And Then:

What makes me cringe when I look back:

Though I love color, when I look back on my old house, there was too much color going on to be combined with so much stuff! My current home is so much more edited now than the previous one (thank goodness!). And the fact that my formal living room and dining room were all one space didn’t help. All the accessories and elements in the living area, just added to the cramped feel of the dining space. I know a lot of people like open plans, but I am a big fan of walls, especially after living in a home that had very few of them!

What I love most about my house now:

I love that my home is still full of color, but color as an accent not so much “in your face” color. I love that my walls are a neutral backdrop so that you can really see and appreciate the more subtle mixes of color in the fabrics and furnishings.

The biggest influence on my evolving style has been:

The biggest influence on my style has been my busy lifestyle. The busier my life gets, the more clutter-free and neutral my home gets. I will never be free of color, it really is who I am. But creating a respite from the busy world with smaller doses of color for energy and fun but with a relaxing background, are much more appealing to me now. My home is my sanctuary and so it needs to be a place that nurtures me and my family, not one that assaults us. J

Thanks to Tobi for playing along!  If you missed the first installment of the "Now. . . And Then", you can read it here.

  2. Wow. Such a big difference! I love the "now" space because it is so open, airy, but still has many elements that make it very put together without being cramped.

  7. I agree with the idea of editing. I am learning to swap accessories around every so often so I can fully enjoy all the items that I have collected over the years and ones that make me happy but not ALL at the same time! The best thing about this is one can "shop" at home to make minor changes to decor.

  10. Wow that is a huge difference. I think Tobi does an amazing job with color and it appears over the years she has become much more sophisiticated and edited. Her home is so cheerful and yet it has such a classic feel. Emily, these post are really fun to see the now and then's!! Kathysue

  11. Toby's 'now' is calming -- I can see that she has put into practice what she needs to have in her home. I need to take her lesson in the editing department...

  13. Loving this series. The first two features were both fun to read and full of inspiration. One of the best things about design blogs is seeing other "real" people creating wonderful interiors with realistic budgets and spaces. Though that Emily of Rambling Renovators has a bit of an edge on the rest with her "handy" architect husband. The last DIY project my husband attempted put him in the ER with a broken foot!
