. I had a dark blue bedroom for about a year until I just couldn't take the cave feeling anymore. I'm sure it doesn't help that I have 8' ceilings and live in the PNW where it's grey and gloomy a good chunk of the year. I just never could brighten that room back up enough with bedding or accessories. YMMV. I'm sure you'll do a better job of it than I did!!!

  3. I think I am in the minority and gravitate more to the dark side :) I love dark colors. I like the cozy feeling you get from dark colors. I guess light colors always feel less "comfy" to me LOL. I think it also helps that in our house (where I love the dark colors) we also have a bunch of windows and all the ceilings are at least 9 feet.

I LOVE that blue bedroom from Domino. I have that saved and look at it all the time. I would do that in a heartbeat :)

  4. I love a dark bedroom. I have plans to paint mine a dark navy sometime this year.

  5. They are all lovely. I am in the middle of trying to redo my master and really want to use some peacock blue or orange accents. Thanks for the inspiration.

  6. I have a charcoal gray bedroom (with white and turquoise accents) and I LOVE the warmth and cocoon like feeling it has. Dark and dreamy works for me.

  7. I think bedrooms are a good place to try a dark color, since you're in there at night a lot anyway. I say go for it! And then if your pregnancy brain changes its mind again, you can just paint right over it.

  8. It seems like this color has been all over pinterest lately and I'm in love! It's definitely rattling around in my brain when it comes to a master redo. Go for it, Emily!

  9. I love the images of the dark room but since our room doesnt get much naturel light Im pretty sure I would never be able to get out of bed if it was dark and cozy.

  10. Ours was originally dark (an olive gray), but I had to repaint it to a lighter color (almost white)--it felt too dark at times, even with a big window and lots of light. Now the room feels bigger and more serene--which is what I need after a busy day ; ). Plus, I like it so much better with our dark furniture.

  11. I had every plan in the world of painting my bedroom Plumage by Martha Stewart, which is a gorgeous peacock blue. With white bedding and lime green accents. I chickened out, tho. LOL Now I'm going with a lighter aqua blue with white and tan accents. I think it will be soothing and peaceful.

I love a dark bedroom, but I'm not sure I could do an all white one. Seems like it would be awfully bright to me, and I like to sleep in a cave.

  12. I am a light and bright girl. Something about it makes me very happy. But the all white bedroom hasn't happened for me with the twins I have. Good luck on your choices!!

  13. I've had both light and dark bedrooms and I want to say that I preferred the dark. It just seems more cozy and intimate...also harder to get out of bed in the morning though.

  14. When we first purchased our house 11 years ago, I wanted to paint our bedroom a very pale green. My husband pulled out a darker, mossy green and said, "I think we should go with this color." I thought he was crazy, but since we were still within the first year of marriage, I decided to go with it - afterall, it was only paint, right? Fast-forward 11 years and one home addition later - we still have the same dark green color on our walls and we still LOVE it. It is soothing to come into that room after a long day and flop onto the bed (which does currently have a white duvet on it) and unwind. The color sooths and reminds me of green leaves and new growth and everything peaceful. I can't say what would work for you, but I'm all for darker bedrooms (and I never thought I would be that way). Give it a try - after all, it's ONLY PAINT! :-)

  15. YOU KNOW I LOVE DARK!!!! This is funny because I've been contemplating neuburg or newburg green by Benjamin Moore for my bedroom or master bathroom! Have you seen that color? So nice!

  16. I am digging that peacock blue!! Then again I am one of those people who has TONS of color in my home...I mean...I wish I could be a neutral person, I'm just not!

On another note, this totally inspired me because I just picked up a peacock chair from a thrift store and painted it white to sell in my booth...now I'm having visions of painting the peg board next to it....what else...peacock blue!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I love the idea of a dark master bedroom, it feels like you just sink into it! And I love that Benjamin Moore colour--so pretty with gold accents!:)

  18. i am always drawn to the dark moody colors, but in the end i always love a light and airy bedroom!

  19. Beautiful!
I am a cave kind of gal... dark and quiet. I am a long sleeper too - I can easily sleep 12 to 14 hours a night if it's dark. I even use a sleep mask - love that!
I like the mix of the dark walls with the white bedding.... White bedding is perfect to mix and match with other colors or to easily replace if one of the pieces of the sets wears out before the other!
Can't wait to see the finished project... enjoy your nesting cravings too!

  20. I think either would be great. To me it is based on how I want to feel when I walk in my room. Thus, I prefer and use bright, happy colors and because of that they make me feel cozy and makes me smile. If I had a huge bedroom I would probably go darker, because I could still pull in the "happy" with accessories, but the size would the dark walls from feeling cave like.

I have navy in my living room, which I love.

Like someone else said if you change your mind you can always paint over it:)

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think they're both great- but I can TOTALLY see why you'd want a dark restful space with twins on the way! I think the dark is really great when you're looking for something a little different from the rest of the house which can be perfect in a master!

  23. There is no question I love the dark. It's stunning. Not sure I could give up the morning sunlight coming into a light and bright room though. Maybe a mix like your board and batten photo. Light board and batten walls with the rest of the wall and ceiling dark??? Can't wait to see what you do.

  24. I am loving Summer Nights by Benjamin Moore!... Paired with white it would be gorgeous! I think either choice will be fabulous!

  25. I actually used the EXACT blue (walls)...white bedding, curtains...black and white photos, etc. in my bedroom that you are considering! LOVE IT!! I upholstered my headboard with fabric from a bed that I saw on Lonny. I also had pillows made with an ikat fabric that coordinated. It really is a RELAXING room!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I actually used the exact color scheme in my bedroom that you are considering! It is so relaxing!! I found a fabric that I liked in LONNY (and found it at a local fabric store) to cover a headboard. I used white grommet (silver grommets) curtains from Ikea. I found an ikat fabric that I used to cover pillows that has the blue color in it. I have dark wood furniture and a leather sofa that work really well with that color! I carried it into the master bath and used black and white pictures. I made and covered a pelmet box to go over the window (over the tub) with white fabric and used black grogtain ribbon to make a greek key design on it. It REALLY works (the colors) with white!!!

  27. I recently painted one of our bathrooms a similar dark blue. I was thinking the same thing as you, the dark color would be a great contrast to the white vanity and light flooring.

I'm not sure how i feel about it yet (just finished painting on Saturday). When you first approach the bathroom, it screams cave to me. Once I'm inside it doesn't seem so dark. Could just be a lighting issue. Good Luck!

  28. I tried painting our bedroom very light and airy once and it drove me nuts to have so much light inside my bedroom. My bedroom is my sanctuary and as much as I love light and airy, I love the dark walls with white bedding and an accent color in my bedroom. The white is so inviting like a hotel room and the darkness cuddles me in. Our master is currently painted Mocha Accent by Behr and I LOVE it and have had so many compliments on it. You may want to check out the master bedroom at Isabella and Max Rooms. Janelle has her bedroom and bathroom painted so cozy and her bathroom is the deep blue with a textured top.

  32. I think I like lighter bedrooms; maybe that's because I live in an apartment! I'm also pretty sure that my husband wouldn't let me paint anything too dark.

  33. I just painted our master in Blueberry by BM and it is so amazing. It is beyond cosy.

  34. We have a dark bedroom and I love it! The lighting is low and it's very relaxing. My favorite part is the chocolate color drapes that are blackout. I can take a nap during the day when the little one's sleep if we had a long night up.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

  35. I just painted our bedroom Hale Navy a few months ago, we have white bedding and I've been looking for some gold accessories and also coral. I love it! I did end up stenciling one wall this weekend to lighten it up a touch. Good luck choosing and I look forward to seeing what you do with your bedroom!

  37. I love shades of grey in bedrooms either lighter or darker, only because we get so little natural light on our bedroom.

I like you idea of going darker with gold , pretty!

  38. I have always loved dark bedrooms and I will probably always have one. It just feels like nighttime! Our color isn't quite blue but definitely has blue undertones. "Gunmetal" by Benjamin Moore

  39. I love both! I always love coming across a bright, neutral and serene white bedroom.. very calming. But I do like the contrast and masculinity of dark walls in a master. We just painted ours Evening Hush by Behr and have all white bedding. I love it!

  40. I love both for bedrooms; I get pulled in different directions. I gotta say, I like where your head's at! :)
That gorgeous blue paired with the gold accessories would be to die for. And a dark bedroom does feel super cozy and like it's just beckoning you to come in and sleep...which you're going to want to do a lot when you've got two babies...trust me! ;)

  41. Those are some gorgeous colors! I personally like light in my bedroom b/c it's small and I don't want to close it in any more. We have a gorgeous blue (evening symphony by behr) in our living room and I LOVE it still but it seems too dark in the winter when the sun doesn't come out. One thing I do recommend for your bedroom is black out curtains. :) The eclipse kind didn't really work for us (too much light coming through) so I bought a blackout liner at Joann's (it was under $2 a yard) and sewed it to the back of our lined curtains.

  42. I painted out bedroom a dark roasted coffee brown because it was already pretty cave-like with the trees we have in the front of the house, but I have to say after a year of it I am ready to lighten things up. Though relaxing at the end of the day, it is hard to get up in the morning. Now I am looking at a lighter pallette with some pops of colors that I can change with the seasons.

    Good luck!

  43. I used "Summer Nights" in my mail room (this is the only term we could come up with to describe the small alcove in our foyer with a built-in desk where the mail drops in from the slot). I love it so much that I want to paint it in every room!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ohhh--I love your plan of the dark paint color with white bedding and gold accents! Sounds beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Great ideas! I lean toward classic and comfortable with pops of color. I liked the idea of the gray walls with white bedding and pops of the blue in accents!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Go for it! Or at least do blackout liner on your curtains so you can make it dark during the day.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I tend to like darker colors if the room is larger and can handle it, but sometimes darker colors in small rooms make me feel a little claustrophobic. I'm sure, however, that if you'd told me to paint my master navy blue, I would have ended up LOVING it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. I am personally drawn toward lighter spaces. I love to use pastel colors. I think it make a room bright and cheery. Although, I do love a dark room depending on the home.

  49. I love that peacock blue color. And I love the fact that white bedding works in a dark or light setting. And gold accents too for that matter :)

  50. My bedroom is "Totally Teal" by Behr (I think) and I love it. It adds interest to the room and it does feel luxurious and cozy at night. However, there are big windows, high ceilings, and lots of light to make it bright during the day--I don't know if I'd like a dark color in a dark room.

  55. I love peacock blue! I am totally committing to painting my dining room that color! You are right about the gold accessories. I also like a pop of bold green.

  56. My bedroom was Alexandria Beige which is dark and I loved it then I painted it Rainwashed by SW and we love that too. I think you just pick one and in a few years paint another color if you are fickle like me. I like change. I get tired of the same colors. I have actually thought about changing my rain washed to a dark color, so truth be told, i think i like darker for bedrooms. Whatever you do it will be beautiful because I know you and your great style!

  57. Love the dark walls with white bedding, gold accessories. We used Whale Gray by BM in our bedroom. Its a dark blue-ish gray color. We also used gold mirrors and accessories.

  58. 12 years of living in Oregon...say no to the cave! It's much too depressing and with the addition of twins, you want to feel clean, light, airy, uplifted oh ya, and like you are at a spa.
It's too hot in the south for the cave. Wear cave colors, buy a table cloth, throw pillows, but for the big stuff...stay light!

  59. love, love, love where your head is at! I have a dark coca color room "coconut shell" with white and orange/red accents. IT"S SO COZY!! No one ever wants to leave my bed :) ! Good luck in your pregnancy! 5 kids!!

  61. I am typically a neutral girl (well, I have evolved into one)... when we bought our first house 8 years ago, we painted our bedroom first (it was the easiest room to paint, all the rest had 90's wall paper). The color is similar to what you have posted. We have painted and repainted every other room in this house in the 8 years. This is the only color that hasn't changed. I still love it. Its Behr Bayside (its a lot darker in our room, since we get the late afternoon sun in that room). Anyway, yes, I recommend a darker shade of blue.

  62. We once had a brown bedroom. It was the best. :) I love peacock blue.... and the two color swatches you chose.
