My Kids' Bathroom: Starting with Stripes

Don't you love when you find the item that you know is going to give you the push to get a room started (or finished)?  For months (okay, two years), the bathroom shared by my kids has been hanging in limbo.  When I saw this new shower curtain from West Elm, I knew just where it was going.

Stripe Shower Curtain

I think the horizontal stripes are perfect for a (shared) kids' bathroom.  Fun, without being too juvenile.  So that it feels like "theirs," I'm planning on bringing in some kid-oriented artwork.

And, I'm taking down the towel bars and using several of these large hooks to hopefully remedy the never-ending heap of towels on the floor.  (Does anyone else have this problem?)

  2. Yes, I have the same problem with my husband. I installed hooks thinking it would make hanging his towel easier for him. (who knew it was so difficult?) But my plan didn't work. He still can't seem to do it.
His mama didn't raise him right!!

  4. I agree... it takes ONE special item to get the ball rolling- and this time of year is awesome because of all the NEW products and furnishings being released! I got 4 of my favorite store catalogs in the mail yesterday- one of them was for West Elm! Woohoo- it's like Christmas is continuing!

Can't wait to see where else you go with this smart and young space!

  5. Great shower curtain. I still have my daughter's artwork framed and hanging in our house and she is almost 25! I think I love it even more now. I gave up on towel bars years ago, have nothing but hooks now - yes it helped.

  6. I put a double towel bar up in the kids bathroom last year thinking that would help. It didn't. I'm also going to try switching to hooks!

  7. Cute shower curtain, it's a great shade of yellow too! I need to switch out to hooks, not for the kiddo, but for the hubby.

  9. Cute bathroom. I tried the hooks when we first moved in, and then had to take them down, put two long bars back up, and put the hooks back up behind the door for robes. there are still towels all over the floor. something is wrong with my children.

  16. Love the shower curtain. We have the same problem with towels in the kids bathroom. I've been thinking for awhile that our towel rods need to come down to be replaced by hooks. I can't wait to see photos of your finished bathroom.

  19. Great shower curtain. Planning to rip down our towel bar as well. We have a striped curtain as well that I love . . but it has a lot of pink in it. Oh boy. Won't last long with my little man getting bigger everyday.

  25. Yes! I too was thinking of that curtain in my kids' bathroom. Only bummer is the walls are a pear green so I'm wondering if that will be too much color. I'll really be anxious to see what you do.

  26. I'm also thinking about replacing the towel bar with towel hooks. I don't even have kids, it's just hubby who leaves the heaping piles ;)

  30. YES, except my daughter's towel never makes it back to the bathroom from the closet floor. I about to change their bath decor from little kids to big kids:)

  31. I love the shower curtain. I would have seen it if I hadn't immediately thrown out all of my catalogues that came in the mail Monday because I was so irritated that my stack of mail was 4" high. I'm glad I saw it here! You will LOVE the hooks. They are the best thing!

  33. What a fantastic shower curtain. I like the hook idea, we seem to have heaps of towels on the floor as well!

  34. Emily love, love the shower curtain. I have always told my clients to use hooks with kids towels. I have had them designate a certain color of hook and towel for each child and also I have had them put an initial above the hook to designate the childs name. One of my clients put a picture of each childs handprint and name in a frame above the hook. So many fun ways to do a childs bathroom. Bathrooms are my favorite rooms to design!!! Kathysue

  36. Love the shower curtain! I am a big fan a hooks. My kids have hooks in the bathrooms and in the laundry room. Laundry room to put backpacks and anything else.

  37. I just bought a similar Walmart black and white shower curtain for our 40's era black and yellow tiled bath. If only the yellow at West Elm had been available! Any, I know you'll love it because those horizontal stripes really do what folks say they will -- make the surrounding area look wider.

  38. Good choice! Can't wait to see the finished room!

  39. West Elm has such a bevy of beauties in their new catalog! I love that shower curtain! :)

  40. I love the shower curtain! Of course, I am into all things yellow these days, so I might be biased. I also removed towel bars from our bathroom and added a DIY towel rack with a bunch of hooks; it works perfectly because we have so many visitors in the summer and there is plenty of room for guest towels!

  41. I just received the hooks I ordered from PB for our boys' bathroom for the same purpose! I got the numbered hooks: http://www.potterybarn.com/products/type-numbers-hook/?pkey=e|hook|43|best|0|1|24||6&cm_src=PRODUCTSEARCH||NoFacet-_-NoFacet-_-NoMerchRules-_- . I love them!

  42. LOVE using the hooks for towels! There's no excuse for a towel on the ground with them! I'm not much on yellow but the curtain is great!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yes, the hooks are fabulous! My three teenagers share their bathroom and hooks solved the war over the towel bars AND the discards winding up on the floor. Look forward to seeing the finished product!

  44. If your pile of towels makes it back to the bathroom, you're doing better than we are. My kids just leave them in their rooms. ugh

can't wait to see what you pull together for that bathroom!

  45. Hi Emily! If I were to choose the right piece of iron hardware for my bathroom, I'd go for towel bars. With hooks, you can't fold the towel and minimize the length of what's hanging, and that can be messy.

I've had that problem many times, and the last one got me fed up and checking out hand forged iron hardware online right away. But it's really up to how you view their function. Also, you have to see which one suits the design of your bathroom better.

  48. I know this post is a million years old in blog years, but I have to put in my two cents regarding towel hooks. Does anyone notice that their towels smell moldy more often on hooks than on towel bars?

My husband always hangs his towel on a hook, while I hang mine on a bar. His towel always stinks more than mine, so I blamed the hook. Perhaps I am wrong? Maybe it is because he showers more frequently than I do?
