Kindergarten

Hard to believe I sent another baby off to kindergarten last week. . . .

Seems like only yesterday (well, maybe last year) that I was there myself.  I found this picture while I was unpacking boxes and could still name nine of my classmates.  I also distinctly remember that sweater being itchy, but my mom liked it, so I wore it anyway.

What do you remember about kindergarten?

  1. That my mom and grandmother were my teachers. Making my plaster hand. The smell of Elmer's glue. Tricycle races (they don't have tricycle races as part of K anymore - why?). My BFF's Lisa, Carol and Evonne.

  2. Ughh! So darling. I love the photo of them walking off. My oldest begins Kinder in September and I can hardly believe it. I remember my artwork being framed {while in K} at the front of the school. I felt so special. I think that is why we frame so much art around here.

  10. Loving the UK backpack! And the hello kitty, of course. ;-) I, too, just sent one to kindergarten this year...my firstborn. He loves it...me?!?!....I'm dealing.

  11. So cool that you found your kindergarten picture! Our one and only baby started kindergarten Friday...time goes by so fast, I'm a little sad about the whole thing.

  12. I moved back to the US just in time for kindergarten. I remember crying for weeks in the centers corner during recess because all the other children told me I talked funny. I talked with a British accent. I practiced dropping it just so the other kids would play with me!

  13. What a sweet pic!
I remember walking in and being amazed at the play area with a little mini kitchen there. And the big piano in the corner that the teacher would play each day while we sang songs. And if it happened to be your birthday, you got to stand next to her, holding the honeycomb cardboard birthday cake while everyone sang "happy birthday" to you. ah... good times! :)

  14. My oldest started Kindergarten last week also. She loved it and even begged to ride the bus!

I remember being equally excited and loving my first day of Kindergarten and that another girl name Crystal cried all day long.

  15. Ooohh!! So sweet. And I love her backpack. : ) Kindergarten was the best wasn't it?? My first day, I rode the bus all the way until the end because I was too shy to get up and get off the bus. Haha--So my bus driver found me in a seat in the middle of her bus and took me home. I remember her being so sweet and even gave me a blow pop for the rest of the ride. Haha. Definitely made my first day memorable. Hope your kiddos had a great day.

  17. There was a boy in my class who knew how to read already and I wanted to read too. I was serious about coloring inside of the lines because I didn't want a messy picture. My teacher also had a pretty alphabet quilt on her wall and she looked like Cher. That was fun! Thanks for bringing back memories.

  20. Being the first girl with glasses (but I could finally watch TV from across the room...who knew you could do that!?!). Milk in bottles and my class dropped and broke so many they changed to paper cartons. And this will show my age, but our teacher leaving the room and coming back and telling us President Kennedy had been shot.

  21. When I was that age, there wasn't public kindergarten in our little town. So my older sister and I didn't get to go because the private kindergarten teacher told my parents "They're too smart for kindergarten." LOL! My younger sisters and brother went when public kindergarten started. Times change I guess :-)

  22. LOVE the group photo, Emily. The little boy on the front row in the yellow shirt? Are those "jazz hands" I see? ha ha!

  23. My husband took the morning off on our daughter's first day of kindergarten and rode along with us to school in my car. As soon as she went in the door I started crying so hard my hubs had to drive home. That was 25 years ago; you won't believe how fast time will fly!

  24. What a cute photo (the group one and the one of your children :)). I loved my kindergarten teacher and remember a few things - playing at the water table, finger painting, and going to my teacher's house to make home made peanut butter with the class (no way that would happen anymore!)

  25. I send my first off to kindergarten tomorrow. Yikes! I live in North Dakota. In the winter, my mom would make me wear pants under my dresses to keep warm. My clearest kindergarten memory is pulling down the pants and my wonder woman underwear coming with them. In the hall. In front of a boy. Sigh.

  26. How adorable Emily! Isn't it fun to look back on those photos of us as kids??!! I totally remember my kindergarten picture and the little sundress my mom put me in, tying the straps at the tops of my shoulders before I left for school.

  27. ... the smell of freshly sharpened pencils and ink on paper. Those scents bring back waves of memories! I also remember thinking if I had to wear a school uniform for the rest of my life, I'd cry :)

  28. What I remember is getting in trouble a lot! I'm a talker - what can I say? Love the UK backpack and our girls are both Hello Kitty fans! I also remember one other thing - my Strawberry Shortcake metal lunch box. My mom still has it - with the thermos and everything!

  29. I remember lining up for little boxes of milk, getting grass stains on my pink overalls (devastating), and being chased everyday by my friend Charlie (now Chuck)on the playground. My oldest heads off to K next week and I'm so not ready. Time's passing is bittersweet for sure. Good luck and hope your guys have tons of memories like it seems most of us do!

  30. I just moved my son to attend college three hours away and
I still remember his first day of kindergarten vividly.
He came home, layed out on the couch and said kindergarten was sooooooooooo hard.
I asked him what he did that day.
    His reply, "Made cookies."

  31. I remember my mom talking to the teacher beforehand and being so unhappy that they told her "We *don't* read in kindergarten" ... because I already knew how to read. I also remember befriending the only little girl on the bus who was smaller than I was ... even though her plastic barrettes were two different ones. And yes, I was nice enough not to point that out. ;-)

  32. I remember getting in trouble for skipping class! In my defense the teacher was making the class create a birthday card for the principal. I refused to make the card because the principal was a stranger and my mom told me not to talk to strangers, so I asked to go to the bathroom or get a drink of water or some such. I played on the swings.

I also remember the playhouse in the classroom and practicing writing the alphabet.

  33. We had nuns so I can't say any one of them stood out until I got to third grade and she made me cry!

Hope your little one enjoyed her first day and mom didn't have too many tears!

  35. Love this! Seeing this Kindergarten picture of you makes me realize that...Eli looks JUST LIKE YOU (in boy form of course) when you were little!
