In My Shoes. . .

Wonder what my days are like?  Not necessarily glamorous, but never boring. You can read a play-by-play of one of my days last week over at Camila's "In Her Shoes" series.

High-Heeled Foot in the Door

And, speaking of shoes. . .  they seem to be an on-going battle around our house.  Lots of little shoes (accompanied by lots of little dirty socks in the fall and winter) take over, and it drives me crazy.  So, I've purchased one of these from IKEA, hoping it will solve all of our problems.

I especially like the wire baskets (that you buy separately).  They're big and only $2.50 each.  I think they would also be a great solution for kids rooms, laundry rooms, kitchens, etc., and would be fun spray painted in bright colors.

Do you have the same problem in your house?  If so, what's your best shoe solution?

  1. We do have that problem, and that is the solution I chose!! We call it the "shoe cabinet" (although it's not really a cabinet) but ALL the shoes belong there unless they are on your feet :) It has worked wonderfully for me & my two little boys, hope it works for you, too!

  2. Hi Emily! just wanted to say hello and let you know that I really love reading your blog. I'm a small business owner (caterer) turned stay at home mom of 2 kids (2 and 7 months), and your authenticity and great design ideas are so refreshing. Thanks so much for sharing!

  5. Well, funny you should ask. I struggle with the shoes & socks problem myself. And the husband is the biggest offender. Is it too late to train him?

  8. We keep a big basket by the main door we use and keep the shoes we grab most often in there. It isn't the most organized, but at least it keeps them from piling up on the floor by the door.

  10. I loved reading about your day!! So down to earth! :)

I have 3 of these ikea thingies...they are so awesome. I love how you can get the different style of bins that all work with it too. Can really customize it to your needs.

  11. We had this problem too. My solution was to hang one of those shoe pouch thingys in the closet in our mud room. If you don't have enough shoes to keep it full it is also great for collecting little gloves, mail, keys/sunglasses, etc.

  12. BINGO! That basket is brilliant. My son's 10 & 15 can't seem to keep anything in a drawer or off the floor. At least with a basket I can see what's missing!

  13. I use this baby to store our shoes, http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80156120 Keeps everything hidden away :)

  14. I use those same baskets in my office closet, love them! Great idea to use them for shoes too. We currently have one basket in our hall closet that's becoming VERY full with shoes. Perhaps it's time to think bigger and these really are great...and cheap.

I'm a new reader and love your blog! Thanks Emily!

  15. Shoes everywhere! Ahhhhh!! I've started having my boys take their shoes off before they come in the house - because then they can't toss their shoes around the kitchen / living room / etc. We have a very similar wire basket in the garage, right outside the mudroom. It has helped tremendously!

  16. I have a plastic Walmart shelving unit in our hall closet and each member has a basket that all their shoes go on. I also keep a laundry basket in the laundry room which is right by that hall closet for the socks to be deposited into! The baskets have worked well for the shoes and they are hidden so we don't have to look at them. I also have a basket with beach towels an another with all our bathing suits so they are easy to get to.

  17. Hi Emily! I've been on a brief blogging hiatus (due to some prolonged morning sickness with my 2nd baby), and have missed all of your fantastic decorating tips! I'll definitely look forward to catching up as I have a few design projects coming up myself - including my daughter's big girl room and a new nursery design!

  18. I so enjoyed the post about your day! Sounds familiar! Will you keep some of your shoes in the closet? I'm just thinking I have too many shoes for our mudroom. Then again I guess I only wear 2 or 3 pairs on a regular basis. I should at least do that with the kids' shoes. My preschooler comes home with a pound of sand in each shoe every day.

  19. When my kids were younger, it seemed like we were forever losing socks in the laundry. My solution was to use a lingerie mesh bag to put all the kids socks in. That way when they came out of the dryer, all the socks were together and easy to sort. We also suffer from the shoes-everywhere-but-in-the-closet syndrome. I like all the ideas shared here! Nice blog, by the way!
