When I designed this client's living room, I opted for two sleek floor lamps to give the room a clean, modern feel. I also knew that two full-size end tables would've been out of balance with the settee that we used.
I'm actually drawn more and more to the look of two matching floor lamps flanking a sofa. When a sofa table or coffee table is already in place, end tables often just end up eating up needed space. Floor lamps can anchor the sofa and provide some nice symmetry at the same time. Here are some great examples of how well a pair of floor lamps can work:

I love the look, especially in a sitting/living room with a more formal feel. But for us (family of five with three young children) end tables are a must for functionality.

ReplyDeleteI am with you---I think when used thoughtfully floor lamps can add a great sense of drama and atmosphere. They are sort of like trees in your living room.
Love it - it looks cleaner and less cluttered too.

Lovely images! I love the idea of floor lamps. I have several in my house. If you can sacrifice a side table, I think they make a room more seamless and add height to a space.

ReplyDeleteI really love this look. Sometimes with end and/or side tables more is just more. We have a large sofa and two floor lamps would be perfect. I'll keep this in mind in the next few months when redesigning the room.
ReplyDeleteI love symmetry and this is a wonderful way to balance a room out! Many miss matched tables or chairs stand out more in front of a symmetric background, Lamps work often in the background, unless the are stealing the show, like some in your pictures! I love them!

I love formal balance and I think this is a great choice if 1) you sit on your sofa and read; it provides the perfect lighting and 2) if you have a small space that would be filled up with end tables.
ReplyDeleteI JUST started noticing this trend. I spotted the first and last images yesterday on Decorpad I believe and thought 'hmmmm. . . love it or hate it?'. I couldn't decide. Now I think I am loving this idea. It breaks away from the typical rule of always needing side tables flanking a sofa, and I kind of like having the option to do something out of the norm!

ReplyDeleteI think it's a great look. But I may miss the side table? I have one floor lamp in my living room with a lucite table in front of it... so I still get the use of a table without blocking the view of the lamp.
ReplyDeleteI have a floor lamp that I haven't used as planned because of the cord. The TradHome pic is a good comparison. My sofa floats in the room and the cord goes straight across the walkway. What do you do when the floor lamps aren't near the wall?

I love the look but I must say it's always a hard sell with clients. It's a brave client who agrees to ditch the side tables in lieu of lamps. Strange though because it's such a great look.

Totally agree, Emily! As long as there's a spot to set a drink nearby, I love the uncluttered look of a floor lamp. So many to choose from these days, too. Not like 15 years ago!

Am in the process (when am I not in the process?) of tweaking my living room and dining room, and have been stuck for weeks over dining room color and arrangement of chairs/end tables at the end of the living room that gives onto the dining room: Too crowded with two arm chairs and two end tables, fretting over the lone chair floating without an end table and no anchor. To have opened this page just as I was on the point of doing something really reckless and expensive was something of a minor miracle. Such clarity! Designer's block resolved. Thank you!
