Changing Things Up

A few weeks ago, I found this fun canvas at HomeGoods and the colors worked perfectly in our family room.  (It also happens to sum up how I feel 99.9% of the time. . . )

While "some people" in my house might say I can't leave well enough alone, I prefer to call it a case of "creative tweaking."  Our bookcases are one of those areas where I keep making small changes, until it feels just right.  Here's a little progression of my changes. . . .

And, this is how it stands for now. . .

What area in your home are you constantly making changes to?

  1. Emily, I love the changes you've made and I think you learn a lot in the process of making tweaks here and there. For example, what color works best or how a different pattern feels, etc. Love your new find from Home Goods!

  2. I love the changes and have a hard time deciding which one I like the best - just like different flavours of ice cream. I tweak my sideboard in the same way.

  3. I seem to do most of my tweaking with paint! I repaint walls like people move furniture around! Love the bookcase, and my favorite was the addition of the black and white photos of the kids.

  4. I can totally identify with you on this one. I'm constantly changing things around my house and my husband doesn't get it. I will tell him it's "creative tweaking" :)

  5. I do the same thing with the bookshelf in my living room. We live in an apartment though so not so much space to store stuff to alternate and play with.

  6. I'm always changing things too. I think I just get tired of looking at the same things all the time. It's fun to shop the house.
I was wondering if the orchid is real. I could never keep one alive.

  7. I haven't done my bookcases in a while but now I'm inspired! It's usually a console table under my picture window, the coffee table in the family room, and the entry hall table. Love seeing your shelves evolve. :)

  8. Constantly! Looks great, love the colors of the canvas and how they bring out the color on the bookcase back. The kid's piano teacher was just giving me a hard time about how every time she comes for lessons the room is different, so you are not alone!

  9. I like the newest arrangement best! My mantle is the one spot I am constantly changing. There is just something about it that is never quite there. My brother came by this weekend and said: "this is just cluttered--so cluttered." Since then I have just been staring at it wondering what to do to it next.

  10. I feel like I am always making changes to almost everywhere in my home. I rearrange things, and it is a cheap way to redo a space :)

  11. NEVER! I tend to never make changes once an area is finished. That's why it's so important for me to wait and get what something I like. Once it's up, even if I don't like it, it will take me YEARS (like 10) to change it out!

  12. I have to say my living room is where I change things up the most...pillows, throws, rearranging pictures!

I love the way yours is styled right now...very nice!

  13. I'm the same way. My husband gets all ruffled up about it but I think he secretly loves me more for it. :) I love the changes. I couldn't decide which one I liked the most. They all look so good.

  16. Ha, I am the same way! No area in the house is safe, but frequent tweaks are made to the office bookshelves/my desk, our bookshelves, the bar cart, and the coffeetable. AKA all horizontal surfaces :)

  19. Love the new canvas!
I seem to always be painting something....and making new pillows for someplace, even though I just made or painted said item!

  20. Everything. Just everything. I find myself constantly saying "Oh well after this week this will be done" and it never is. Maybe next week??

  21. Ummmm .... everything? Yep, I do a lot of tweaking. I can't help myself! It's just fun to play around and come up with different combos ...

  22. Don't even get me started. I think I am an incurable re-arranger {if there is such a thing!}. Great print. Like the infusion of the warm colors.

  23. My husband would probably respond with what part of my house am I NOT always tweaking. I'd say my front hall console table. It's never "just right" for long

  27. Creative tweaking is my middle name! :) I can't seem to leave anything alone in my house for very long but I have to say bookshelves do tend to get the most tweaking. Yours looks fabulous - in all its variations! :)

  28. I think anyone with a creative bone in their body tweaks things. I am also notorious for switching up things on our 2 huge built-in bookshelves. There is just so much space that I am constantly trying to make sure it all works together.

  29. It was fun to see what you changed from one photo to the next, kind of like those "what's different" challenges in some kids' magazines. Isn't it fun when you find something that just works like that canvas. That's why I love those stores (HG, Marshalls, TJM)!

  31. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS POST! I had to write that in all caps b/c I am THAT excited! I have a single bookcase that is similar to yours, the three shelves with the doors on the bottom and I have STRUGGLED so much with decorating that shelf. Now I am using your pics as inspiration. Thank you!
