Dutch Boy Paints: My Take

I was thrilled when Dutch Boy Paints emailed me a couple of months ago and offered to send me four gallons of paint to try and review on my blog. (This blogging gig is turning out to be a pretty good deal.) I was hoping it would kick my projects-in-waiting into high gear, but most of them are still in slo-mo speed.

After weeks of procrastination, I decided to start by painting my dining room "Flatland"--a warm mocha.  (My mom described it as a brown paper bag, but I think that's a good thing.)

I love the way it turned out:

Since Dutch Boy asked me to give a review of the paint itself, I have to be honest.  I loved it.  First, let's talk about the paint can.  It's not a can at all, which makes alot of sense.  It's a plastic container with a screw-on lid, a handle and a spout for easy pouring.  Why doesn't every paint company do this?

I did use end up using two coats of paint, which is typical when using a darker color.  However, I was surprised at how little paint I actually had to use on my roller to get good coverage.  The second coat went on extremely smoothly and dried quickly.

The paint went on even easier when my dad took over :)

I might also mention that there was almost no paint odor, which was great since I had three little ones running around watching me work.

So, my final verdict on Dutch Boy Paint: two thumbs up!  Thanks to Dutch Boy for this opportunity.  I look forward to sharing more of my projects using their paint in the near future.

I'll leave you with a couple more glimpses of my dining room makeover in-progress:

  21. I have more of a question than a comment...(thought i love the first color you've tried from Dutch Boy!) I just found your blog, but i'm curious. ever painted over wallpaper? ours is the original with GRAPES (yipe!) on sheetrock when the house was built in 1993, with great seams, no lifting, etc, so we don't want to tear it down to have tons of spackle work. any tips?

  29. Wow, this is the third glowing review of Dutch Boy paint. Maybe I'll give it another chance. However, word of warning, don't use the ceiling paint. While it's a lovely shade of white, even after 2 appropriately generous coats of white, it was blotchy and patchy, and Mom and I are pretty experienced painters. Just so y'all know.

Anyhow, thanks for the review. Dutch Boy certainly has the benefit of being easily accessable, so maybe I'll try it again.
