In the White Room With Black Curtains. . .

(Don't you just love when your blog post topic matches up perfectly with song lyrics?!)

While I'm often using curtains to lighten and brighten spaces, lately I'm really drawn to the drama black curtain panels can add to a space.  To pull off this look, I think it really comes down to contrast.  I love the crispness of these "white rooms with black curtains":

This is an interesting look of mixing panels.  Not sure I'm completely sold.  What do you think?

And, if the idea of black curtains freaks you out a little but you still want to add some contrast, this is one of my favorite tricks.  (We recently did something similar in my online client Camille's living room).

How do you feel about black curtains?  Glam or too goth?

  1. I have never thought of adding black curtains for my own home but this post definitely got me thinking. I don't mind having black striped curtains though.

  2. Totally glam! I love these images - I usually avoid too much black in a room but it looks so great when mixed with tons of other neutrals! thank you for sharing!

  7. I would have never thought of having black curtains- when you say it, it sounds totally goth. But the pictures prove that they're just the opposite- totally glam! I love the mix with the black and white too.

  8. I like layering curtains to warm up a space and give more visual appeal and add color..I've done this in personal spaces as I have liked the look but it was not planned. I like black trim on white drapes or black drapes alone..not sure about b/w drapes together.

  9. It's a big NAY for me on the two sets of panels, black and white. However, I love the white TRIMMED in a wide piece of black. Yum.

  10. I've always thought black to be a rich color. I got married in 95 and had black curtains. Leftover material from the bridesmaid dresses. LOL

  11. Not sure if I like all black. I did like the white ones trimmed black.

  12. I think they work beautifully in the second image. I like them when there are several values represented in the space. Not really sold on the complete contrast of black curtains in an all white space. Definitely something to think about!

  13. I think they work great in certain rooms. Men seem to like them a lot and its a way to add black to a room without going too over board. its looks really crisp. Thanks for the post.

  15. Oh yes, black curtains are a must!! I'm totally in love with the black on black flocked damask curtains I have in my living room. Definitely adds the drama!

  16. I love the second picture with the beige and black. It is a nice neutral and a grounding for the room. On others, it is a little stark but that may be me. I may find that if I saw it in person I may love it.

  17. I have to say that I only love them when there is a ton of natural light flooding in like in that last photo. Beautiful.

  19. Emily, I love the way my curtains came out and everyone who comes over comments on them. Thank you so much for the suggestion. Taking a break from your project to get my kitchen painted. If you could see my kitchen, you would know why!!! But I promise I will finish!

  21. I like the contrasting trim, but not sure I could live with the dark panels. Seems like they'd show dust?!

    and congrats abby!

  22. Hmmmm. I'd never considered black curtains before. That's definitely something to think about.

At first blush, I'd say they're too stark for me. I really like the look of the charcoal panels in the mixed panel room, although the mix isn't for me at all. But those gray panels? Lovely & sophisticated. I'd love them in all of the rooms that had the black, definitely.

  23. I hadn't considered black curtains but I really like it contrasting with the white, especially in the rooms with a lot of neutrals. It's a very natural, yet sophisticated, combination. I didn't like the mixed black and white curtains but I do like the rest of the room!
