I’ve had a few readers ask me for advice on how to accessorize end tables, console tables, dressers, etc. It’s definitely one of those things that’s easier to do than explain how and usually just takes some “playing” until it feels right. There are, of course, those “design rules” that are typically a good rule of thumb. . . Vary the height of your grouping, use an uneven number of items, etc.
And, there are some items that are usually a sure bet—a nice tray, a glass vase or container, a decorative box, books, etc. Those quirky, unexpected items are also great to mix in. It’s hard to go out and buy a group of accessories to make the perfect vignette. Instead, collect over time and pick up those little pieces that catch your eye. In other words, if you’re at Homegoods and spot a purple ceramic bird that makes you smile but you have nowhere to put it, buy it anyway. It might work perfectly on a stack of books. It ultimately comes down to how you mix it, and including pieces that have special meaning to you makes it even better.
Okay, enough words. Here are some good inspiration pictures for arranging vignettes on accent tables in your home. Think layers.

Gorgeous! Makes me want to go home & redo my table decor! Xo.
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! and you are so right- its one of those things you have to get your hands on and "try this" ,"try that". I love shopping my house to find "new" things to display.
ReplyDeleteThese are lovely combinations of unrelated things. Classy.
ReplyDeleteMy only complaint about groupings is that they make it harder to dust! (Not that I actually dust very often!!) lol!
All beautiful examples. So pretty. And I am over the moon about Caitlin's fabric. Already ordered samples.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I have been working on a table in my den and after seeing these and hearing your advice I think it's probably good! Now can you talk to me about mantles? ;o)
ReplyDeleteCreating vignettes are some of my favorite things to do. Combining accessories to see what works together? Yes, please. It really is all about what you can combine together!
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Emily. As you said, this is definitely one of those things that's easier to do than explain and I think you did a great job. I also find that I have vignette ADD where I constantly get board with ways accessories are styled and have to move them to other areas of our house.
ReplyDeleteGreat inspiration! I love creating vignettes...maybe I even spend a free Saturday morning doing them. But I never feel like one is every quite right.
ReplyDeleteThere are some great ideas that I think I'll use.
ReplyDeleteSuch great reminders and amazing inspiration pics!
ReplyDeleteOoh, these are great! Just what I need to FINALLY getting the dresser in the master bedroom styled. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm so glad you told me to buy something if I like it at Home Goods. If my husband has any questions, I'm gonna just tell him Emily said it was o.k.! ;o)
ReplyDeleteI love the silver tray holding the candles with a antler placed next to it. Inspired!
