Well, you all just totally burst my bubble about the dresser in our foyer yesterday :) I had so many comments and emails telling me to not cover up the vent (and my husband completely agrees, btw) that now I’m just paranoid and will most likely be going with Plan B—when I figure out what that is. Thanks for caring, though. . . Maybe I’ll look for some kind of open console/sofa table.
Here’s how things stand now. I hung the gallery wall last weekend. Am I the only one who hangs frames with no art? One day at a time.

We have the same situation in our entry. I hid the vent by putting a console table in front of it. The console has a lower shelf, so a few large baskets on the bottom shelf "cover" the vent from view without blocking the airflow. It's doable!

It looks awesome, and I would just leave it alone. (I mean, add art, of course.) So long as that vent isn't the only one doing whatever it is doing, I think you are fine!

1 - My wall gallery has been up for about two months and I STILL haven't gotten around to filling them.
ReplyDelete2 - I hate seeing vents at my house and other peoples houses...It's kind of like seeing cords everywere, or the inside of someone's closet. They make your house function better, yes, but they shouldnt really be a 'focal point.'
An open console table would work well... maybe you could paint the vent out in the same color of the wall so it is not AS noticeable and then add a bench! I love the piece you have though... so much storage! No you are not the only one that hangs frames with no art!

Ok I am the minority and a dude but I LIKE vents.....they are part of the inner workings in your house, why not embrace what keeps you warm and cool? I like the idea of taking an antique or antique looking vent and repurposing it over your existing vent.....style and function.

I don't always put art or photos, but I usually put SOMETHING! I have put magazine or catalog photos before (anthropologie pages are fabulous), or just scrapbook paper in a neutral pattern until I found a substitute!

My husband is an HVAC expert and he would say don't cover it or leave a large percentage uncovered. What ever you do I'm sure it will be great. Furniture with open bottoms work well for me and pass with my HVAC man.

I don't care for "exposed" outlets on the kitchen backsplash, in the walls of mirrors in the bathroom, etc., and VENTS are no exception~~~ "ewwwww!"...(Grins!)...
MY SOLUTION was to "simply" have the vent "moved"... I am HAPPY now, BUUUUT, little did I know that it would cost ALMOST $600 by the time all was said & done, just to "SIMPLY move a vent!"~~~ (Yeah, I know, "Merry Christmas to me!"... ha ha!)...

ReplyDeleteCan you just have the dresser sit a few inches away from the wall and "frame" the sides with a tall statue/umbrella stand/plant so the gap is not so noticeable? If you can find a tall piece of stamped metal radiator you could lean it behind the dress to keep the airflow and add some texture.

ReplyDeleteI was wondering...what about stenciling a design on a vent? It would not be a conventional stenciling, but it would put a design on the vent to make it more decorative...
ReplyDeleteI am always amused at how functional hardware drive some people mad, while others (myself) appreicate the function of the hardware and can accept it. Not judging, really, just commenting. I guess my acceptance ties into my liking of industrial chic.
That last photo is awesome - it looks great. No art in the frames and all! My husband is big on not covering the vents, but as long as they have some type of room then I'm always fine with it. It looks great already. have a great weekend!
