A "Pretty" Solution to the Ceiling Fan?

Okay, I'm back.  As entertaining as he was yesterday, my husband only gets to guest post once every ten years.  I have to tell you that he was more than thrilled with your comments (over 100 responses and a link from Tobi Fairley's blog.  Not bad for a debut post. . . ).  In fact, I think he's starting to get the big head.

Since we're on the subject of husbands, I thought I would share a possible solution for the on-going "ceiling fan vs. pretty chandelier in the bedroom" debate.  Although I've personally given up on a pretty light fixture in our master bedroom, there may still be hope for some of you.

I spotted this ceiling fan with a drum shade at Lowe's recently.  It was the only style they carried, but makes me think there may be more options in the near future.  The brand is Eastview and right now, it's special order only for $229.  (I wasn't able to find it on their website.)  I wonder how cool it would actually keep the room, but if you're like us, we mainly run the fan for white noise at night anyway.

What do you think?  Would this be a good compromise in your home?

  1. It's actually pretty cute. I would go for a different design, but the idea is great. Since the fixture is so small two may be best in a room.

    Great find!

  2. Emily, I totally believe function rules and when it is hot, I want a fan! Perhaps, since I am not wicked house proud, I can't really understand those women who hate ceiling fans. Fans serve a purpose, and when it's hot, they rock.
That drum shade fan looks like some designer but their creativity and brains to work. If the stores expand their selection, peace may finally rein in many, many homes.

  3. oooh, I wish I previewed my comment...reign in homes, not rein and put their minds not but...oh, well, haven't had my coffee yet

  4. I don't know why someone didn't think of this sooner! We would have to investigate the "output" of air, since that's what my mister requires, but I will keep my eyes peeled now! There's hope!

  5. brilliant idea but I need a few more style options. Thanks for sharing!
    abby @ a delightful design

  6. It doesn't seem like a bedroom-type fixture, but I would put it in my kitchen for sure. It gets so hot when baking, but a real fan would look overbearing. Maybe paint up the black though.

  7. Hmm-it is pretty. But something about that tiny fan inside the light is weird to me.

  8. Since I live in the South, I cannot live without a bedroom ceiling fan: stylish or not, I hate being HOT!

  9. Its OK but Im hoping they'll come out with other options as you said. Ive been wondering how long it will take these companies to get on the bandwagon when it comes to this topic.
Thanks for showing us there may be hope:)

  10. I think yes! Living in the South...ceiling fans are a must. I love a pretty light fixture in the bedroom, but I love to sleep well even more!

    Happy anniversary weekend emily!

  11. It is amazing there are not better options out there yet. Seems there is a market for them!

Suze over at Dwellers without Decorators had a great solution to add a drum shade to her ceiling fan. I blogged about it here with contact info on the guy who made them for her.

  12. if it pumped out the air i would be all for it! unfortunately we heavily rely on our fan during the HOT summer nights. I wish i could have a pretty chandelier though!

  13. Interesting, never seen such an item! I've learned to love a ceiling fan. As a transplant to the south from CA, they really are useful in the summer.

  14. Interesting design. However in Arizona, a ceiling fan with lots of air is a must. Hugs, Marty

  15. YES OH YES! I love it!

We have a ceiling fan in our living room AND dining room. They are very much needed in the summer, but not very nice looking. I'm going to explore this option!

  16. Oh wow! I've never seen that option before- what a great solution!

  17. Doood! I like it a lOt. The price isn't bad either.

  18. Definitely a step in the right direction!

  19. I like the way that is going! Maybe we should all join forces and design some good lookin' ceiling fans ;)

  20. Hmmmm not sure, unfortunately we have a fan in a master bedroom and I've been forbidden to remove it, ours is pretty enough for a ceiling fan and I think the reason I'm ok with it is because you sorta don't notice it, this one screams out I'm a ceiling fan trying not to be, but with that said, with some tweaking maybe one can eventually be made that is a compromise for the sexes!!

  21. Loved your husband's post yesterday, but I'll keep my comment on your post so his head won't explode. I saw that same drum shade fan the other day. Did you happen to see another ceiling fan nearby that has retractable clear fan blades? Very mind tricking because one minute it was a fan and the next it wasn't.

  23. Love this idea and I think it is a great alternative for someone. I am like you not too sure how much air it would move but it is a great improvement. Someone really put on their thinking cap on this one, genious!! Kathysue

  24. I am seriously amazed by this idea... Pretty much brilliant if you ask me. I am not in love with the choice of shade design, but if it had a prettier drum shade I would dieeeee.

    I really really like it.

  25. I like it; however, my HVAC youth educated (his dad was an HVAC guy) husband would have to examine it so closely that it probably wouldn't be worth it.

Also, I emailed your post from yesterday to my husband. He was cracking up because he is in the same boat as your husband. He did ask me about karate chopping the pillows. I don't bother right now because it wouldn't last very long.

  26. A simpler, cleaner version of would definitely have me sold! I hope there are more to come...

  27. It's a good idea. wonder if there are any other styles out there.

  28. Just read your hubby's post. Too cute! I would get rid of our fan in a nanosecond but hubby is attached. I don't think he would care what it looks like though so I could get away with something like that. Hmm...

  29. Lee Lighting in Charlotte has a few versions of this. I'm still not convinced, but if you have to compromise ...

  30. I don't remember whose blog mentioned the chandelier ceiling fan at Horchow, but I bookmarked it:

  31. Wow!!! That is so unique...I wish I could get rid of a few of our ceiling fans...but the husband HAS to have a fan. Sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thank you for posting this! We've been debating eliminating two fans in our house for something prettier and this MIGHT just be the compromise!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I lost that fight as well! Sigh! But I have to admit on those hot summer nights I do enjoy the fan. I think this would be a great compromise but like you I wonder how much air it would actually move around. Fan & lighting companies need to find a beautiful solution to this problem....

    ReplyDelete
  34. Absolutely, Emily. It's beautiful. I like that it appears compact, but would probably pack a wallop. Love the design!

  35. Genius!! What took so long? ;)Ceiling fans are an absolute must here in Southern California, whether you like them or not they are necessary. Glad to see someone is getting creative. I would totally use these in my home.

  36. I love an old fashion ceiling fan...reminds me of "casabanca"

  37. I can't say I've ever had a ceiling fan in my house (my parents put one in after I left for college I think...). I don't think my honey has either, so it's not a debate for us, but I struggle with this when clients ask for a cute one - especially on a budget! Of course, I live in the Northwest so the heat is only an issue a few weeks of the year, and we have table fans that we bring out. But we do have an ugly air purifier in our bedroom to help with Ryan's allergies - the white noise has grown on me though!

  38. so happy you posted this! I just discovered your blog a couple of weeks ago and I'm so happy I did! You just (inadvertantly) solved our problem! We needed a fan in the living, but I like pretty light fixtures and this design was PERFECT for my (ahem, "our") style! Thanks so much for posting! I ordered it today and I'll send you a pic of the final result! :)

  39. We bought this fan on 11-16.

My wife had seen it in the store, and wanted me to see it. I found the picture you had posted on here, and loved it instantly. We went to the store & ordered it. It was supposed to come in yesterday (6 days after ordered) It still isn't here (now 7 days). They "hope" it will come in tomorrow, otherwise it will be next Monday before it will come in, making it 13 days since we ordered it.

I typically NEVER shop at my local Lowes because of their terrible customer service. We always go to Home Depot, but just fell in love with this light/fan combo for our dining room.

I will update this post & let you know if/when we get our fan.

Thanks for having these pics online, as you can't find it online on their site anywhere. (just don't believe the "get it in 5 days" on the paperwork)

  40. As promised, we got our fan installed before our New Year's Party, and here's a pic. It works great, I just wish Lowe's wasn't so terrible to work with. It came in over a month after we ordered it.

  41. Fashion plus function! This is a brilliant idea, a perfect addition to my favorite light fixtures. Kudos to you for finding this. This is the first time I actually saw a fan and a fixture in one. Great post!

  42. I really love this fan. I've always had a nice ceiling fan in my bedroom, and I really think that it helps put me to sleep at night, but sometimes it can get so noisy. I wish that more companies made quiet fans for bedrooms.

  43. I saw this today, it is NOT small. Would love this for my dining room since it's alway too warm in there!

  44. I think that ceiling fan will fit beautifully in any room. I like how the drum shade creates relaxing lighting by diffusing the light from the bulb and making use of the patterns to give off a dramatic effect. I would love to have this kind of ceiling fan in my room!

  45. So funny! I was just showing my husband this same light/fan recently. Although, I think I prefer this one better:

Not too sure about the $400 price tag, though.
