I do believe I would cover them with bead board and paint them black. (How great is this foyer?)

I first saw this solution for popcorn ceilings here, but the black paint really takes it up a notch.
Have you ever tackled this project? Curious if it’s really as easy as just applying the bead board directly over the textured ceiling. . . Here’s one article I found, but would love to hear about your experience.
This foyer is to die for. That framed bead board is so unique. Not to mention the matching light pendants. Love!

So clever. I dislike the popcorn so much that when we were buying the house we are in now, I told the agent not to show me any houses with it!! Wish I had seen this fix (b/c the taking it down process is a true mess). M.

ReplyDeleteYes, the ceilings are great, but so is the rest of the house! Love it all. This is a classy solution to a not so classy design. Who ever thought popcorn ceilings were a good idea in the first place?!

LOVE this!! I have a client who is doing exactly that! except instead of painting them black they will be distressed and lime washed. But I like the black especially for a foryer.

ReplyDeleteI don't have popcorn ceilings but I do have plaster that kept cracking. So I had MDF put up...cheaper than wood and painted it. Looks great!
ReplyDeleteMy husband is a renovator and he says he installs a thinner (1/4 inch) dry wall over the textured ceiling then finishes it smooth. I think he may sand down the textured ceiling before putting up the new drywall.. they turn out great.

ReplyDeleteMy textured ceiling doesn't both me, though. All the walls, trim, ceiling and doors are painted a crisp white (I'm going for a gallery-feel, fitting because of all the artwork I have on display) and the ceilings kind of blend in. I never even think about them. Hmmmm.

Great timing on this post as I am staring at my popcorn ceiling house. I saw some plank style beadboard/sheets in HD the other day and am thinking they will cover up the popcorn ceiling nicely. Now to just get the hubby on board. Thanks for the inspiration!

ReplyDeleteWe discuss tackling this project at least once a year but it's been 12 years now! It's absolutely daunting and too expensive to hire out. I keep trying to psych myself up, esp in the kitchen... I'll let you know when I get there. :)

ReplyDeleteVery interesting look! I wonder if the budget was tight, and if popcorn ceilings existed, how do you all think using the "beadboard looking" 4' x 8' paneling would work? (It can be painted any color if desired.) I just looked at that yesterday in the store and thought of so many uses for it on a tight budget!It was about $25/sheet and then of course you could trim it out for a finished look. Not bad and anything's better than popcorn ceilings!
