This might be the paint for you. I was in Sherwin-Williams picking up paint for the house over the weekend and discovered this display while I was waiting:
This is the first time I’ve seen this paint, but they had a display set up in the store where you could write on it with marker and clean with water and a paper towel to see for yourself.
Worked just like they said. (Excuse the shadows and bad phone pics.) The Duration paint side wiped off easily, but I’m wondering how soon you have to get to the marks or if it would still wipe off after several days/weeks.
It is a little pricier than regular paint, but as someone who’s had chap stick, Sharpies--and worse--on her walls, I think it might be worth it, if it works.
Have you had any experience with Duration paint?
If not, just tell me something funny/gross/etc. your kids have done to your walls. I could use a good laugh :)

good to know! I thankfully haven't had any wall disasters (yet), but my husband called the other night while I was the grocery to ask if I had any ideas of how to get Sharpie off the kitchen floors and our dining room table...thankfully, Magic Eraser did the trick. :)
ReplyDeleteMy kids have thankfully been good to the walls, but my daughter and her friend used their fingernails to scratch pictures into the custom leather ottoman in our living room. Stick figures and their names. And those scratches are DEEP. So much for thinking leather is kid-friendly!
ReplyDeleteOh yes, yes I do - check out my permanent marker posts:

Sounds like that paint would have been useful here :D Thanks for the tip!
I've had the leather experience - a billboard right across the back of the couch - leather cleaner buff most of it out but you can see their names if you look closely. My little girl has recently taken to drawing tiny little smiley faces on walls and doors with magic marker. And she's sneaky, they are in corners and unexpected places, like the lower corner as you open the pantry door. My son used to think it was funny to throw is food on the wall when I turned my back. He's 7 now and it's gross, but I still find spots I need to clean up (especially when moving furniture around). We play can you guess what that is...
ReplyDeleteWe painted our last kitchen with Duration. No kids, but we have dogs...including a puppy that had a very bad accident on the day of a house showing, no less. A little Magic Eraser and the wall looked brand new.
ReplyDeleteEmily I love Duration! I always end up going to Duron/SW to fix a job that Behr messed up. Its totes worth the 10 extra bucks, great coverage, wonderful to put on, and its TRUE TO THE COLOR. that was most important to me :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I have marks on the walls & we even don't have kids. My husband isn't the most careful when it comes to touching walls. I've been able to erase the marks with a Magic Eraser but it does change the finish on the wall. I just painted all my rooms last year. I wish I had known about this paint then. The thought of repainting everything all over again makes me sad.
ReplyDeleteWhen my daughter was 2 she put on my pink lipstick and kissed the wall along the stairwell. I left those little puckered lips for years until it was time to repaint last year. It was a bittersweet moment painting over those lips. Now her brother on the other hand decided to leave his "mark" by taking a sharpie and coloring all over his fathers office armoire, desk, file cabinet and carpet. *sigh* The difference between girls & boys I guess.
ReplyDeleteThe worst I've dealt with so far is my 3yo daughter sneaking a face paint stick into her bedroom and spending nap time quietly painting all of her walls and the inside of her closet doors..."like Rapunzel!". I nearly bought stock in Magic Eraser after that day, as it took me two full packs of erasers and an hour and a half to clean up.
ReplyDeleteWill DEFINITELY be trying out Duration paint!
I'm typically a BM girl, but I've used Duration twice now - on the exterior of my home and in the interior in my bathroom. Loved the coverage haven't verified the scrubbability, but since it's a little less expensive than my favorite BM - Regal Matte, I'm planning to use it more regularly.
ReplyDeleteI still seem to regularly find dried boogers on walls even though my boys are 13, 11 and 6 - but those wash off pretty easily :) My grossest wall story also involves the carpet and the stairs. When the 11 yr. old was about 6, we let the kids stay up to ring in the New Year for the first time. About 2 hours later he got up, stood at the top of the stairs (which is right outside the bathroom door - he was so close!!) and proceeded to throw up his grape juice (because he didn't want sparkling cider) down the whole stairwell - it splattered big-time - over all 14 steps, the wall, the ballisters and through the ballisters to the downstairs wall opposite the stairwell! I laughed even then - I figured it'd make a great story and it was either laugh or cry :)
ReplyDeleteDuration is my favorite! Great thinking with if it will do the same after a week or longer.... its a little more work than, but yes it still cleans up nice! I'm using duration on my upper cabinets now.
ReplyDeleteIf you never use duration, what do you use? Oh, and ALWAYS buy it when they have the 40% off sale:)
we just painted our first half of the finished remodel with this - in white. it's been wonderful. and they put it on sale every few months for $30 a gallon. And we loaded up - two five gallon buckets and they gave us a deal on those as well. And they said, just mention that you need it cheaper and they'll typically give you the deal before the sale. sorry, just a little hint for my fellow cheapers.
ReplyDeleteI have 6 kids and many, many gross wall stories. I've found that Costco's house-brand baby wipes are great for cleaning walls and doors. Their little bit of fuzziness seems to get in the cracks and around the texture.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love Duration. Our painter recommended it and I can attest to it's durability... we used it in areas where my kids play the most and it's been fantastic, esp with scuffs from toy trucks and cars. It's well worth the higher price tag!
ReplyDeleteI have little ones and a huge dog and thought I would give this paint a try. My husband is a bit of a "paint snob" :), and we usually buy Ben Moore. However, we thought we would give this a try. Unfortunately, he said the product does not go on the walls very well and I didn't like the finish. We now always stick with what works (BM) and never have a problem. I use their eggshell finish and it wipes off just fine. Just my 2cents worth! :) Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI love Sherwin Williams - paint haven't seen that one yet, they are pricier but most times worth it
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing! I'm wondering if the paint is extra smelly? Should I wait until I can open up the windows without freezing before trying this paint? (we typically use freshaire b/c the paint smell gives me a headache).
ReplyDeleteHa ha ha! I so thought this post was going to be a sharpie wall stencil idea. :) Good to know about this new magical tool, though, instead!
ReplyDeleteI've never used this paint but what I have done for the last 30 years is use semi-gloss paint for the walls and trim. Whie this is very unconventional, it cleans VERY easily and lasts much longer that flat paint without looking dingy. It has served me well over time through 5 kids unlike other freshly painted homes that I have been in that immediately look dirty due to kids and dogs (and I don't meant toddlers, teenagers can ruin some walls by bumps and scrapes).
ReplyDeleteWe used Duration Home on every square inch of our home. It's awesome. We so far the little one hasn't caused any problems, but the husband gets a little crazy in the kitchen with BBQ and it always comes right off. It is a little stinky, but I don't remember having to open any windows in the process (actually i know we couldn't because before we replaced all the old windows, they were all stuck).
ReplyDeleteGo for it!
When I was a kid I used to write "I hate Sarah" on my walls to get my brothers in trouble. My Mom was appalled when I told her it was me who did that.
ReplyDelete-Sarah.
This is the only paint we use & I LOVE IT!!! Only buy it when it's on sale though :). Great coverage and everything wipes off it w/ out a trace.
ReplyDeleteI thought I was the only one who could honestly say this, but thankfully like others who have commented, my boys never wrote on any walls, floor, frig, etc. They were constantly drawing, coloring, painting, using markers but we provided TONS of paper :-)
ReplyDeleteI do like SW paints and I think the extra cost is worth it!
I saw this post and I literally gasped - how's that for overly dramatic? The Duration paint is terrible, don't do it!!! Any and every touch up after the fact shows. My husband and I have hated it from the moment we painted our house with. We did find the perfect flat, washable paint at BM though. Their Regal paint is the absolute best - can't go wrong there. Completely washable and touch-ups blend completely.

Painted our entire office in Duration and loved it..now painting our entire house in Duration...definitely works like it says...we have 3 kids and a chocolate lab...yes, water fixes most scratches and does not leave a sheen difference..great product!
ReplyDeleteWhat haven't my kids drawn on? I've had orange craft paint on the couch. Sharpie on the counter and wall. Pen on my leather couch. Dry erase marker and wall paint on the carpet. Not to mention the crayon/pencil/ pen stuff on the wall. What can I say? I gave birth to 3 little artists. Thankfully, I've been able to fix MOST of their art work.
ReplyDeleteWe just painted the entire first floor of our home with Duration Amazing Gray. I LOVE it! Beautiful. I have three kids under the age of 5, so you can imagine what's all over our walls. Everything wipes off beautifully. Highly recommend!
ReplyDeleteIn my experience, no paint is truly scrubbable, especially in the lighter colors. You can get the marker, scuff or whatever it is off the wall, but you have a shadow where you scrubbed. I use flat / matte finish paint so that I can just paint right over the marks. To me, that works better than anything! Although I will say that my Benjamin Moore Aura paint has held up *great* ...
ReplyDeleteMy daughter (2) took a texta to the wall for the first time in her life last month. Literally within 12 hrs of us painting it - we had painted it the evening before then she attacked it in the morning. Possibly didn't like the colour? I just got the roller out and went over it. Thankfully she has left the newly painted walls alone so far.
ReplyDeleteI use Duration Home on many projects and my clients have been very happy with the washability. I have it in my own kitchen and it gets washed down every week or so. Good prep work gives the best results -- for any paint.
ReplyDeleteSW paint is great -- and they run 40% off sales all the time...so I'd try it out then.
ReplyDeletewe've had our share of sharpie...the mr clean magic erasor helped it some. what is in that thing anyway?!?!?!?
I love Sherwin Williams Duration paint. We used it a couple of years ago when painting several rooms in our home. It's the only paint I'll buy now. Even though we don't have little ones in the home right now; I still feel it's worth the extra cost. This paint really gives a beautiful color depth to the walls.
