My First Attempt at Abstract Art

I’ve decided that the ability to create abstract art would be a good one to have for my clients (who want art from an inexpensive, not-so-well-known artist!) and for another little endeavor that I have in the works.

So, over the weekend, I got out my paintbrush, my kids’ acrylic paints, and went to work.  First attempt, not so good:

Something seemed to be missing.  (My kids could’ve done a better job—remember these?)  I let it sit overnight, studied some other paintings for inspiration and went back to work, painting over it.

Take 2:

Better, right?  I’m sure there’s some technique to this, but for my first try at abstract, I don’t think it’s totally terrible.  (Can you tell I attempted to make it look more professional by styling it with some accessories I had handy?)

I may have found my new hobby.  If for no one else, then just for my own enjoyment :)

  7. This post made me smile, Emily! I recently bought some canvases to try something similar. (Mind you, I am NOT an artist!) However I thought if I painted varying shades of blue and green, it might actually resemble a very abstract landscape. I'm going to have my kids do some too, and we'll see whose comes out better. My money is on the kids! :)

  27. LOVE!! I went to a 3 hr art class with my sister this weekend- we had way too much fun attempting to paint! It was a detailed painting so I think i would have had more fun if it were abstract.

  28. Definitely love your second attempt. I've been painting for years & years and I can tell you that some days it will come easily and some days it won't. I think its dependent on mood, etc. But your painting is lovely! So happy you shared!

  29. I'd take either one - love the colors in both! In fact, they would look really great in my daughter's room. Maybe I've found my next project.

  40. I'm not an artist either. But I did a really huge abstract painting for a church youth room I decorated. Everyone thought it was great! Go figure...LOL! And the best thing was that I used plain old latex wall paint right over an oversized 1980's framed oil painting. Taped off the frame before painting and in the end, it seemed to work pretty well :-)

  45. One "trick" you can try is to rotate the canvas every so often. So you start painting on direction then just flip it 90 degrees and paint some more, then flip it 90 degrees again and paint some more. The other "trick" is to paint on some tissue paper between layers of paint. This will add texture and depth and create some randomness. Once you start doing this you will come up with tons of other ideas to get to your abstract paintings. It will become addictive.

  46. This is EXACTLY what I want. Need a pair the same size...about 30 x 36. Where can I get them?

    ReplyDelete
  47. It's no surprise that your second attempt is perfection! I love that you jumped in and tried it, then perfected it ... it's beautiful. :)
