Now:
What makes me cringe when I look back:
I cringe at this room for a much different reason than it being unattractive. The reason the room is so plain is because at the time, I was paralyzed with fear when trying to choose colors and design. I was so afraid of making a wrong choice, that I played it safe (and boring), and did nothing. Eventually, I realized there are no 'wrong' choices in your own home, it's about creating a space you love. That, and you can always re-paint!
What I love most about my home now:
I love that I have the confidence to make bold design choices most of the time now. My home is completely my own (well, and Mr. Sugarplum's) and it's slowly becoming my very favorite place. The greatest joy is probably how proud my kids are of their rooms when friends come over. They were even featured in the Dallas Morning News!

The biggest influence on my evolving style has been:
There is so much easy access to great design these days, but my biggest influence has to be blogs. First was the inspiration I saw every day on other people's blogs, then came the confidence I gained in myself as I started writing about my makeovers on my own blog. I am amazed every day by the talent showcased and shared freely by design bloggers like Emily!

I just love this series - I found it so encouraging and refreshing to hear that we all have designs in our past that aren't the greatest, or have things that held back our "inner designer"! :) Those kids rooms are adorable...I also spend a lot of time on my kids' rooms and they love them which makes me so happy...

Emily,
ReplyDeleteI love your blog. Always creative and insightful.
How would I get to be part of the "Now & then" series? I'm not sure that I would even qualify to your standards, but I am a DIY girl.
