Our Living Room: Slipcovered Chairs

You may remember that one of our first purchases for our new home was a pair of slipcovered chairs for our family room.  I wanted white chairs, so slipcovers were the only feasible option.  I had never owned anything slipcovered in my life and to be honest, it was a look that had to grow on me.  Since I’ve had them for a few months now, I thought I would give you my two cents on the ones we chose.

I knew I wanted a basic style and quickly narrowed it down to the IKEA Ektorp armchair and the Pottery Barn Basic Armchair, which is basically a twin to the Ektorp (except for the price tag).EKTORP Chair cover, Blekinge white

My husband and I set out on a chair shopping trip, and of course, he was very enthusiastic about the price of the IKEA version:

He might be all smiles here, but when I reminded him that this would be the chair that his bottom would be sitting in for the entirety of the Kentucky basketball season, he suddenly realized it wasn’t all that comfortable.

In the end, we opted for the Pottery Barn chairs.  I upgraded to the down-filled cushion (so we could “sink in” a little).

They didn’t stay super-white for long.  You see, around here, we like to draw with marker all over our fingers and then rub them on the whitest pieces of furniture in the house.  Oh, and we also like to put our dirty tennis shoes in the chairs.  And, sometimes—just for kicks—we also eat Cheetos, lick our fingers and then rub them on the chairs.  (None of this makes me crazy in the least bit.  Can you tell?!)

I waited as long as possible, but after three good months of abuse, it was time to take the slipcovers off for the first time and put them in the washing machine.  Pottery Barn’s instructions say to use a commercial washer, but I asked others on Twitter and they all said their own washers work just fine.

So, I put my two-year-old to work:

The good news is that the chair cushions are tons of fun to play on while the slipcovers are washing. . .

I put them back on while they were slightly damp and the wrinkles fell right out on their own.  So easy, I may wash them again before three more months pass.

Overall, I’m a happy camper and based on comfort, I’m glad we splurged for the Pottery Barn ones.  (Although, if I were putting these in a spot where we didn’t sit on a regular basis, I would most definitely choose the IKEA style for the price.)

On another subject, some of you have asked about the jute rug I purchased back in August.  I’m happy to report that it is holding up extremely well and has soaked up several spills with no problems.  More details here.

  2. Awww those pics are so cute! The chair looks great, I really like it-and I love how practical the slipcover makes it. I LOVE the black and white pillow, so pretty!

  3. I LOVE, love, love, love my PB slipcovered couch. It gets severe abuse around here and has held up to repeated washing beautifully. Couldn't be happier.

I recently visited Ikea for the first time ever and was convinced we'd be bringing home their slipcovered couch. I was sooo bummed when we saw it in person :( I definitely don't think they would hold up to repeated use. Needless to say, we went home empty handed.

  4. Thanks for the review! Love the look of white slipcovers. I wish PB would come up with a slipcovered wingback dining chair. I'm on the hunt for those, and I was concerned about the washability. Sounds like yours came out of the wash just great.

  5. 100% agree and I've had both. When it came time to buy a new slipcover for our PB Basic sofa, it was cheaper to buy the Ikea ektorp altogether (albeit, in hindsight not very green...but the PB sofa was Worn. Out.). And it moved to where we don't sit on it very much. I still have the PB chair and have gone through a few slipcovers (over 12 years)....always from ebay!

  6. Love this review - it's so great to hear about how products hold up in a real home with an active family! I've been looking into jute rugs lately and I think I'm going to go with a similar one to yours (the jute/chenille blend) but from west elm. I'm glad to hear it's working out for you!

  7. Sounds like you made the right choice and so glad it was easy to watch. Extra plus that the cushions are fun to play with. I wish I were pint size again so I could curl up just like her on the chair!

  8. I have a question about washing/drying the slipcover. I would imagine you can only wash it in cold water, right? And can it be put in the dryer?
I've had to replace slipcovers for my couch because of shrinkage. Was that a problem with your cover?

  9. What is it about loose cushions that triggers "Kids Gone Wild"? I pulled all the slipcovers off my furniture in the basement to wash them, and came downstairs to a series of forts and trampolines. But you gotta love the washability factor. Yours look great!

  10. I have an Ektorp loveseat in our games room, which is used occasionally and it is OK. But I agree, you want comfort and your choice sounds best! Ektorp does come with a 10 yr warranty, which I was surprised at but I find the Ikea zippers on Ikea slipcovers fall apart and I end up stitching in better ones, you get what you pay for!

Love the pillow on the chair - source???

  11. I've had white slipcovers for about 10 years (some I've made, and the Ektorp ones) and can't imagine living without them. Spaghetti sauce, chinese sweet & sour sauce, dog puke - everything washes out beautifully. I'm dying to get my slipcover made for our new linen sofa and my 2 leather club chairs - it just suits our lifestyle and I love the fresh look :)

  12. Barbara--the pillows are from House of Pemberley; not sure if they're listed on her site but she takes custom orders: http://www.etsy.com/shop/houseofpemberley?ref=si_shop

Mary--I did wash them on cold and put them in the dryer on low for about 30 minutes. I think pulling them out while they're still slightly damp prevents shrinking. I didn't have any problems with that, although I was nervous about it.

  13. I have those chairs slip-covered in red (plus the ottoman, that I LOVE) and the sun has done a number on them!

I'm dying to buy the white to replace the red :)

  14. Ahh our lives parallel! I just took my WHITE slipcovers off to wash yesterday and they turned out AWESOME. I was holding my breath! ON a side note, thinking of ordering some cute new slipcovers for my Ikea parsons chairs. Have you ever tried Bemz.com? Love their ikea slipcovers!

  16. I have a PB Comfort sofa and the Ektorp chairs. Although the chairs don't get much use and are comfortable enough, I must say the PB slipcover is 1000 times easier to put back on. I kind of dread washing the chair slipcovers because of how difficult it is to get them back on.

  17. I went down that same road a few years ago... except I bought Norwalk instead of Pottery Barn. Looks identical to your beautiful chairs and I just can't imagine why I waited so long now!

Unfortunately, I did not buy two chairs (hind sight is 20-20) I bout a sofa and chair. Love the sofa but wish the two chairs in the LR matched now. Gotta work on that!

    VERY ADORABLE PHOTOS!!!

Thank you so much for sharing...

  18. I had the Ektorp sofa and chairs, the chairs stayed in the family room but finally had to move the sofa to a less used room. I was washing that slipcover every two weeks with 4 kids and two dogs, I just couldn't handle the dirty looking cover. I still like my chairs and they don't seem to get as dirty. I'm going to try dying my sofa cover gray and if I screw it up, oh well. Glad to hear about the rug holding up, I am looking for one. Thanks for the review!

  19. We have the ektorp chair and I love it! It's one of our most-used seats and I think it's super comfortable! (but maybe that says more about the other seats in our house :) It has also stood up to lots of abuse over the last year and a half. Thanks for the tips on washing the slip cover too.

  20. We just purchased 2 ektorp couches for the living room with white slips. Definitely got the cheetos on them already...but I'm taking deep breaths :) They're not as deep as I might have liked, but for this point in our lives...I just want to make it through both boys' toddler years...and then we'll probably get grown up couches :)

  21. Emily I am so glad you did this post, we have been looking at the Ikea chair as an option, but not to sit in all the time. You have proven to me that white can be a good thing. Did you spot before washing them? Do you use bleach? I know lots of questions. I am going to bookmark this post for future reference and too answer the ??? about white and slips, Happy New Year, Kathysue

  23. Hey Kathysue, I sprayed some of the marker spots with Shout before I washed them but didn't use any bleach. I was surprised how well everything came out.

  24. Love the pictures! I have the PB basic chair as well and the Ikea Ektorp chair slipcover works on the PB chair! And the white is only $29!! I compared the sizes of the two chairs and the difference is only 1-2 inches. Once on you can't even tell!! It's a great alternative for replacement slipcovers.

    Cheers!

  25. Thanks for the input on the slip covered chairs. I am thinking about the white ektorp one from ikea as we don't have the pottery barn here in Australia. Good to hear no one has had real problems with washing and getting the stains out because I was a bit worried about white, thanks!

  26. I love the black and white pillow - would you mind sharing where you got it? Thanks!

  27. Very good to know and glad you are enjoying them. I think a few of these might be in our future but my husband is not on board with the white idea. I have lots of convincing to do!

  28. Did you take that picture of the white chair at my house? I can so relate...Glad to know the PB chairs hold up well. Your sweet little bean sure seems to think they're comfortable. I can see her feeding one of the babies in that chair! Hope you are feeling well.

  29. A PB sectional is on my dream list. :-) For now, I have an Ektorp couch from Ikea. I've had it since April 2009 and after almost 3 years of continual use (even being slept on several times by younger siblings, guests, etc.) I can honestly say it's holding up very nicely. We even used to let the dogs on the couch and the stains have washed out! (Some took some Shout/Bleach action, which is against the rules according to the washing label, but it's held up well.) I would like to add that although the couch is uncomfortable in the show room, once it's worn in, it is super comfy. I don't like a couch that eats me, though, so maybe it's a matter of opinion pertaining to firmness? Regardless, it's nice to hear the awesome review of the PB chair! :-)

  30. Love this post!! I have the Ektorp chair and sofa and paid $80 total for both covers. I love them! Some people think I'm nuts for having white upholstery with two boys, but I just wash them when the spills and fingerprints make me crazy. I totally agree with leaving them a damp to keep the wrinkles out. I've also found that letting them air dry keeps them from shrinking and are so much easier to put on.

  31. As much as I love Ikea, their upholstered furniture is NOT comfortable! That's one thing I NEVER buy there.

  33. 3 months!!!! I have to wash mine more like every month!!! No kids but the dogs can do a number on them for sure. Glad you upgraded to the PB chairs. It is always good to use the best you can afford when you are going to sit in it everyday. I do have different slipcovers for the winter just to give me a break :)
