Now:
And Then. . .
What makes me cringe when I look back:
Everything! From the deep dark colors, that were so IN at the time, to the vast abundance of accessories to the faux florals that were everywhere. So glad I got out of that phase and got rid of the fakes. Real plants all the way for me now. You can see I still have many pieces of this furniture still and love that I chose wisely there.
What I love most about my home now:
I'm not actually in this house anymore, but what I loved at the time was the open and airy feeling it had. Everything got lightened up in that house and my mostly neutral furniture was a good back drop for changing out accessories and fabrics to bring in those much needed pops of color. Just paring down on too many accessories and getting rid of the fake florals (long time coming!) did a lot for this room too.
The biggest influence on my evolving style has been:
Most definitely, being online with like-minded decorators has influenced me more than ever. I try not to totally jump on the trend band wagon, but I am more swayed than not when something pretty and new comes along. Design and DIY bloggers are full of style and inspiration and I constantly get infused with so many ideas that I'd love to try. Maybe in the next house! Shelter magazines are a huge source of inspiration to me too. I still love to turn the pages of a new home magazine.

I have to admit, 10 years ago, I would’ve thought Rhoda’s “old style” was the bomb! :) I was all about the more, the bigger, the better! To see more of Rhoda’s projects and to learn about the Haven Conference she’s organizing next year, visit her blog.

Love looking back....scary huh! I love Rhoda...she is an unbelievable person.

I feel the same way when I look back at my own decorating sometimes. Back then, it WAS impressive. Now, in a fresher palette, it is even more so. Great job, Rhoda!
ReplyDeleteLove it! The 'now' space seems so much more relaxing and comfortable.

OH! Oh wow. That's... red. Wow.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how decorating trends change, isn't it?
So much fun to look back, isn't it? I'm so glad that simplified interiors are the norm now - the cluttered rooms we all had make my eyes hurt now!
ReplyDeleteEmily,
ReplyDeleteWow! Love this series -- so inspiring to see how our sense of design evolves.
Thank you for sharing!
Best,

The 'NOW' photos look wonderful, Rhoda! And I love how you kept some of the same furniture pieces - just goes to show that good furniture is timeless, and they look like entirely new pieces with the room makeover. Job well done!

This so makes me laugh- because we've all been there-MORE IS MORE- right? Makes me wonder though-in 10-15 yrs what will we cringe about in our current homes? Too light? too bare? too much graphic prints? LOL its kinda fun to think about.
ReplyDeleteRhoda is such a wonderful person and I always enjoy reading her blog! It's always fun to take a walk down memory lane (although it can be a little shocking) and see what use to be "in style" and where our own style is today!
ReplyDeleteWow... I remember so many homes looking just like that! Thank goodness we grew out of it. Emily, I think this is my favorite blog series ever!
ReplyDeleteI love how bright the room looks now! For some reason dark living rooms were in for a while! Great transformation!

ReplyDeleteI just posted a "now" and "then" post on my blog if you'd like to take a look. So far I've posted a bathroom and my daughters bedroom. I'll be posting another bedroom Monday and the whole house soon. Wood floors will be stained on Monday and then we'll be able to take pictures. :)
That is quite the change - I love how open and airy Rhoda's "now" space looks - it's beautiful.
