Dressing Up a Dresser: The Details

After several weeks of pulling together outfits from a heap of clothes on her floor, my four-year-old is excited that I finally finished her dresser.  I shopped my dad's storage building while we were visiting at Christmas and found this:

I couldn't be happier with how it turned out:

Last month, I posted about Sara's makeover of a similar piece and had planned to follow her instructions and use primer and oil-based paint.  However, when I went to Lowe's to pick up my supplies, the lady there informed me that Lowe's no longer carries oil-based paint and suggested I use a primer and paint all-in-one.  I ended going with Valpar's "City Storm".

I knew I wanted a really glossy finish and since it only came in semi-gloss, I decided to also try Valspar's clear gloss spray paint as a top coat.  The dresser does have a glossy sheen, but I'm not sure the spray paint made that much of a difference over the semi-gloss paint.

I'm curious about some of these other clear finishes and may try to use them on other projects. . .

I started the makeover by giving it a good cleaning--my least favorite, but most necessary, part of the process. I just sprayed it down with Windex and wiped every corner and detail.

My parents lucked out and just happened to be visiting the weekend that I decided to paint.  It was a group endeavor.  My dad and I painted while my mom watched the kids.  It also helped the process go much quicker with my dad brushing the details and me going behind him with a roller.

Any project that requires new hardware can quickly become pricey, if you need multiple knobs and pulls.  I decided to shop the clearance hardware at Lowe's and found these for $2.89 and $1.79 each.

I think hardware can really make or break a piece.  Pairing this curvy piece with straighter, more modern pulls gives it a completely different feel.

We finished up by lining the drawers with scrapbook paper:

I'm doing a little more tweaking to her room (because that's what I do--I tweak things that are already finished instead of tackling rooms that haven't been touched!).  I'll be sharing some updates with you in the coming weeks. . .

  3. A cost saving benefit to lowes...the post office has 10% coupons and if you find the same item for less say at amazon you just show the cashier the image on your smart phone and they will give you the item for that price plus an additional 10% off from the coupon. I saved $100s of dollars purchasing for my new biz. It is helpful with small things they add up quickly. The dresser looks great!

  37. The dresser turned out great. I have those exact pulls in my kitchen. I was short one and went back to Lowes to get another and they were on clearance for 90 cents and all gone. I don't know if I was more upset about the big drop in price or that they were all gone.

  38. Looks amazing Emily! Don't you just love handy-man dads?! I couldn't do a project without my dad {but shh don't tell my husband ha!} :)

  43. @Ingrid I didn't modge podge or use any kind of adhesive for the scrapbook paper. We just layed it in there and it's been fine so far.

  44. Emily- beautiful! did you sand the piece at all before priming? I have a french provincial tall boy I am hoping to get to in the near future but I don't know if I should prime right over the paint or sand first.

  45. Gorgeous makeover and love the colour and hardware you chose. ;-)

  46. Really beautiful. I laughed out loud when you talked about how you 'tweak things'. I am forever staring at finished-looking things (to anyone else) and tweaking them when paint is chipping in another room. Glad to have found your blog!

    ReplyDelete
  47. @Claire I didn't do any sanding. The paint and primer mix went on really smoothly--no problems.

  48. That looks SO pretty Emily! The new hardware looks amazing on it. Awesome job!

  50. So when do you want to come paint some things around my house? Better yet, I'll bring them to you- looks like you have a better space for painting :) The sidewalk in front of my apartment really isnt the best.

Anyway, besides the point. The point, I LOVE this dresser and your daughter is so lucky!

  51. Love it, you did a great job and I love that it was a family effort!

  52. The dresser looks great! Love the colour you chose. I have a couple of dressers that I am wanting to paint - sadly I have to wait for the Spring as I do not have a garage and it's rather snowy outside :) I'm curious to know if you spray painted the majority of the dresser then just did touch ups with the brush and roller? Or did you paint the whole thing with a brush?

  54. Love it! I've used the spray on high gloss over semi-gloss too and agree it really doesn't give you a true lacquer-like/high sheen finish...but I think it still looks fantastic. And you slay me with the lined drawers...how I love lined drawers!

  55. Looks awesome! Can't wait to see the other "tweaks" to the room!!
