Whether you’re a fan of Pottery Barn or not, you have to admit their catalogs always have some good food for thought when it comes to accessorizing. They have a great styling team, and I always look through the pages carefully for new and unexpected ways to arrange/store/display things around the house.
Here are some easy styling tricks I spotted in the latest catalog. . .
- A pretty basket makes a great trash can, especially if it’s in plain view.
- You don’t have to stop at just two rugs when layering carpets.
- Trays and simple containers make everything look more stylish and organized on your desk top.
- Create a faux bulletin board by taping a collection of favorite photos inside picture frame molding.
- Make simple storage baskets more interesting and personal by attaching clipboards, numbers, etc. (pretty notecards or vintage photographs would work, too).
- Use an old trophy as pencil/pen storage. (One of my favorite ideas.)
- Have trouble coming up with centerpieces? This one is super simple. Grab three terra cotta pots (the more weathered, the better), fill with greenery and layer over a pretty table runner.
- I recently saw a similar display on Pinterest and like the collected look they bring to a space. Silver trays are a dime a dozen at Goodwill and other thrift stores. Pretty and inexpensive!
- Struggling with that awkward space above the TV? Hanging a horizontal tapestry is an interesting idea.
- So many ideas I like here—using old door knobs as picture hangers, dominos on a window sill (cute for a kid’s room) and the numbers add a fun, graphic punch.
- Cut wood doesn’t just have to be stored near a fireplace. Filling bookcases with it is a great way to add natural texture.
- Group lots of the same item in small galvanized containers—another inexpensive option for storage on your desk, kitchen counters, bedroom dressers, etc.
- All art doesn’t have to be framed. Layering these old maps and pinning them directly to the wall gives the room a really casual, relaxed feel.
- Love the idea of using clips to display photographs, postcards, notes, etc. So easy to change out and more interesting than picture frames.
- Don’t be afraid to hang art above the doorway height. It draws your eye up and works especially well here to create balance.
Besides Pottery Barn, what other catalogs do you draw styling inspiration from?

I love PB and anxiously await the catalogs arrival in the mail, the last one with the Halloween decor was an especially good one!
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!

I love seeing what has been done in the Pottery Barn Catalog. Do you get the Restoration Hardware one? I recently got a 400 page fall source catalog from them and it's full of great inspiration and photos.
ReplyDeleteSay what you want about PB, you are right. They have great stylist and you can get wonderful ideas reading there catalog.
ReplyDeleteI really like PB for so many reasons, but I never really took notice on things you just pointed out. Thank you for opening my eyes! ;-)
ReplyDeleteLots of love to you, Emily.

ReplyDeleteGood eye, good eye! These are some really great ideas!
ReplyDeletePB does do a great job of styling, I def get some ideas. Ballard too. I just got the Restoration Hardware in the mail...it's like a phone book!! so obnoxious I just threw it away! Or recycled it, rather.

Great post!!! Love the ideas you pointed out. I spend a lot of time flipping through PB mags for ideas on styling and entertaining. Great inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI love the Anthropologie catalog! I find the best craft ideas in there, so inspiring! I also like the Ballard catalog..
ReplyDeleteGreat tips girlfriend! I posted pics of Carsons big Boy room yesterday! I am going to do a post tomorrow giving all the details and showing you some love too :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not a huge fan of PB, but I do love their styling! Thanks for pointing out some of the tips we can easily use in our own homes as well. I love the idea of using silver trays on a wall.
ReplyDeleteGreat tips. Pottery Barn does have fabulous stylists. I used to love walking through the store to get tips on how to arrange vignettes. Love the image of the mercury pumpkins and silver trays together, I might have to steal that one :).
ReplyDeleteWhile I do love PB, I have a hard time taking their catalog (or any for that matter) seriously after discovering this website: http://catalogliving.net/
ReplyDeleteI'm at catalog addict! There is just something about seeing a designer’s P.O.V and borrowing that for inspiration.
ReplyDeleteBut speaking of catalog details have you ever visited www.catalogliving.net? It is a quirky blog that takes note of the styling and details that you see in catalogs.
Designer blasphemous? Maybe.
Funny? Yes
Lots of creative styling tricks to provide inspiration! They are pros at layering.

I save my catalogs just for inspiration. I always love the way they style tables - especially coffee tables. I also love Ballard.
ReplyDeleteThese are all great ideas, thank you for critiquing them all for us.

Ok, so you have GOT to go to this website to see another take on catalog pics. I think they use a lot of PB pages. Maybe it's just my sense of humor, but I think they are really funny.

I enjoyed this catalog - all that layering! I wonder where I can pull this off in my space...hmmm...
ReplyDeleteLOVE the use of the basket as a trash can.... the horrible plastic one under my office desk has got to go & I was struggling with what to replace it with.... struggle no more... a basket it will be!
ReplyDeleteI get lots of ideas from studying PB catalogs and wandering through the store. One day I noticed a clerk styling a shelf and he had a print-out that showed him exactly where to place each item. He said this way there is no guesswork and he quickly get it done. That's what I need a printout, only using all my items!
ReplyDeleteI like the knob idea for hanging pictures. That could work in a certain spot and setting.
One thing I've learned is that larger objects make a statement and provide substance in a vignette -- consider the larger vase instead of the medium sized one. PB and RH do this all the time. I always want to save money and go for the smaller one but one large piece in an arrangement can really make the difference. That applies to outdoor pots as well.
I really like PB too and am inspired by them. I got all excited the other day and did a little "shopping in my own home/garden shed" to come up with an interesting Fall display for our kitchen...sorta PB/Ballard Designs inspired :-) There'll be photos on my blog coming soon. You're all invited to take a peek..and sign up too!
