How To Find the Best Deals on Craigslist

If you've read my blog for any length of time, you know of my obsession with Craigslist and that almost 90 percent of our furniture has been found there. If you live in or near a metro area, I don't think you can beat the deals (or unique pieces) that you can find on this site.

I have heard from several of you, however, that tell me you never have any luck. Although I don't have any magic formula, I will share my best advice for finding--and getting--great deals on Craigslist:

1.  Search the site often.  If you're looking for a specific item (or even if you're just browsing), look several times a day--or more.  New listings are added all the time, and if there's something really great, you want to be the first to know about it.  Sometimes I type in keywords, but usually, I just keep refreshing the page to scour new listings.

This Pottery Barn wool rug was used in a builder's model home for a few short months. I found it on Craigslist for just $100.

2.  Don't use keywords that are too specific in your search.  If you are looking for a tufted chair, for example, I would just search by "chair."  In many cases, sellers may not know the correct term for tufting, upholstered, etc.  I can't tell you how many times I see "cloth chairs" listed. . .  If your search terms are more broad, you'll come up with more results and hopefully find a gem that other buyers have missed.

This pair of slipper chairs were literally like new and had been sitting in the seller's unused foyer.  I was lucky enough to find them for $100 each.

3.  Be decisive, and act fast.  Craigslist is not the place to spend  two weeks deciding if the $25 coffee table you found is the perfect fit for your living room.  Good items will go fast.  So, if you find it, like it and feel like it's a fair price, go for it and don't look back.

I found this oversized abstract painting for $125 and bought it immediately.

4.  Always offer less than the asking price.  I always email with a lower offer (still within reason) or to ask if they're willing to negotiate.  Why not?  Nine times out of ten, I get a better deal.  Craigslist is made for negotiation.  I just try to keep my offers fair so that the seller will know I'm a serious buyer and respond.

I had no real place for this chair when I found it, but it was a great deal from a model home listing and I loved the lines.

5.  If you can't afford it, email the seller with your budget.  I know I just said to email the seller with a reasonable offer.  That being said, if you're looking at a bigger ticket item and can't necessarily pay what they're asking, I will sometimes email the seller and tell them what I can pay, in case the item doesn't sell.

This is the very way I got our family room sofa.  The seller had a Rowe sofa that had been used for less than six months and was then wrapped in plastic and stored when they moved.  She was asking $700.  I emailed her and told her I only had a budget of $300.  She politely declined.  I understood.  She emailed me a month later and told me she would take $500.  I politely declined.  Fast forward another month later--and sofa still sitting wrapped in storage--she emailed me again and told me she would take $300.  Done deal!

6.  Imagine the possibilities!  I always try to look closely at the (very often terrible) photographs on Craigslist to find the potential of a piece of furniture.  Think about what changes you can make with paint, fabric, etc.  I look for the small details that may make a piece really shine after a little makeover.  Remember my bookcases?  I got them for just $20 each, but this is what they looked like online, and then after some TLC:

Want to see more of my bookcase makeover?  I'm guest posting today over at Cottage and Vine with the details.

Good luck with your searches and happy shopping!  Would love to see what you find.

  11. Of course Im a big fan of daList. Here is a little story. I was looking for a dining table and lucked up on a great one. I called a friend to tell them to go on daList to view it. After about a whole day of going back and forth and them not being able to find it, my last question was "Spell dining" Of course, I didnt want to insult them, but as suspected they spelled it "diNNing."

    Ive seen Bernhardt as "Barnheart"...seriously.

    Point is...Try all variations.

  21. Really great advice on Craigslist shopping!! And I love your finds. Too funny - we have a set of bookshelves that look almost exactly like yours - just not rehabbed yet. We got them for $25 at an estate sale (another favorite shopping source of mine.)
Another thing that I think is great to note is that this is the most environmentally responsible way to shop. Not only can you find some unique treasures, but you are potentially keeping some unwanted items our of landfills.
    Wonderful post!

  24. I don't live in a metro area, but one problem I encounter frequently is the pricing of items for my local craigslist. I feel the items are very out of date, and not in a good antique/vintage kind of way, yet people list these items at crazy price points. I guess I could always make an offer at the price I feel it's worth, but my price point is usually way less than the asking price.

  25. Emily,

I mean absolutely no disrespect at all and I pray this doesn't come across that way! I love you designs and wished I lived near you to make you come to my house! My question for you is what do you do to treat the items that come into your home? I worry to death about bed bugs especially since Beth at Stories from A2Z went through it. I am freaked out about staying in any hotel now since it is all over the news about bed bugs infesting New York City! I am so worried about Craig's List purchases because I am terrified of bringing unwanted critters into my home! Do you do anything to the items you buy before you bring them in?

  28. Thank you so much for this post! I always see other bloggers (you included) with these great finds on Craigslist but I was wondering why I never see anything as great in my city. With these tips, I can't wait to start watching Craiglist a little closer and see what I can find!

  29. Wow, you are one of the lucky ones! I have found some things but nothing like what you have found. Thanks for the tips. I noticed you have gotten lots of things from model homes....that is a great key word search!

  30. Great tips. I agree, keeping your search vague is best. It's amazing the way folks will describe items so off the mark!

  32. good tips. Linds from Everything LEB is seriously the queen of CG. She has some program that looks at the image. I might be making that up, but she can find ANYTHING in 10 minutes. I owe her 1/2 my design fee on my last two projects

  33. Fabulous advice. I often dismiss Craigslist as being too cumbersome to search through, but I can see by your pics that persistence pays off! May have to give it another try. :)

  42. I love craigslist and ebay - I think the two most important things you said that I absolutely agree with are check often and always offer/ask if they will sell for less - good post!

  43. Great post Emily! Thanks for the info! I love craigslist! I just sold a projector to a couple of little girls who wanted to buy it to play school. They were so excited when they got to my house! They were so cute :) and I remember those days so well...

  44. Wow Emily! Consider holding a seminar in your city on how to shop CL. The only problem then is that you will have viable competitors for the goodies ;-) Great post!

  45. Thanks for sharing all of your great tips! I recently moved to Los Angeles and can be overwhelmed with the vast number of posts to sort through. I recently downloaded a Craiglist notification application on my Droid smartphone. You can save your searches and then they send you a notification when something matches it. I was a bit more specific since I didn't want notifications every second. I saved "upholstered headboard" and "upholstered bed" and would then receive notifications within minutes of a new posting that matched my keywords. I always skip over the posts by dealers as it's hard to get a good deal with them!

  50. Really great post! Craigslist can be a frustrating place, and I have to admit I've had some bad experiences there myself. I love the items you've found however, and it inspires me to start treasure hunting and not just selling:)
I've just signed up for a great new startup called Statricks, which seems very useful when you're using online marketplaces to trade used goods. This site gives you price trends and fair market values for almost all used goods so you’ll know what the going price is for an item. I plan to use it in negotiations if people are not willing to pay a fair price for my items (or try to overcharge me). I would recommend everybody to sign up, start flipping items and make some profit!
