Quick Tip for Lightening Up a Dark Kitchen

Did you all catch this kitchen in the newest Better Homes & Gardens?

I, for one, was glad to see a kitchen with dark cabinets featured.  There seems to be few great examples out there for those of us who have perfectly good cabinets and are afraid of painting them.  I liked this easy step for opening things up a bit.  The homeowner removed one of the cabinet doors and used wood putty and stain to cover up the peg holes.  The open area display for white dishes makes things a little brighter without painting the cabinets themselves.

Have a great weekend,

  1. I thought this month's BHG was really great. I've just browsed so far but I'm hoping to jump in some more this weekend - loved what I saw though. And you're right, not many darker cabinets so this is a nice example too. Have a great weekend!

  2. Yes I did, in fact I was just looking at the magazine over lunch - and I immediately started trying to visualize my cabinet without the doors! I think I might be able to make it work on one of them -

  3. I always get mine so late!

Anyway, very glad to see this. I have 3 year old dark cabinets that I can't afford to paint -- plus they match my dark floor. Always looking for ways to lighten things up!

  4. agreed! love the open cabinets, and i agree...need more ideas for how to lighten up kitchens with dark cabinets when they're too "new" to paint!

  5. My kitchen has the same colored cabinets as the home featured... and mine are only 5 years old. I was just thinking that everybody does white and I'm so outta style.. LOL

  7. Thank you, thank you! I loved that in BH&G also. I love my wood cabinets and get so discouraged on blogland because EVERYONE is painting their cabinets nowadays. It is so refreshing to see a great blogger (you're awesome - I read you everyday) who is not conforming.

  9. White kitchens are my favorite, but I'd be petrified to paint over perfectly beautiful wood. This is such a good idea--might as well display pretty dishes!

  13. That's such a good idea! It's true, not every kitchen needs to be light and airy to be beautiful, but this is a good compromise for sure.

  14. I must admit, I DO wish I had some calcutta gold marble or carrara with white cabinets- so clean and fresh, but you gotta sometimes work with what ya got, right? I too have a dark kitchen but tried to lighten it a little with accessories and cabinet knobs if this helps anyone else out there =) Thanks Emily! xo Shelli

  15. Great post! I have darker cabinets. We re-did our kitchen prior to the white cabinet trend. It took me a long time to learn about using white to balance all the dark and give it a more up-to-date look! Thanks for the great perspective!

  17. This looks to be the same color as my kitchen cabinets and I still like them very much, no white can envy at all. Considering how much o envy other stuff Im still happy with my cabinets.

  18. I'm so glad you posted this. I have beautiful, 4 year old dark wood cabinets (very similar to these) that I just can't justify the risk of painting. I would love to see more kitchens like this!

  20. Although I've always been partial to white cabinets (which I don't have in my kitchen) I think it would be somewhat redunant if we ALL had white kitchens. Variety is the spice of life.

  21. Hi Emily!
I too have darker cabinets (hickory) and did something similar to what BHG did. I have wanted to paint my cabinets, but am hesitating b/c I know the quality of the cabinets is good(I also have pretty granite countertops) The look is more open now whith my white dinnerware and has helped quell my desire to paint, paint, paint! That being said, I still might paint, but this is a good alternative in the meantime. Good luck and share pics! :)

  22. BOYCOTT AMERICAN WOMEN
Why American men should boycott American women

    http://boycottamericanwomen.blogspot.com/

I am an American man, and I have decided to boycott American women. In a nutshell, American women are the most likely to cheat on you, to divorce you, to get fat, to steal half of your money in the divorce courts, don't know how to cook or clean, don't want to have children, etc. Therefore, what intelligent man would want to get involved with American women?

American women are generally immature, selfish, extremely arrogant and self-centered, mentally unstable, irresponsible, and highly unchaste. The behavior of most American women is utterly disgusting, to say the least.

This blog is my attempt to explain why I feel American women are inferior to foreign women (non-American women), and why American men should boycott American women, and date/marry only foreign (non-American) women.

Tens of millions of American men have had their lives completely destroyed by American women through the following crimes:

    1. False rape accusations (it has been proven that up to 80 percent of rape accusations are FALSE)

    2. False domestic violence (DV) charges (same as above)

    3. Financial destruction of men in divorce courts through alimony and support payments (women get up to 95 percent of their ex-husband's income and savings, as well as the house, car, etc)

    4. Emotional destruction of men by ex-wives who have stolen their children from them and forbidden contact

    5. Divorced dads who commit suicide as a result

Not one single American woman has EVER condemned their fellow American women for committing these crimes against men. Silence means consent. Therefore, American women support and enjoy destroying men's lives and causing men to commit suicide. Apparently, American women think it is okay to be a criminal, just as long as you are a woman. Therefore, is it any surprise that a huge percent of American men no longer want anything to do with American women, other than using them for easy sex and then throwing them away?

Over 50 percent of American women are single, without a boyfriend or husband; so the fact is most American men no longer want to marry American women. Let these worthless American women grow old living alone with their 10 cats.

    BOYCOTT AMERICAN WOMEN!

A national morning radio show talked about the Boycott American Women blog and was heard by millions of people.

  25. yeah. love that article in BHG. We actually own the same wood tone cabinets in builder grade style. After 3 years of living here, I too felt like it was kind of dark so I found out the cabinet brand and ordered a couple glass door fronts then filled those cabinets with all my white dish collection. It was magic, everyone comes in comments on how great it looks. We're on the very slow way to transforming our builder grade kitchen. Great post.

  26. So glad to hear I'm not the only one who doesn't want to cover my kitchen cabinets with paint. I do like the idea to lighten up without the use of a paint brush.

  27. I agree with the cabinets. I love both white and wood, I go back and forth. But if you are to believe every magazine out there, we live in a country where only white cabinets exist! It was nice to see this for a change. Wood has a warmth that white can never achieve (but I'd still like white after all my years with wood!)

  28. Contrary to what everyone seems to think....every kitchen does not have to be white! I love what Lauren did to her kitchen to make it special. "Use what you have".....will make you think harder...on how to accessorize something!
