 and Then:

What makes me cringe when I look back:

It is so funny because back when we lived in this apartment I thought that I was a good designer. I had just started design school and I thought I knew it all. Wow. I was so stuck on the "utah style of decorating". Fake plants, dark furniture, red and tan accents. What really makes me cringe is how "typical" my home looked. It had absolutely nothing unique or special about it.

What I love most about my house now:

My home now is completely me! I have finally found my style and it is wonderful. My home is colorful, fun and unique.

The biggest influence on my evolving style has been:

I have to say blogs, work experience and my design degree have been the biggest influence on my style. Blogs opened my eyes to a whole different world of design. I started to see how people were taking risks in their homes. I remember the first blog post I ever saw about white kitchen cabinets and I thought it was crazy! No one in Utah had white cabinets. Everyone had dark wood in their homes. I think it's natural for people's styles to evolve so my advice would be, don't buy furniture for a few years after you get married. Buy used and save the new furniture for after you have a better defined style. My bed and futon were big purchases that now I regret. Give yourself time to evolve and be patient with your home. It will all come together eventually!

Thanks, Kirsten!  I think this post makes us all feel better :)  See more of her home & design ideas here.

Lots of Pink with a Little Green: A Little Girl's Bedroom

Today, I'm sharing pictures of my friend Katie's four-year-old daughter's room.  Although she says that it's not quite complete, I insisted that it was "blog-worthy" last time I was at her house.  (Besides, I know you love to see real people's spaces as much as I do!)

This is how the room started:

[100_3824.JPG]

Her first purchase was this cute Pottery Barn bedding, but she wanted the room to have a little punch.

And, after 1 1/2 years worth of tweaks and changes:

The whole room was done on a pretty tight budget.  The headboards, desk and mirror were all second-hand finds that just needed some fresh paint.  She ordered the pom-pom pillows from Pottery Barn Teen and we had them monogrammed in a clean, simple font.

She stenciled the entire wall behind the beds, using a template she found online.  (You can find a similar one here.)

She put her little girl's first birthday dress on display wrapping the back of an old frame with fabric and painting the frame. The lamps were a HomeGoods purchase (we added the ribbon trim to match the green desk).

Since the room wasn't wired for overhead lighting, she bought a pack of these inexpensive Lilly Pulitzer pom-poms and hung one from the ceiling.

Thanks to Katie and her sweet girl for letting me share her 99% finished space!

Moving On. . . We Have a New House!

Yes, I know I'm full of all kinds of news lately.  This is more personal than last week's Better Homes & Gardens news, but I still wanted to share with you.  While I've been busy blogging and working away, the last few months have been pretty eventful for our family behind the scenes.  I may share the long version eventually, but for now, I won't bore you with the details.

So, yes, we have moved!  We found a house that we fell in love with, in the perfect spot, a couple of months ago.  We took a huge leap of faith and decided to buy it.  My husband and I both felt strongly that this was where God wanted us, so we did it. . .

I've always believed in the power of prayer, but I can't say that I've ever seen God answer my prayers more specifically than He did in this situation.  Again, to write all of the details might require several posts, but here's the short story:  Within a seven-day period, we received an offer on our house (as we were moving some furniture out), and received a signed contract on the same day of the BH&G photo shoot.  (Better Homes originally said they wanted to shoot "before the end of summer" but once they were aware of our situation, the wonderful Lisa Mowry helped to move things quickly along.)  His timing is, indeed, perfect.

Many of you have asked if I kept any of the changes from the photo shoot in place.  So, my answer is no :)  It's all coming with us to the new house.  I can't wait to tell you more about our new home.  I have 1000 thoughts/ideas for things I want to do going through my mind, and I'll give you a full house tour soon.

In the meantime, I promise no more big announcements (at least as far as I know. . .) on the blog for a while :)

Welcome to my newest sponsor, Place Michel!

Your Neighborhood Produce

This post is mainly for my local readers, but I just wanted to let you know about a great program I recently started using.  Your Neighborhood Produce lets you pre-order a basket of fresh fruits and vegetables from local growers, at less than half the cost you would pay at the grocery store.

I ordered the big basket for $21.50, which gives you 40-50 produce items.  And, I have to say there's something fun about going to pick up your loot in a big basket :)

They are offering several pick-up locations in Charlotte and surrounding counties, as well as two locations in SC.  And, there's a referral program where you can earn free baskets (ahemmm.. . .).

If you're in the Charlotte or surrounding area, check it out here.

And, just for fun, here's a picture I snapped with my phone of some flowers we saw while we were out running errands earlier today.  Wouldn't these colors make for a happy room?

Have a great weekend,

What makes me cringe when I look back:

This is the only photo I can find of our last living room which is probably the best it ever looked but it still makes me cringe. What is with all that brown? And the red feature wall? Really??? That big photo above the couch AND the chandelier is hung WAY too high (one of my biggest decor pet peeves now).

What I love most about my home now:
It's hard to pick just one thing really. We spent so much time (and sweat and stress) finding it and turning this home into exactly what we wanted that we better love it. But if I have to pick just one thing it would be the molding. It adds great texture even with the neutral colors on the wall.

The biggest influence in my evolving style has been:
I'm not really sure. I think being older and having had made some decor mistakes help me hone a skill to visualize better. And of course seeing the beautiful work so many 'real' people share on decor blogs is a huge factor in realizing you don't have to be a trained interior designer to have a beautifully put together home.

Details from the Better Homes & Gardens Shoot

First off, thank you all so much for the sweet words about my last post.  I received the kindest comments and emails from many of you, and I really do appreciate them all.  I just knew that you would share in my excitement.  After all, many of you have been reading this blog from close to the beginning and have seen what a ride this has been.  It really is amazing what opportunities this online world can bring your way.  (Thanks, Al Gore.  I guess I really owe this all to you.)

Okay, so on to the details of the day of the BH&G shoot.  My nerves were a little shot, mainly because I just didn't know what to expect (and maybe because I drank three cups of coffee. . . ).  Either way, I was relieved to see them show up.  (I felt much like I used to, waiting for Santa to arrive.)

I was lucky enough to get some of the very best out there to photograph and style my home.  Not only is Rob Brinson a super-talented photographer, but he was one of the nicest, most down-to-earth guys I've met.  Katie and I may have asked him a thousand questions while we waited for the shoot to start.  He probably thinks we're the most talkative Southern girls he's ever met, but we like to know stuff :)

I was most interested in seeing the stylist do her thing.  And, I had the fabulous Annette Joseph to work her magic.  When we spoke on the phone the day before, she mentioned that some designers were a little uneasy about her making changes to their homes.  I, on the other hand, was anxious to see what changes she thought needed to be made.  You know how your own home just never feels completely "finished"?  If her work is good enough for BH&G, then it was going to be good enough for me!

Katie, Annette and me after the shoot

So, the sad news is that I nearly had to swear on my life not to take any pictures of any kind while they were there.  But, I'll do my best to recap the day, and you'll just have to take my word that the pictures (at least the sneak peeks I saw) turned out beautifully.

They came in and began styling the house right away.  I have to say, seeing them march in with loads of accessories made me a little giddy (see, it was like Christmas).  None of my pillows made the cut (this made me realize I need some new, bigger pillows).  They re-accessorized my mantel, and brought in bright pops of color in each space they photographed.  Overall, I thought it looked like my house, only brighter and happier.  Of course, they brought fresh flowers, including a gorgeous arrangement of pink roses.  (This also made me wonder why I don't buy fresh flowers for our house more often. . . I'm still enjoying these in our kitchen.)

My main job was to stay out of the way; I was just trying to take it all in. . . It was amazing to me how long each of the rooms took to shoot (although they did the entire thing in one day).  Of course, I'm comparing it to how long it takes me to take pictures for my blog.  Their attention to detail is what makes them the professionals, I suppose.  My inattention to detail is what leaves me with a photograph of a plastic carrot under our sofa that I didn't see until I started uploading it to my blog. . .

They spent most of the morning shooting the dining room. (They took down the chandelier.  Wish they could've left it down; I never really loved it.)  Next, they moved onto various angles of our family room and headed to the breakfast area next.  They finished up with the master bedroom and for the grand finale? The dreaded family portrait!

Annette did give me one job, which I was happy to do.  They wanted the chairs in the breakfast area to be recovered in something more colorful than the dark leopard print.  (Suprisingly, their main concern was not trying to make Pop-Tart stains and Dorito fingers less conspicuous.)  I quickly ran to the fabric store and came back with this Waverly print:

Okay, so I know you're really wanting to know how the kids did.  Well, like I mentioned in the last post, my husband kept them away (and in happy moods!) until it was time for their pictures.  He arrived right on time with a bag full of Smarties in hand (bribery works wonders. . . ).  We quickly got dressed in our "non-seasonal" clothing and headed downstairs.  At that point, Annette told us that we were actually going to gear the family shots toward summer.  Back upstairs, it was, to change everyone's clothes, including mine.  Remember my gold top?  They liked what I already had on better.  (Don't worry, I did get to wear it to another event later that week, so it's all good.)

The fam hanging out until their big moment.  If all else fails, feed them!

My prayers must have been heard, because the kids did great!  All were unusually cooperative.  They did a shot in the breakfast room of me and the kids (you know, the way we usually sit down each morning, fully dressed, with a nice spread of food on the table and in really happy moods. . . ).  They had me repeatedly pour juice while the kids did their thing.  My two-year-old did end up under the table, but it actually worked out. . . They seemed to like her "creative direction" for the shoot.

They also did a family portrait outside.  Yes, the whole family, smiling, looking at the camera--the kind of picture that makes a momma sweat bullets.  I honestly don't know what happened or how it turned out.  I just focused on smiling and looking straight ahead and let the experts deal with everyone else in the shot.  I do know that at one point, the very nice Brent Gipson had to run some circles around the camera to make my kids laugh.  All in a day's work, I suppose.

And, remember what I said about bribery?  Well, my husband followed through and took them to Ben & Jerry's for ice cream afterwards :)

So, my overall take of the whole process?  It was lots of fun, but much more intense that I expected.  I loved watching them work and was fascinated by the detail that went into each shot.  I was also surprised at how planned out everything was (they had a really detailed "script" for each area they shot).  Some of the areas they decided to use suprised me, as well, but they made them look great through the eyes of the camera.

And for those of you who have asked, I don't yet know what issue we'll be in, but they seemed to think it might be Spring/Summer of next year.  You'll be the first to know when I find out!

And finally, I just wanted to say the biggest thanks to my friend/assistant, Katie!  She was a wonderful source of moral support during this whole thing, and I'm so thankful for her friendship and help on a daily basis as I work on growing my business.  I love working with her, and love laughing with her even more!

This is us, after the shoot--happy, exhausted and hungry! :)

Thanks for reading such a lengthy post, and again, for all of your encouragement.  This is such a blessing, and I'm happy I could share it with you.

So, I've Got Some Big News . . .

I may have been holding out on you, but I just had to wait until the right time to share my news.  We had some special visitors in the Clark household last week.  Are you ready for this?

BETTER HOMES & GARDENS came to shoot our house!

Perhaps I’m supposed to play cool, like I expect these things to happen. . . But, this was a major event for us! (I say “us” because the whole family was involved (more on that later).

So, how did this come about?  Here’s the story. . .

About two months ago, I received an email from a BH&G editor, who had received a link to my blog from one of her good designer friends who thought she should see my house.  (Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Sherry Hart!  She did this without me knowing; now that's a good blog buddy.)  I read the email approximate 278 times and then quickly got over my disbelief and sent her lots of before and after pictures of our home, family shots, etc.  At this point, I decided to be thankful she ever looked at my blog and put it out of my mind.

Then, three weeks ago, I received another email from her saying that all of the editors had given it the thumbs up and the photo shoot was a go—and was happening in just 1 ½ weeks!  I, of course, started mentally picking apart my house and everything that needed to be done.  In the end, I decided I didn’t have time to fool with any of it and just had some curtains that I had “stitch-witched” actually sewn with real hems.

Her email also mentioned that they would be doing some family shots.  My husband was on board and quickly went to get a haircut for his big moment.  I spent some time explaining to my kids how exciting/important this was and with fingers crossed, showed them pictures of other kids in BH&G happily playing in the photographs.

My kids weren’t quite as impressed as I was, so I decided the less I built it up to them, the better.  Our family photo sessions often end with atleast half of us in tears, so I had my doubts. . .

Remember our Christmas photo session from last year?  I think this explains my worries. . .

My friend/assistant Katie also became my stylist for the event and we headed to the mall for a marathon shopping trip the weekend before they came.  The email said to wear “non-seasonal” clothing, so we decided on this long gold top, belted with cuffed jeans for the pictures.  Looks simple enough, but a lot of blood, sweat and tears went into this decision.  (Did I “blend” with my house?  Did I look stylish enough for a magazine, but casual enough to be hanging out at home?  There’s a lot of pressure when you’re going to be “immortalized” in print!)  Does everyone in the magazine freak out this much?  I surely hope so.

I went shopping with flat hair. . . .Or, maybe it fell after our 3-hour mall excursion.

The day of the shoot arrived and our game plan was for Katie and me to hang out at the house, while my husband kept the troops busy elsewhere.  I had this reoccurring vision of my two-year-old pulling their camera equipment over and figured it was less stressful for everyone if the kids just came in for their pictures later in the day.

We set up bagels and fruit for them, drank coffee and watched an episode of the Real Housewives reunion while we waited for them to get there.  (Somehow, it helped to calm my nerves to watch other people acting crazy. . .)

Waiting for everyone to arrive.  Katie was nice enough to document the experience with her phone camera :)

Alright, this post is getting wordy.  I'm out of commission tomorrow but will post about the details from the day of the shoot on Wednesday. . .

(to be continued. . . )
