I’ve been studying this picture from the latest Lonny ever since it caught my eye a week or so ago. It feels so layered (notice—I said “layered”, not “cluttered”), and I love the mix of gold, black and texture.
One of the easiest ways to add texture to a room is by using inexpensive bamboo shades. (This apartment owner added the ribbon trim herself. This little project is on my “to do” list for our living room.)
What I love about bamboo shades besides giving rooms another layer of texture, is that they can work in casual and dressy spaces, alone or under other window treatments.

I used them throughout our last home under curtain panels. I didn’t depend on them for privacy (they are more light-filtering than anything), but pulled the curtains instead.
In our dining and living rooms, I used these shades from JCPenney. They come in different colors and were pretty substantial.

In the other rooms, we used these inexpensive flatstick shades from Home Depot. They were thin, but great if you’re just wanting the layered look. I was also able to dress some of our wider windows for little money. (I had to order the wider widths online.)

ReplyDeleteI love the texture bamboo blinds gives to rooms too. Overstock.com is a great source for blinds. They have many different colors and tons of sizes. Can't beat their shipping price either! I ordered bamboo blinds for my entire first floor from Overstock and have been very pleased with the product. I recommend my clients purchase them from Overstock often.

ReplyDeleteI love bamboo shades! I have them in our bedroom, paired with gauzy white drapery panels, and they make me feel like I'm somewhere tropical. That's very important when it's -3 outside :)

ReplyDeleteEmily - perfectly timed! I was pondering this for my living room -the whole added texture thing. I think the classiest of rooms have them and it makes the space a bit more grounded. but im so worried it will look as cheap as they are. no one else's do, so i should just trust that. i acutally really like the HD ones better... but that tortoisey look the JCP ones give off is super cool to.

I love, love, love bamboo shades. I added them thorough out our house and it made SUCH a difference. The best is that they're so affordable. We picked ours up at Lowes. Wish I would have gotten rid of the wide wood blinds a long time ago :)
ReplyDeleteThese pictures are so beautiful. I just did a little redo of our breakfast room and I am trying to find the right bamboo shades. It's a huge window, like 108", so I'd love to find one that large but may have to hang several smaller ones together. Trying to keep my choice budget friendly! I bought all of our bamboo shades from Home Depot. They look great and are less than half the price of custom!
ReplyDeleteLove that blue room by Lynn Morgan! Bamboo blinds are wonderful, I think. I've purchased all of ours from Kmart, then lined them with black out lining from Joanns. They are definitely light-blocking rather than light-filtering, but we keep them up most of the time. And they are easy to raise and lower.

That kitchen is one of my absolute favorites. I recently ordered one from Overstock for our odd-sized kitchen window based on the photo -- I love how it's hung higher than the window with some molding across the top to make it look deliberate.

ReplyDeleteI did them in our first house under the panels and always loved them. Two houses later, I still do. I am debating on doing them in my family room where I cannot do drapes due to bookcases. Here is my question, over or under the transom windows? The room is darker due to the screened in porch being behind the windows and the living room french doors are opposite.
ReplyDeleteI just love the look of the bamboo blinds. We paired them with IKEA Vivan sheer white panels in our previous home's front room. It just really dressed up the whole space. The only downfall, as you mentioned, is they don't really provide much privacy. We thought they would and were bummed at first.

ReplyDeleteI agree, they add great warmth to a room. Like you said, most don't provide privacy though, as I learned with my matchstick blinds from Ikea! I do prefer the bamboo style.

I ordered rustic bamboo shades for every window in my house and garage from overstock.com for about $700. And I love them. They were super easy to install.
ReplyDeleteWe have them in most rooms in our house. Love the color and texture. They were purchased from Lowes and are made by Levalor. Plus, they are available lined. We use the lined ones for the front rooms of the house and unlined elsewhere.

ReplyDeleteOk, this is kinda random, but I think it is interesting how in the cottage living kitchen pic, there are actually THREE different colors in the cabinetry.....white on top, black surrounding and then the island is a pretty stain that matches the bamboo...I would NEVER have been able to picture this....and would probably cringe at the thought, but somehow it works! I saved this pic to show our carpenter, bc we have a really small island and I wanna see if he can build it out a little like the one is this picture so that it makes it a little more useable with some stools underneath....ps- you know how we love natural light but also love to have things like the bamboo blinds and curtain panels to make it dark when we want it...like that early morning sun when we are sleeping in (whats that right? lol) ...well, my entire house has transom windows and while I love them....I feel like I shouldn't do bamboo shades because it covers their beauty....do you have thoughts on that? ReplyDeleteaaaaand I just saw the comments on the transom windows....I have plantation shutters under the transoms so I guess I should just leave it...but I don't have the plantations shutters on the breakfast nook windows, but then if I do the bamboos there my hubs will say I covered up the view of the TN hills....UGH. Somehow I never waver in my thoughts on other peoples homes but when designing my own I am a big 'ol hot mess. *sigh*

ReplyDelete10 years ago when I was a newlywed, new home owner (aka BROKE), I bought faux bamboo blinds at K-Mart. I loved them so much that I took them with us when we moved. They started fading a couple years ago, so I just lightly sanded and re-stained them. I had no idea that cheap window treatments from K-Mart would last me this long, but they have, and I love them!
