A Coral Catastrophe?

Remember our bookcases in our old family room?

Well, I have the perfect spot for them in our new house, and I got a wild hair to paint the backs of them this color:

Hmmmm. . . . I forgot that this small task would take close to an hour and a half of my life, thanks to paint that didn’t take too well to the particle board back.

Notice they’re going on a wall that will be painted the darker swatch of gray you see to the right. . .

I’m still trying to decide if they look spectacular or like that color everyone paints their toe nails before Spring Break. . . .  Only time, and some really good styling, will tell.

  1. I'm dying because my toenails are that color right now.

I think they look awesome!! And although everyone will say that, I really mean it. Especially since I was pretty sad to see you paint over navy.

  2. I personally love it! Can't wait to see it styled up!

  3. We must be on the same wavelength again. I have no doubt that you will pull it off.

    Happy weekend Emily!

  4. Like I always say "it just paint." I love the coral its a nice punch of color but when you tire of it just grab that brush. I've changed the color inside my bookcases three times already. My husband says "you know if you keep changing the paint you won't have any room left to dispaly things." Isn't he funny :)

  5. Once you put stuff in there and paint the walls I think it will look awesome!

  6. It looks really fun. Any plans on using the color coral elsewhere in the room?
    Not that you need to.

  7. I'm pretty sure it does remind me of cajun shrimp by OPI but in a very very good way! I can't wait to see if complete!

  8. I like it, but then again I'm partial to coral.

  9. I like it, but its a little hard to tell because you can't really see it w/the rest of the color scheme. I would keep it and decide later - it could be a quick fix if you end up not liking it.

  10. Thank you for sharing!! So weird- I actually have that color paint swatch taped the the back of my cream bookshelf trying to decide if its a go or a no. I'm now thinking YES!! Looks great and will look fabulous with your styling. Love it!

  13. I can see it come together, especially because of the wall color. I'm not a huge fan of coral, but I'm really living it here, so that's says a lot! It'll look great with accessories and it will make the room feel happy, summer year-round.

    Have a great weekend!

  14. I haven't really given this color much thought but it looks very gorgeous against the back of your bookshelves. I can't wait to see your new wall color and your bookshelves all styled up! Great color selection!

  17. The color in the can looks the best..the close-up looks orange, the last pic looks very cool. Would need to see bookshelf with perspective of the whole room. Definitely looks promising and of course, this is just a backdrop for the books and curios.

  18. I think once you style them the color will tone down and I bet you will love it, if you truly love that color. It is hard sometimes we add a new kid on the block to the mix. You have amazing style so I know you will make the right call, you always do!! Kathysue

  24. I have to admit that I'm sorry to see the blue go, but give you credit for taking a risk. And yes, I just removed a very similar color from my toes yesterday! :)

In all seriousness, I think it has the potential to look great with the gray walls.

  25. I love it!!! I can't wait to see how you style it.

  26. I can see it with blue & white vases in it -- they'd really pop against the coral.

  27. Emily, the color is awesome and I know you will pull it off - love your design. I think the problem was that you bought a SW "sample" and the sample paints are watered down and will not last a long time - trust me, I learned the hard way. :(

  28. Ooooo, I like the color! Seems like with shells and such for summer, then leaves and such for fall, it'll work nicely all year long. Will definitely depend on the styling, though! Can't wait to see!

  29. Emily,
    I love love love it!
We stayed in a beach house that had built in "beachy blue" book cases with the backs painted in a coral like yours. I absolutely loved it and know your's are going to come out fabulous!

  30. I agree that bold moves take time to sink in and live with before making a decision. I like the coral! And I'm assuming these are in your living room? So curious to see how you work this in with your neutral color scheme.

I love navy. I love coral.

Top two color choices for ANYTHING!!

  34. Yes, you are right!! The nail color is called Cajun Shrimp from O.P.I. and it's one of my favs. haha! But I'm loving all things coral right now (in decor stuff) so I can't wait to see them styled. They're gonna look great!

  35. I think they look great! And my husband is frustrated because we have lived here five years and I have repainted the living room every year. We girls just do what we do b/c we want to. ;) Andrea @ townandprairie

  36. I really like them! Kind of depends on the rest of the room though, but I think it will be great!

  39. I checked the comments to see if anyone else had said anything about using the sample paints. The woman who helped me last time I went in warned me against using them as an actual paint due to low durability, adhesion, and likely fading. Hopefully it holds up!
