As much as I love finding Christmas cards (especially the photo cards) in my mailbox, I have to admit the actual act of getting a family picture made, bribing everyone into picture-perfect good moods, choosing a picture where all of us look normal/happy/awake/festive, addressing the envelopes, getting to the post office to buy the stamps and getting them in the mail, stresses me out--a little. (After that run-on sentence, I just remembered why I didn't send many cards last year. . . )
With all of that said, I've resolved to do better about sending cards this Christmas. In fact, we already had a little family photo session over the weekend (more details on that to come), and I've even picked my Christmas card design:

I can only hope we'll look as happy and relaxed as the Manchesters. . . .
I love the simplicity of this design and the nostalgic font. The card is oversized and will require extra-postage, but hey, I'm going all out this year to make up for the last one, or two, years. I found this card via Shutterfly. I've ordered Christmas photo cards and birthday invitations from them in the past and have always been pleased with the quality (and speed, since I always seem to be last-minute with these kinds of things). I also think their photo calendars would be great Christmas gifts for my kids. . .
Since we're on the subject of Christmas cards, I thought it would be fun to look back at some of our family's cards from years past. I only started sending photo cards once we had kids.

Doesn't everybody think it's a hoot to dress their first baby as Santa? Here we are, clueless Mommy and Daddy reindeer with a two-month-old baby boy.

Well, that was fast. Here, I'm five months pregnant with baby #2 (we didn't know it was a girl yet. . .). And, yes, I did what no pregnant woman should do--chopped off my long hair above my chin and put weird blond highlights in it. It's true, hormones make you do weird things.
I couldn't find the actual card, but here's the picture we used:

Year of the card that wasn't meant to be. But, we had a new baby girl and I was determined to show her off to the world. Unfortunately, our last minute attempt at a photo session resulted in a husband that was apparently about to fall asleep, a very enthusiastic two-year-old, and some crazy choppy bangs on my behalf. Oh, and I apparently decided to "make" our cards myself that year. I can't remember for sure, but I'm thinking these never went in the mail.

This year, Mommy and Daddy decided to drop out of the annual Christmas picture. I actually love to see pictures of the whole family when I get other peoples' cards, but completely understand that it's sometimes just quicker and easier to photograph the kids when they're in happy moods.

No cards that year, but I had good excuses. I was 7 months pregnant with baby #3 and we had just moved into our new house (after three months in an apartment so gross it will never be blogged about. . .). I was tired, fat and just trying to keep my head above water. I never ordered cards, but here's a family picture I found from that year:

Baby #3's first Christmas! It's alot of work to get a family of five ready for pictures, but we did it and I think I even managed to get a few of these cards in the mail (some after Christmas, but nevertheless. . . ).

Thanks so much for sharing! You have a truly adorable family.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous family!! So fun to look back at the pictures. Keep taking them, you are making wondeful memories,Kathysue
ReplyDeleteI'll bet your cards will be perfect.
ReplyDeleteWe did a photo shoot over the weekend Emily and it wasn't until the end that I realized my son was wearing his slippers. UGH...
Oh how I can identify with this post!! You looked beautiful every year regardless of how you felt. It's such a blessing to see your family grow the way that it has. Will you be expecting baby #4 next year? Just kidding ;-)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful family. You simply can't make a "bad" card with all those precious little ones in the picture.
ReplyDeleteMandi.
My mom almost always sent out Christmas letters filling in our friends and family on what was going on with all of us kids and such. So, naturally I've started to do the same - including a pix. I love getting them from others, so why not send one out of your family to brighten someone's day? ;-)
ReplyDeleteBefore having children, I had my cards out a couple days after Thanksgiving...now, I think each year gets a little bit farther behind. I usually just enclose a family photo in a Christmas card (sometimes handmade, sometimes store bought - just depends how much time I have!)
ReplyDeleteI try to make it easier by printing return address stickers and address labels on my computer. I hate addressing envelopes!!
This is a super cute post idea - I may have to borrow it! What a pretty family!
ReplyDeleteEmily.... I love all of them - what a beautiful family :)
ReplyDeletexoxo Happy Holidays!
Love that you shared these. Beautiful family.
ReplyDeleteThe Manchesters only look happy and relaxed because they're at the ocean!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing these. You have a gorgeous family, although it seems that you, Andrea, and Adam should be those ages instead of your children!
I enjoy reading your blog. You are very gifted. Merry Christmas!
Great memories (& hairstyles). We always send photo Christmas cards but it's always just of the kids. It's just too complicated to pick a time when we can all go.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone Emily! You look great and I loved seeing these pictures! I did the Christmas picture cards one year with my oldest son because I was so excited about being a mom. Now with three, I can not get those little fellas to sit together and smile for nothing! Maybe I'll try again!
ReplyDeleteAll of your cards are fabulous. You all look wonderful and I am sure everyone loves receiving your cards. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteI adore receiving photo holiday cards! Its like getting a little present in the mail.:) We had our family pictures taken in early November and have are card already to go out. Love your family pictures!

I love the cards!
ReplyDeleteMy mom actually sends out the 'annual newsletter.' She prides herself on being the first of year, typically. The newletter is sent on Friday after Thanksgiving. She has been doing it for 35 years.
Luckily we stopped doing family pictures... now we do individual picturs and can submit our own :)
Can't wait to see what you have in store this year!
Beautiful photos!! We just got some family photos done yesterday for our first card with all of us on it (usually just my daughter).
ReplyDeleteGorgeous family, thanks for sharing :-)
Beautiful family. I have mine . . but they haven't come out of the box. The idea of jotting a note, addressing, stamping, etc. is stressing me out!
ReplyDeleteAh, this is SO super duper cute! Can't wait to see the 2010 card!
ReplyDeleteSo cute! Loved watching your family grow. We attach a pic of our little one in front of the tree every year. I think we are one of the few to send a real card!
ReplyDeleteAhh, it was fun to see your family through the years! I love how it can tell a story about where you were at that moment in time. Since having a child we've sent photo cards, and I love receiving them.
ReplyDeleteLove the photos. I can so relate. We bought a photography session at a fundraising dinner to finally get a professional photo of our family and then my daughter's braces that were supposed to come off were postponed a month and then she broke her leg and is donning a bright purple cast - photos are now scheduled to be taken in the spring. This year will be a snapshot of our family holding the Canadian flag as the Olympic torch goes running by - great idea except I was having a bad hair day!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see your 2010 family photo!
These are so cute! I love seeing the "history" haha. I can't wait to have a family and send Christmas cards!
ReplyDeletewhat a great post!!! that was so fun to see...can't wait to see your beautiful family this year!
ReplyDeleteSo cute, Emily!! This is the first year that I'm done w/our Christmas cards before Dec. 1 and I'm so excited. Plan to send them this out this w/e!
ReplyDeleteyour post makes me laugh because i totally have attempted the "family xmas photo" and failed and haven't sent them out because it was so bad. this year it's all photos of the kids.
ReplyDeleteOh getting Christmas cards in the mail is one of my favorite parts of the season! We have sent a family card ever since my son was born. I love looking back and how much we have all changed. Shutterfly is great. I used them last year and several other years. This year I went with Tiny Prints and they turned out really cute.
ReplyDeleteYou don't give yourself enough credit! First of all, you look beautiful in all of them. Second, it's no sin to get them in the mail after Christmas ... sometimes there's just not enough time in the day.
ReplyDeleteIn 2002, I had my first son on Dec. 19th, took his pictures the afternoon we came home from the hospital on the 21st, and mailed my combination cards/birth announcements out on Dec. 23rd. I was SO convinced I could do it that I nearly killed myself getting it done. Everyone thought I was NUTS. Looking back, I agree with them. ;)
You made me laugh out loud with this post! I am already stressing about taking my daughter's picture for the cards...fingers crossed for a good mood!
ReplyDeleteYour family is beautiful and I can't wait to see this years!
I absolutely love the self-critique narrative that goes along with your family pictures! I do the same thing! That is why *mommy* gets to pick the pictures and not daddy...(c: You have an adorable family and I can't wait to see the new picture...

It's so fun to look back and see how much things have changed, even just 5 or 6 years ago!
ReplyDeleteSo fun! You crack me up. And that little girl of yours — too cute for words!
ReplyDeleteAww so very sweet. What a beautiful family you have!
ReplyDeleteWe did cards last year but will wait till baby comes for next family photo op:)
We used to love Shutterfly and the thought of 50 free cards is cool. But, we've been using Send Out Cards for a year now and are actually MAKING money by sending cards through them and helping others send cards through them (and making money themselves).
ReplyDeleteSend Out Cards is fully customizable and allows you to use as many pictures as you want, send out personalized cards in your own handwriting and with your own signature right from your computer and you can send gifts this way, too!
I'm happy to give you and your readers a couple of free Send Out Cards to send out as an early holiday gift to you all.
Just go to www.sendoutcards.com/gradea to send out a card or two on me.
Happy Holidays!!!

This is cracking me up! You look gorgeous in every picture and your family is beautiful!! I really like the pic from 2008:)
ReplyDeleteI think you look great in every pic, I hated being pregnant though, so I can relate! Can't wait to see this years!
ReplyDeleteHow fun to see all the years! I love sending and receiving cards but so far this year, I haven't even started thinking about them!
ReplyDeleteWhat can I say that has not already been said! Your family is adorable and it appears that you can't take a bad picture!
ReplyDeleteSoooo cute Emily! I loved seeing these! No matter what you say, you're always beautiful!!

I loved this post, Em! I think this year I'll be totally lame and untraditional and send a few E-Cards... just too tired to make the effort! Next year, Baby Girl is definitely wearing a hair bow and we'll go "all out" (as "all out" as a broke family of 4 can!)
ReplyDeleteBut, a quick thought... Shutterfly does some beautiful, and pretty reasonably priced, Christmas cards - best part is they will even let you personalize them AND will mail them out for you! That's what I've done the past two years and it was great - they always have good deals and sales, too. Never have to set foot in a post office, or put pen to paper. All my addresses are saved in my shutterfly address book. Can't get much better than that!
I am laughing with you Emily b/c we dressed Connor up as a reindeer his first Christmas. Every year we seem to add another child too! Connor saw your Elf on the Shelf and wants to know what his name is. Ours is Charlie. Also, I am going to email finally about my house. I need some help!
