Easy (and Inexpensive) DIY Fabric Roller Shade

I loved the above image from Domino when I originally saw it and must have subconsciously had it in my head when I bought a yard of this fabric in the $4.99 remnant bin:

I decided to try my hand at a DIY fabric shade to add a little drama to our guest bathroom makeover.  (When I say "diy," I'm almost embarassed.  All of my projects are so simple, I'm pretty sure a monkey could do them. . . .  )

So, here's what I used: a $5 roller shade from Wal-Mart, fabric & fabric glue.

These shades were super easy to size--just measure and tear:

You see who actually ends up doing the bulk of "my" projects. . . We just left a couple of inches of fabric on all sides so that we could fold over a seam.  We used the glue sparingly and only around the edges.

  8. looks great (the whole bathroom does) and that's motivation for me to do that to our roller shades. how much fabric did you buy for that size shade? that's where i don't know what to do, and just do nothing.

  10. Black and white stripes are one of my favorite choices. Great choice for your room. I saw the striped fabrics at Ikea on my last visit and was surprised that the quality was pretty good too.

  22. I love this idea and have thought of trying it in our master bedroom. Do the shades function after you glue on the fabric? I am always worried that they won't go up and down due to the extra fabric. Looks awesome, Emily!

  25. Hi, Emily! This looks great! Maybe even I could do this! I stayed up really late the other night looking at old posts of yours. I had to finally make myself go to bed but I really liked it! I took both kids to Big Lots the next day and bought 2 nice pillows for the couch (I thought you would be impressed by the color and texture it added to the couch and loveseat that we really want to replace someday.) and a really neat dish to put our stuff in on the counter (after reading one of your posts about that). Keep it up! Who would have thought 15 years ago?? You are great!

  30. Very cute, puts a nice final touch in there, I'm guilty of husband-helping (as I call it) too :). I admire "crafty" people, I'm desperatly debating making a bedskirt for our 4-poster bed b/c I can't find one long enough, this is NOT my territory and I'm panicking! Any advice?? *Amy

  33. The roller blind mechanism is good, so don’t want to replace the whole thing, just the fabric of the blind, but can't seem to find anywhere selling the fabric alone.

  34. I've been thinking these would be a great idea for matchbox living room. I have two huge windows and all the light comes right through making my tv viewing experience impossible-- I now have my tv in front of windows to avoid this problem but dislike the living room feel. Glad I saw this post now I just have to find some roller blinds and fabric to compliment the living room feel I'm trying to create. Ah, it never ends.

  42. Hi! sorry if this is was already answered above, but I am wondering if the blind is still functional. I like the light coming in the bathroom, but need to have something that rolls down for privacy.

    1. I think they can be functional if you use the right (light) weight fabric. Ours wasn't but it was mainly just to get the house ready to sell and worked fine for that.

  43. Love this! Did you find that the fabri-tac glue held up well? I used it to add pom-pom trim to a vinyl shade for my daughter's room and it was fine at first but then the trim came unglued. I'm now working on a different project and wanting to add ribbon to a vinyl shade. Wondering if I should glue? Sew? Thanks!

    1. The glue worked fine for us--but we never lowered the shade. If it was something you were going to use on a daily basis, maybe you would want to sew it.... ?

    2. Thanks so much for your reply! I went ahead and used the Fabri-Tac. Hopefully it holds up and if not I'l just have an excuse for another project.
